Back to the Plex argument again, I dont want nor approve of running a PC to cater for streaming.
I much prefer dropping anyfile type into a flat fle structure like a cheap NAS and have something ( Boxee _) just stream direct.
Ive tried Plex so many times, and unless its running on something half decent its painfull.
that being said running Plex on my main PC is a nice experience Haswell I5 with 32gig Ram, but i just dont want that running 24/7. at least with boxee you point it and shoot, and works flawlessly, hence why ive got 3 :/

As XBMC isn't available on a non JB'd AppleTV, I could not go that route
I agree running Plex 24/7 isn't great, nor is having to run a script and redirect DNS to the machine running the script. If I had a NAS that could run Plex and the script then I'd likely run it there, as it would be on 24/7.
I don't think I have Plex set up to transcode, just stream, so, in theory, it shouldn't be slowing down the iMac it's running on, then again, if I'm watching a movie, I'm not using my iMac, so I don't know for sure

I run my iMac 24/7, have done for years, Plex works perfect.
I can stream from Plex to my Roku box and run a movie directly on the iMac in the other room with no issues.
