No not really.
Can you not recall the prices of the first Plasmas say 10 years ago, it wouldn't be unusual for a basic 720p to be £4'000.
So £800 for a 55" all singing and dancing TV is good value.
It's a big industries now, and to be honest I wouldn't pay anymore than £800.

IMO, I'd just get the best panny plasma money can buy 500hz etc and you won't go wrong with picture quality and reliability.
IMO the 3d is pointless although it's good to watch the films on it but the apperatious you have to shove on your head to do it, is not something I like doing so just pub talk gimmick IMO.
I think I'll wait for a panny OLED tvs to come out before I even think of purchasing a new one, although there's nothing wrong with the panny plasma I have ATM.

I know...our old CRT cost over £1000.
Our current Panny cost much much less (although its original retail price was higher).
Unfortunately I needed to spend £500+ on A/V amp and speakers to match the audio quality of the old Philips CRT which had built in 5.1

...oh and I have an antique Hitachi plasma upstairs that originally cost £4000
Dire picture quality (6bit colour with awful dithering) but half decent sound, due to decent speakers and a subwoofer. It weighs as much as a CRT and the floor stand needs two people to lift it (without the TV mounted on it
)

The only thing I'd personally sought after is full hdmi-Cec compatibility with the tv that it's being used with. Where the tv will turn it on and off as well as auto connect and disable the tv speakers. Its hit and miss on some tvs.
For example my Onkyo and Panny work fine - I never need to touch the Onkyo remote. Same with a Sony amp I tried. However both amps on a LG plasma wouldn't work properly. It seems only LG home cinema systems are the only amps that'll work right.
Not an issue if you don't mind fiddling with multiple Remotes every time you turn on the TV. Unless you have a decent programmable remote.
