Pinks are not needed at 290bhp. In his article he states standard injectors are 380cc but they are infact 440's are they not which can cope with circa 320bhp at standard pressure. Add a fpr into the mix and they'll cope with quite a bit more.
As for flirting with 400, yea the standard box will cope but for how long is questionable. I'd be more concerned about the longevity of the standard engine at that power.

They would have been in the money if they said "you could run 300 with headroom." That would have been a nice step up from the then 220 odd. What actually destroys the WRX engine at that power is it the torque forcing the pistons (or crank etc) down too forcibly? the explosion pressure too big for the rings/pistons to handle? or heat build up thinning oil through increased friction due to parts moving faster. If the latter would an oil cooler, colder plugs uprated thermostat, water pump and water wetter etc etc increase tolerances?
