If you go back 10 years no one really used it as we were all reasonably mature and sensible and reasonabally wealthy to be able to spend 20/30 k on a car before modifying and mobile phones were just starting to be used a lot more and fb was none existence

We had proper grammar and people boasted of how they spent and others were inspired and we were all in a similar bracket

12 years later we have been invaded by the Barry boy people of a different generation and spending powers who want to modify and have different tastes and styles and want 350bhp from a dump valve and dodgy stickers amd don't like to be told by the older generation that it's not cool to drive at 50 on a 30 zone and your fake roof scoop and silly spolier and body kit looks daft
We have then regular stories of scams and second hand parts deals going wrong which gets people's backs up

We then have the hard core wind up merchants who love them or hate them do keep the fourm alive and active and are the saviours of non scooby chat with their wit and humour Unfortunely some don't apreciate that they are wind up merchants and get reeled in

He godfather ps Lewis was the top of the tree for years but as he is virtually retired he has some great apprentices now his work

Lots of people actually come on here for a wind up / down for the entertainment as let's face it

There is not much new things to talk about on subarus as its all been done / discovered / bought or ended in disaster

Scoobynet will survive but if you don't like someone / something said its best to ignore as I'm sure they wouldn't be so many differences if we were all face to face
Nail on head come to mind, Pretty much how I feel and probably the majority on here.
Been using SN since the beginning of 2003(lost details to my other user account) But I used to love to listen to other people's storys/projects, they where some really interesting characters back in the early 2000's.

Thinking about it, I dont think you ever saw a thread where someone had been ripped off by another member??

Interesting thread.
As one who's short on time of membership but relatively large on posts here's my take on it:

Social networking/the Net is a great way to get people who wouldn't normally meet to interact. This forum's a virtual 'Subaru Sports Club'. Instead of popping down the club you log on to it.

However, in the same way that 'rules of life' would apply in a club should that not apply in a virtual one?

I've got a local.

There's a football club that has its base and every now and then one of the lads have too much and decides to dis one of The Boys, and said 'old man' will make it plain in no uncertain terms that it would not be a good thing, and everything calms down.

I've walked into pubs where there's clearly a hostile bunch of 'hard nuts' and you deal with it in one way or another. I've never started a fight in a pub and I've never walked out thinking I'd backed down - work it out.

If a goth with purple hair walked in for the first time in my local I wouldn't say "for ****'s sake are you real/normal/a retard? You weren't born with purple hair and tattoos were you, fcukwit?"
I'd like to think that even if I was invincible and/or untouchable I'd follow the morals of decency and courtesy and never stoop to such levels.

Ime Scoobynet is such a place, albeit a virtual one.
And Members, having the benefit of anonymity with pseudonyms, and kept well aware from each other by cyberspace feel that they are indeed untouchable.

It does put people off - in the past few weeks I can recall 2 new members who called it a day, one after having a way over-the-top 'initiation ceremony' and another who had seemingly looked at threads and decided we weren't for him, and asked Admin to delete his details.

There's (at least) one member who knows me from a very long way back, and he'd testify that if I walked into a place and abuse was hurled at me almost from the off then there would be blood all over the walls (mine included).

We were all in school and no doubt used to rush to wherever a fight was, looking on in some sort of juvenile bloodlust, but as we grow up we get uncomfortable with witnessing that sort of behaviour.

That's what's happening here, in this our very own 'specialist social club'.

The key is, what do members want done about it?

In our place nuisances are banned, sooner rather than later if it's physical/bullying etc. and after only a second warning if they're just a pain in the a$$.

However, one key bit is that they are warned in some way shape or form, and imo that goes a long, long way to nipping things in the bud.

The problem as I see it here (and it's not unique or specific to SN) is that too much give and take is being used as an excuse to carry on, coupled with the old 'man up, it's the Internet' chestnut.

Oh, and that the 'hard nuts' sitting in the corner think they are running things.

It takes two to tango, yes - but fights only occur when a victim stands up to a bully.

There's also another important thing to realise here:

Almost none of us join knowing anyone else or anything of their character and therefore we need to be careful how we come over.

I'm about to go to my local and I'll no doubt be subjected to verbal abuse as soon as I walk in, by the landlord and clientele. They'll have a b0ll0cking back. We know each other.
Someone visiting the pub would probably think 'oops, not my sort of place', until we started our banter about the match or whatever and they then realised we were all the best of friends.

Members of Internet forums don't have the advantage of seeing body language, hearing the tone of a comment etc. etc. We (all) can only apply our own subjectivity, what we think 'that great guy' (or 'that complete a$$hole') is like.

I'd ask people to ask themselves these two questions:
  • 'do you see yourself in there?', and ;
  • 'do you recognise these situations?'

If people ask for advice on things like stickers, dump valves etc and the response is there is no advice, why bother posting bollox.
I used to use the site a fair bit but have slowly dwindled away because of the way some people are and what some say about others cars etc. I mean if you don't like a colour that fair enough, but to then carry on and be damn right rude and nasty then that makes the op wonder why they bother if there only going to get bitched about their car.
I wont be renewing my membership again on here as I can't see the point tbh. It reminds me too much of a FB group
my views also , but falls on deaf ears unfortunately.

You keep getting chinned and carried out on a stretcher?

You don't half waffle on, why use a paragraph, when War and Peace will take up some bandwidth.

Nothing directly, I just can't abide nosey Parker's. Had one yesterday on the swap shop. I'd sold a tow hook from a car I'd broken up. The guy paid said thanks and was over the moon as he'd gotten it cheaper than advertised !!

Anyhow couple hours later, a nosey Parker pops up and says to the buyer " hey man, you know that tow hook is a fake !! " bearing in mind, I'd removed this from a breaker. The tow hook says benen ind, so advertised as such. The guy was just out to make somebody look like a mug !!

The main thing that's annoying me is the consistent posting of drivel and google copy n pasting of law and consumer acts Ect. As a result giving incorrect info. Searching company house was the latest stalking scooby projects after a bankruptcy. When it's got nothing to with him !! Going out his way to cause trouble !! Out of order !! IMHO. Being a Subaru specialist garage myself, knowing the ins an outs of business, and how hard it is in this climate to keep the doors open, I have overheads of £3500 per week before we even break even.

he is a subaru owner not an enthusiast, no technical knowledge or experience so being a smart **** is all he's got.
he amuses me due to his posts about baiting and winding members up then starts a 2am drunk rant baiting me.......

oh the irony
