I don't agree Matteeboy. Your examples are where things are not equal, subject to regulation or not wet. Where I live, I do need a lot of traction if I want to enjoy much over 200HP year round. I can actually enjoy over 500HP in the snow quite safely. Even I found that surprising, without ice but just snow it can still take full throttle from rest or out of a corner with no indicated intervention doing what appears to be a sub 4 sec 0-60. Driving the BMW in similar situations is just disappointing. I am of course not extrapolating a 325ti to all BMWs but I did have an E46 M3 through a Scottish winter. In the wet I haf my *** handed to me out the bends by a Subaru sport and only caught up at the end of the straight.
You will be able to find examples occasionally of a RWD car with a better time than a similar class badly setup AWD car. If you like Evo times you will see the RS5 taking about three seconds a lap out of the M4. Winter in the UK, or at least the deprived parts of it does that.

Honestly Matt you're starting to look like RS Matt with all his drag time slips and youtube vids.
I don't know about you but I do the occasional track day, did a couple of sprints last year and a trip down the drag strip.
On the sprints in particular I got mullered by much less powerful cars because they were better suited to the course, simple as, one in particular that was very tight & twisty we did 3 laps of saw my mate in his 1.4 Seat Cordoba beat me by almost a second a lap over 5/6 times, he has coilovers and reasonable summer tyres (I was on my winters and standard suspension) but no more than 110bhp possibly less, go figure.
Another one that had me by almost 3 seconds a lap was a Fiesta ST on slicks, I don't know what other mods he has but Iv'e seen him before and some of my friends know him. As we were leaving he did a cheeky overtake on me (obviously wanted to play) so I obliged as you do, I passed him coming of a roundabout and he didn't get close again.
Now as much as you don't want to admit it, track times really mean nothing out in the real world on a country road, sure it can give an indication of achievable performance in controlled conditions, but I suspect we both spend 99.9% of our time on greasy bumpy roads with a lot happening being unable to predict what's around the next corner, whether that be a cow pat, some mud, a damp patch under some trees that hasn't see the sun all day, or just a plain old bit of gravel build up slightly off line.
Taking all these variables into consideration neither of us would be driving at 10-10ths probably closer to 7-10ths of our ability and 5-10ths of what the car is capable of in the hands of a professional racing driver, now to suggest to me that under these conditions I've got no chance is either crass stupidity, BMW driver arrogance or your just living in cloud cuckoo land.
I don't know your level of driver skill, at a guess I'd say your reasonably decent so as not to offend you, I am by no means a driving god but I do have a certain amount of experience under my belt and can peddle a car along reasonably quickly compared to most, one thing I'll tell you for sure is you'll have it all on in your bimmer to be staying with me once I'm in front even more so if I know the road.
So please by all means draw upon all the comparison tests off all the websites you can find to give yourself confidence and comfort in your purchase being better, faster and more fun than anything else out there and I'll just sit here in smugsville smiling back at you.

So real world driving is subjective nonsense but pub talk top gear track times taken on different days in different conditions and possibly with different drivers (and thus of no value in yep, the real world) somehow are more credible?
And there's something seriously wrong wiith *me*
Brilliant

So an M135i has no control?
The ONLY place 4WD has an advantage is getting the power down out of a bend. What proportion of a fast road requires getting the power down out of a bend? 5% maybe? Or even less.
4WD has more traction but no more grip. And at higher speeds, drivetrain losses slow them down.
People really don't "get" RWD/FWD/4WD in performance cars. It astonishes me.

Your attempt at Devildog's character assination; you make a lot of unsubstantiated claims, for example in post #485, and what you say with regards to Devildog, to me, it not too far removed as reflection of yourself.

Maybe John, Devil and I have a skewed perspective living north of the border but it's fair to say that for at least 4 months of the year getting power down with any 2WD vehicle is an exercise in frustration.
I've only got 168bhp (granted some useful torque) and I regularly bleed power away in 2nd and 3rd gear. The electronic differential helps a bit - especially when you learn to lean on it just right - but the system is still braking a wheel in a bid to try and transfer available engine power to the road.
I'm no 4WD fanboy and, in fact, I think it's likely my next car will be 2WD; however, I'm under no illusions that I'm making a compromise for much of the year. Matt's posts often have a whiff of "conquer all". While the 135i is a desirable and well respected car, like every other it has it's limitations. On a daily basis I drive mile after mile up ****ty farm roads and I honestly find it really hard to justify driving any car. If I was making decisions with my head I'd drive a beat up old Landcruiser or Disco.

Yeah it just reads as "I WIN AT CARS, WOOOO, GO ME", then argue the point ad nauseum, sometimes aggressively if someone dares to voice a contrary opinion, sometimes flounce off, unless someone has something patently more impressive, then its all a bit deferential.
Dont get me wrong, 135i is a great car, but there is more to this cars/discussion lark than buying the fastest BMW du jour every few years and telling everyone you will be faster and generally more awesome, I personally am not massively impressed by acquiring a car off a manufacturers price list, it just means somehow you can pay for it, well done but that isnt what car forums are here for, I could do that, go and have a look in projects on here, Retro Rides and places like that, that what impresses me, there is only so much kudos you can get for a standard BMW Hatchback however much you go on about it, I want to hear about it getting modified, the mpg, its shortcomings, how much to service etc etc, not that its quicker than my car, I can never think of a scenario where I will need to get somewhere earlier than you.
Your "Junior Supercar" line has passed into Pistonheads folklore.

Although just as it gets good, Matt buggers off to sulk
I sent him this PM yesterday around lunchtime, but no reply yet (although I'm on his ignire list so maybe he didn't get it )
Come on Matt
Stop being so precious.
I obviously know what buttons to press, but you don't do yourself any favours, do you
I recon we'd actually get on in real life
(the inference being that the internet, and particularly this place, isn't real life)
Or maybe you'd think I'm just an arsey *******, but who cares

I was looking at buying a m135i a few years ago when all the great review came out. But when I went to test drive it, it looked pig ugly sitting there, felt slow compared to my car and I don't get me started on the steering feel. I was hoping for something much much better. I could have leased one for about £350 a month with a deposit. But in the end I spend the deposit and a years lease on upgrading my 335i n54. Now I have something special..

I'm back IF the usual idiots don't ruin every thread. If the trolls bugger off. If the halfwits leave off.
I'm back IF the interesting members are willing to discuss cars and other interests.
But it's my choice to be back and if it gets drowned out by muppets with a massive personality crisis trying to one up the universe, I'm gone again.
So you decide whether this is an interesting forum or a home for retards with a chip on their shoulder.
Not been using the BM much recently but it's still fun. The Subaru has been used lot: awesome Winter hack.

If we opened you up would we find a sense of humour bypass?
Just looking to make light of Matt's somewhat dramatic comeback.
But as you've chosen to comment in that manner, Maz, its quite clear at whom Matt's comments were aimed. Perhaps if he had able to come back in a less defensive yet aggressive manner he'd be better received ?
Statements such as "retards", "halfwits", "personality crisis" and "chip on their shoulder" are hardly an endearing opening reintroduction, are they?
None of us are perfect, we're not even close. And because of that its always better to look inwards first to address our own failings before apportioning blame to others.
Just sayin

For someone that considers themselves so astute, you aren't the sharpest tool are you?
Anyway back to CARS. I'm slightly surprised no one else has bought one yet; they do tick a lot of boxes. I guess a more natural progression is to another AWD four pot but you do lose character. Plenty here have BMs but not an M1/235i. Do try one if you're thinking of one; they're just about dipping under £20k used and are a huge amount of car for the money.
They're also in a unique class; yes other hatches go as (or nearly as) fast but none are RWD with a six pot turbo. It's what proper performance cars have and its a great combination.
Get shopping, take long way home. Enjoy.

I was bidding on a 135i M sport as a track toy, but it was getting silly on the price. I like the N54 tunability and the price of the older cars. The HPFP doesn't scare me, the engine internals and gearbox internals seem robust as changing those is aggro I don't need on axle stands in my garage.

There are some monster 135is around and definitely very tuneable but as a standard car, the M135i is definitely more appealing overall; especially as it's hatch, not a saloony/coupe.
If you like modding though, 400bhp isn't hard to get in the 135i.
Some 400bhp+ M135is are coming through now but they need a fair bit of reworking once you hit about 380 horses.

LOL!!
The internals of the N55 are a step backwards in terms of quality from the N54 apparently, according to an ultra long thread I persevered with on one of the E9x sites. Something which I didn't know when I went for an N55 powered 335i and only discovered when I had notions of tuning it.
Cheers,
Grant

The M1/235i get forged pistons and a few other goodies over the 335i/535i plus more bhp and torque.
They've been very reliable so far; much more so than the N54 engined cars (which include the 1M and current Z4 35is).
But they are harder to tune.
