I looked at a couple of houses today, both period terraces. Typical FTB'er properties in my area. One was tiny, stunk of cats ****, very small, had had a dodgy survey, but great location, will avoid. Other was great - being a bit bigger - but reeked of cig smoke - it had only just gone up for sale but I noticed three other people viewing it when I was there. The market is really busy right now.

Yeah I think you are correct of course but then otoh for my price target (ish) of 250k it would mean some people getting the 12.5k (5%) help from the state, but still needing a considerable mortgage. I mean if you can't save up 12.5k how can you afford to borrow almost 250k?

TDW is looking in a very select area of Manchester dontcha know?
I would prefer to buy something a bit further out, twice the floorspace and drive an extra 10 mins..

Sounds like a £1000 a month mortgage though ??
We are thinking of moving and we havent had a mortgage for 7 years since we paid off our current property, just wondering how it all worked now ?

Hmm maybe. I'm talking about Hale and Altrincham (do you know these places). Hale is mega expensive. I wouldn't call the terraces in Hale, 'suburbia', since they are kind of centered around Hale itself. Go to Timperley and buy a semi for the same price and yes it is suburbia to me. Suburbia is just some places with houses and roads.

I'm a FTB'er so not that much clue how it works. I have at least 50% deposit so mortgage won't be so big.

Yea,i do know Hale and Altrincham..... Hale is nice, but too close to Wythenshawe for me..
I would be trying to head over to Ashley,Mobberley way...
I dont know the official definition of suburbs, but rows of terraces and Barratt style estates are what my mind comes up with..
Victorian terraces can be gorgeous.....I wouldnt live on a new build housing estate if it was free. What a depressing way to spend your life..

I only half joke, seriously it just about allows to (hopefully) buy a small house...in what is sure a desirable area (outside London of course). I don't want a mega mortgage I know that, just something manageable that I can clear in 5 years.

Some stuff does come up Ashley and Mobberly way, but I'd bit lonely stuck out there on my own (being single) having to drive everywhere.
Hale is full of douche bags driving Range Rover sports, but it does have some life going on at least.

If you'll be able to pay it off in 5yrs then that's ok, but I still question WHY buy if you don't have a family?
Cash is king ATM and the freedom to go anywhere in the world at a moments notice has got to be a bonus.
I'd look at thailand, sucky fcuky 10 dorah.

Just had a flick through rightmove and you could get into Alderley edge and surrounding area's for the kinda money you wanna spend. At least out of the flightpath..
Dont worry about being lonely....lol... Moving to a new area and getting out and about is brilliant...Not seeing the same old faces is a good thing.

It's certainly not a great investment opportunity but it's the right time personally to buy a house and I'm not leveraging myself much...very manageable even if interest rates go up to 'normal' levels. But I know what you mean and it is very annoying. I was talking to a mate recently and telling him I was basically being shaken out of the tree. Do I want to rent for another 5 or 10 years? Not really.

Yeah exactly. I loath new build homes and most semis are very depressing unless built prior to the war and even then aren't great. I certainly couldn't live in a 70's or 80's house. Most of the victorian terraces are excellent build quality although some of the oldest ones can be a bit ropey now.
