Can you show me where I can download the latest OSX or iWork for free.

 

OSX is not FREE, you pay a huge premium for it when you buy the machine.

You cannot go and pick up OSX and install it on your wintel laptop (legally) for free.

You cannot pick up free productivity apps and install them on a wintel machine along with OSX legally.

You can buy an overpriced Apple machine and get proprietary updates for free.

You can however get free open office for your wintel machine, a full range of office productivity apps, for an OS that has 89% of the desktop operating system market not 6%.

Whilst Windows doesn't offer free OS updates between major releases it does offer free updates to the existing OS and with Windows 8 it gave a free upgrade to 8.1 so Apple really are not doing anything ground breaking or "free" just giving better value on an overpriced machine in a tough market.

You'll only get osx for free if you own a mac, it's only available on Apple machines.

 

That's just dumb. Lets make it simple for you. The last major update cost £20, a trivial amount compared to Windows I know, this major update cost nothing, that's £20 cheaper, in other words free. There will be a lot of minor updates, those have always been free.

The last major update of Windows cost £100, the next one will most likely cost£100. That's not free.

 

Log into OSX and click the update button. It used to cost money, now it's free, that makes it free.

No, you are being dumb, windows does major service pack updates regularly for free, but a shift from windows 7 to windows 8 costs £72 not £100 that is to replace the whole operating system ala new OSX.

It is more expensive to write an OS for millions of different machines than it is to do an update for a minute number of identical machines so no wonder windows charges for this.

Apple charge so much upfront for a new OS as the hardware itself is nothing special, just a few peripheral gimicks and a mouse that weighs a ton, so they can afford to give them away for free. The os with a new windows machine is £72 which is way less than the premium price Apple charge for their OS (and don't doubt it is the OS you are paying for as the Hardware is nothing special) so a free update should almost be a given, it was nigh on free before at £20, so a drop of £20 on the life of a £1-2000 machine really is nothing to shout about.

Jack you seem to know the price of everything and the value of nothing so your quote that Apple will revolutionise the way OS updates are given is just hogwash.

A shift from Mountain Lion to Mavericks cost nothing, that's £72 pounds less, which in my eyes is a bargain, in your eyes somehow Apple are ripping off it's users, delusional.

You are without doubt one of the most deluded cretins I have ever had the displeasure to discuss stuff with, so I am gonna leave you to it.

 

You can buy a brand new decent spec 15" Windows laptop for £400 or less whereas you'd need over £1700+ for a similar macbook. This leaves over £1300 free to buy a lot of updates and still leave enough spare cash to buy another even better spec laptop in a few years time with further updates and still leave cash in your pockets. That to me is a lot better than what will be an old poor spec macbook with 'free' £20 updates.

 

LOL. You can buy a Hyundai for a lot less than a Ferrari, both have four wheels and just the one engine, the Hyundai has more seats so in your eyes it's the better vehicle.

OK Jon, show me the £400 Laptop that not only matches but is better than the £1700 Macbook. We'll only consider the initial purchase price in this test, ignoring the support, FREE OS updates, FREE Productivity apps, excellent customer care and build materials.

Off you go and don't come back until you've found it. Bear in mind that it contains components that aren't available in any other machine yet, so you may be a while.

Of course the laptop won't have a retina display (1080 instead) or a "beautiful" case but is that worth £800? You decide.

 

Except a Mac is more like owning an Audi. Looks good, runs well and generally has a much nicer fit/feel than the cheaper alternative (the similarity between Audi owners and Mac owners also works).

 

So, that's double Jon's price and not close to the spec. Fail. And don't forget to add £100 for Windows 8.1

No, because that is not what I said. I said there are plenty of decent and similar spec laptops for £400, you don't need me to show you, just google it. I'm happy with a decent processor, RAM, storage and screen. Do I need a Retina screen? No! Do I need a brushed aluminium casing? No! Do I need Thunderbolt video output? No! Do I like £1300 in my pocket? I most certainly do!!

 

That's still with Win8.1 I just prefer 7. Same price, same spec.

Also it's not £190 to upgrade as you are saying.

 

I bought Windows 8 Pro for my Windows 7 laptop when it came out, cost me £25 to upgrade. I upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro for free last week.

 

It's not free, the cost is built into the product up front

Lets be clear here, Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 is in no way similar to Mountain Lion to Mavericks, Microsoft issued a bug fix, a year late, but they did it.

It's so funny reading all of your butt hurt comments, I don't know why you all get so upset when Apple do great things, it's not good for you. You should try praising them for once, after all, you'll all benefit eventually, give it two years and your phones and computers will catch up. Until then, enjoy your pub talk about big numbers.
