I wonder if the petrol companies will follow airlines and start 'Frequent Filler' programmes?

The mrs loves it since I swapped over to tesco momentum as the club card point have gone up loads

Is that true about there stil being 10 litres left when the fuel light comes on? Mine is halfway between the last notch and empty and still no light, I was worried about making it to a fuel station!

Also, would it harm my car if I used regular fuel as a back up? I was wondering what I'd do if I,was running low with no premium fuel about. Car is standard wrx 04

Would be fine with regular in if thats all was available. Ive had mine right down to fuel light on and never got more than 50 litres in. (60 litre tank) the bigger problem is fuel surge even at 1/4 of a tank

Fuel surge is when the fuel is low leaving a lot of spare room n the tank so when you corner the fuel that's left will slosh over to the side away from the fuel pump pick up starving it and the engine of fuel and this can cause your engine damage

Premium fuel burns more efficiently but more importantly combusts in a more controllable manner which prevents 'det', premature detonation ie it explodes too early thereby throwing the cycle of pistons out of sync, placing too much strain on components and basically destroying the engine.

Although not the same, nor necessarily the same result, a little like if the cambelt goes, the cylinders fire incorrectly, in the wrong order and that's the engine's lot.

Cheers bet not run it to low then!

With regard to the premium fuel, it sounds like real bad news then to use regular unleaded. Will it be safer bearing in mind mine is standard? Don't want to damage my baby!

Certainly premium would be my prefered choice. But on a standard newage uk car,driven in a reasonable manor. Its unlikely that the odd bit of regular will cause any damage

If you HAVE to use regular keep it off boost, ie don't drive it hard 3k rpm max, only put enough in to get you to a shell or tesco and brim it with the expensive stuff.

Avoid BP stations subarus don't like it.

There has been a lot of debate about which fuels they will run on, as it's a maf based system it WILL run on 95 ron but it's really not recommended that you do unless you absolutely have to, you could also buy a bottle of NF octane booster and carry that in the boot for emergencies.

When detonation occurs the combustion temperature is too high, hence melted pistons, absolutely nothing to do with pistons running out of sync. after all they're still connected to the same crank journals.

If the cambelt goes the engine stops, the cylinders don't fire incorrectly, they don't fire at all, they never will if the camshafts aren't turning.

So the Mrs put 20 quid of e regular in which is only quarter of a notch. If I now fill it with vpower will I be able to use as intended? Or am I best chucking some octane booster in?

Fill with v power or momentem. It will be fine. Theres lots of scaremongering about fuel. On a standard uk wrx it will be fine

Slightly disagree there.

When det occurs the result is that pistons can get melted ie not perform as a team as they should.
Not all pistons - some of them.

That means that the standard cycle ie. 1 does compression, 1 does ignition, 1 does induction and 1 does exhaust is not synchronised, because one of the four is er...basically foo-bahed.

That results in the operation of the crank being NOT what was intended by the manufacturer, and hence the entire process of producing spec'd power um.... not as was intended.

The pistons are not buddies in a team, they're pieces of metal and unless the cambelt breaks the standard four stroke cycle for each cylinder, induction, compression, power, exhaust is set, forever, it cannot become unsynchronised.

If you get pre det then the det is going to be pushing the piston back down when its still trying to come up putting to much strain on the rods crank and bearings

Yeah right. My ra seems to have a 42 litre tank and im happy if I see more than 160 miles out of it

Said it for me

The other thing is that (eg the cambelt breaks) residual processes such as crank still turning, pistons still going up and down, other pistons continuing their cycle will throw the whole timing sequence out. Each cylinder will be stuck in whatever stroke it was on but the piston won't be sync'd to it.

Anyway, I now know I can get 250 miles to the tank.

I once got 400 out of my Catalunya, back and forth the M50/M5/M6 to the Lake District, in a tranquil mood each way.
