A local specialist to me is still accepting pre orders for the day of release for the PS4, he's also willing to take used PS3 games in PX against the PS4.
So I'm off down there tomorrow with a bag full of old games I've not played for ages to trade in against the PS4, an extra controller plus 2/3 games.
Before anyone says it I'm still going to have to pay a big lump of money when I collect the PS4, but better to get rid of the games I haven't played for ages rather than have them continue to gather dust.

I will ring around on the 28th and see whether its worth heading into Game or similar who are doing midnight releases. Doubt I will have much joy though unless Sony pulled out the stops and ramped up production.

I would be interested to see what happens there as literally everywhere you read says if you did not order before Aug 6 you have no chance to get one on launch day unless your lucky enough to find a shop that had a cancellation or two but even then I assume they would give that to the next person on the waiting list.

I can pick it up from midnight if I really want it, I'm not that sad 8.00am will do me.

Strange how they can do that when nowhere else seems to be able to. Where is this shop?

I am waiting to see what happens with prices etc but on a tech point of view it seems to me that the PS4 is quite a bit more powerful than the Xbox.
I love my 360, but before that I had PS1 and PS2.
I think I might be tempted back to Sony this time round as in another 5 years I think that extra power and RAM in the Sony is going to be a massive advantage.
We are already seeing launch games running quite a big difference in resolution.

It was and still is, it's just that the Cell CPU wasn't a mainstream processor so it was easier to develop for the PC and XBox in conjunction.
From what I understand it was inherently more difficult to code for the PS3, but as the PS4 now uses more or less mainstream AMD CPU & GPU's it will be a far better system for developers.

Sony has had a bit of a recovery this year, but last year was really bad for them. Microsoft on the other hand resisted the 2011 downturn a bit better and their gowth in 2013 has been fairly good where as Sony had a good start to 2013 but recently they have been running into problems again.

I don’t think retailers had an option to buy pre-order allocation as such. Was first come first served hence why Sony announced the August 6th cut off point. If you gets yours on release day with such a late pre-order then fair play to you but I am not convinced you will. What does their guarantee give you if they don’t deliver?

Hmmm well in a dramatic turn of events it seems we may be moving house which means I can ill afford to spend £500 on the Xbox One (plus a couple of games).
So should I cancel the pre-order or get it, then sell it?..

If it was a PS4 I would take it off your hands plus some beer tokens.

The new consoles are only 'next gen' compared to the previous gen. They're already behind what is possible on even mid-range PCs, and in the next 7 years of the life of the consoles that gap will increase even further.
