Tbh I've double checked EVERYTHING as its been done, as I haven't done it on a Subaru engine, I can't go from memory. So its to my research, look at the Subaru Workshop Manual, check with Dylan and he checks his worksheets, then I double check the double checking and then do it. Hence everything taking longer, so I know everything is as it should be (hopefully).
But I am still apprehensive with the engine, mainly that I have spent a lot of money, time, and effort. And with posting EVERYTHING up on here as I go along I'm broadcasting to the world then, so any failure is gonna be well known, and as you know with some they are quick to point and laugh in a Nelson from The Simpsons style!!
But mainly it's that I'd be royally screwed tbh, the heads cannot take being skimmed again, the block I'd need to replace, so would be pointless going open deck.
So if all goes wrong its Closed Deck Block, new bearings, new heads, new crank, new bearings, bore the block, new gaskets, new rings, new oil pump, new water pump, etc etc etc etc. It's a BIG list, and tbh would make it a bit beyond my finances (after this anyways), and with my Landy waiting to be finished also, I'd probably either find somewhere to keep my Impreza for a year or more, and finish my Landy then get the new engine built, then installed etc etc etc.
These are the thoughts going around my head, and why the closer to the finish I get the more apprehensive I get about turning her over. She may well just work, but my brain is programmed to work out the alternatives, so if they are needed they are there lol.
Even if money was no option I would still rather build it myself and have the hands on experience, and know that it was my hard work come what may. Than pay someone else and take the credit. I was walking around on Rally Day and some guy had his bonnet up (no one we know), and was asked by someone next to him what had been done, and he said it was all his own work and he built it, yet named about 3-4 companies who all "did the bottom end" or "fitted the head" or "fitted the gearbox" and "ported and polished the head" etc.
It's not an Ego thing at all with me on this, I don't have a great deal of spare cash after bills, and savings. So have always been brought up with a make do, or mend attitude, passing spanners to my brother at the age of 7 as he rebuilt his first car a Triumph Dolomite Sprint, and then my own of teaching myself to weld, buying cars with issues and sorting them. To remind myself that I bought this car for £500 with a dead engine, dead gearbox, and was in a hell of a state. Some of you boys in Neath will know this car well, having been sprayed luminous yellow at one point (before my ownership). And I bought it on a spur of the moment thing as I ALWAYS wanted one, exactly like I have shape wise. Same with my Landy, and previously my Vectra. So its in the bones really.
Anyways enough of the essay from me, I'll hopefully get it finished and fitted before Friday, as I'm back in work
So keep things crossed for me, I'll have everything crossed, and even considering sacrificing a chicken to help (Southern Fried Variety lol).
Cheers buddy, it's appreciated.

As long as you go by the numbers, dot the i's and cross the t's then you should be fine. You'll feel on edge for the first 1000 miles, as you be listening for every squeak and tap.
I'll never forgot Bob telling me off as I wouldn't go full throttle on a mapping run In the end you just have to bite the bullet and go for it, it's either going to go fast or going to go bang!

Yeah I know bud, but doesn't stop me being concerned.
The way I see it that the fact I am concerned is a good thing, as it makes me be careful, and that extra care should pay off. Just makes the reward that much sweeter. But you can't have that sweet success, without the equal amount of potential failure.
Either way I will document what happens, and the progress of either development, or failure investigation.
But whatever happens "I did it, my way!!" lol.

Right update time.
Spot the deliberate mistake
Oil pump and water pump both fitted, new cam cover gaskets and seals, and all siliconed up.
If you didn't notice the bottom two pulleys are on the wrong side, I basically put them on anywhere, as I wanted to use the tub they were in, so will sort tomorrow as the cambelt goes on.
Then the Manifolds, inlet and exhaust, with Clutch.
Then fit plugs and she should be done

Nice, not far now!
Is there crap in the small water pipe in the second pic? (It's hard to tell in the pic). If there is, then I'd strip them back off and give them a blow through with an airline.

Great work mate, really coming along now!
You must be starting to get excited about firing it up for the first time eh?
I know that plastic breather cover thing there! Thats the very thing that (along with the GREEN BRACKETS OF DEATH) makes changing the injectors a ****ing nightmare lol!!!!

Update time.
Gates Racing belt fitted. Has to be one of the easiest timing belts I have EVER fitted tbh, the belt lines did line up, but after a rotation of the engine to check all was as it should they don't line up, so that will explain that. The belt was rather easier than I was expecting, having previously done a Vauxhall V6 timing belt last running decompression plates so spacing the heads up and out, but anyhoo the pics.
RCM flywheel. Could do with a light skim, but nothing too major there.
Manifolds fitted.
And she's home, well currently in the boot of my Peugeot
MASSIVE thanks to Dylan, for a number of reasons. For use of his garage, for him being the person there to lend a hand, and for second opinions, and answering of questions. And mainly to be the person I bored nearly $hitless with "Does this look ok to you??", and "can you pass.....", "where the **** did I do with.....", "can you see the ........ socket anywhere??"
Just so glad I've got her home finally, and thoroughly proud of myself for having done what I have and to have gotten to where I have. I just hope my hard work will show when it comes to turning the key, and everything works as it should, then more importantly when I run under boost and see if it all holds together

Right NO PROGRESS today, was a day of doing everything bar work on the Urabus.
Anyhoo did some emptying of the Pug.
These have done their jobs now, empty packets.
The old standard Rods I have removed.
The box of old seals and old head bolts, and other stuff I have replaced.
Spare bolts , Most of which are for putting the cam cover on, and ancillaries, rest are bits and bobs that I have replaced with new.

Am working Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, so no lol. What I am needing is a hand to get the engine out of the Pug, I have a bread crate on wheels to get it up my drive, but I'm not physically strong enough to get the engine out on my own, well without damage anyways.
Once its out I can put it on my engine stand to complete the last odds and sods, then crane it into the car, but I can't crane it out onto the bread crate on my own either, as you've seen my road. I'd end up with a Subaru powered bread crate heading towards Llanelli!!

My mate popped up, so I nabbed him and said come and gimmie a hand a sec
Engine is now in my garage, so I can spend the time in the dry building her up, and then drop her in either Wed or Thursday. Then spend the rest of that day sorting her out, all the pipes and hoses and Radiator etc etc etc.

And for the bored here is a pic of me working on my Engine, there I'm installing my oil pump, and water pump.
Please ignore the gurn, someone thought it would be funny to take random photos at inopportune times lol.
Note the used head bolt propping the rear of the engine up, to stop it rocking back off the sump. Propper job!! lol.
And photo difference, mine nearly all on a Nokia Lumia 920, compared to the above on an iPhone 5, shockingly bad!!

Nope, waiting on a couple of bits and bobs, then I can start. But working tomorrow night, for 4 nights. So will sort what I need, then do the install over the next few days after that.

But yeah sorted the issue, but by taking a drill to it. Will speak to the supplier, and I will let them know of the issue twice, then the subsequent fix that I have made. Maybe this or another remedy I thought of, could change the design so that there is no further issues.

Yeah pretty close now, will probably try and get it in next weekend. But I have one or two teething issues atm, not with the build, but with one or two "extras" that if left would become an issue. One that I know Ty had, but that seems to be solved, but need to speak to the supplier so that it doesn't become a fault for others.
