Sigh! Dosent stop them doing it though
And if a dog kills someone it WILL be put down and not sent to prison!

And again owners do, as to why it's their responsibility. As for kids etc being safe with dogs. They will never be safe in this world everything you do is a risk! You just minimise the risk in what/how things are done in life.

I give up too, please don't reply.

Should you kill a dog if it catches your pet? http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/t...ack&mid=206868

I have posted on here before about one of my dogs, a weimaraner, which was well trained, well cared for and regularly exercied. The dog was of a friendly and loyal disposition, she was intelligent and eager to please. She liked the company of children, despite her size, she was very gentle around them although never left unattened with them. I had no concerns about her being aggressive at all. This changed on a morning when I went out with both my dogs to feed them, she saw a cat on top of the fence that surrounded my house. She ran at the fence, the cat either fell, or jumped into my garden, she turned and chased it catching it behind the shed. This resulted in the worst possible outcome for the cat. From that day my view and perception of my own dog and what she was capable of changed. I learned that all breeds have a base set of instincts, these can be heighted or surpressed to a certain extend based on how the dog is treated or allowed to behave, however they can not be eradicated. Her inbuilt hunt / chase instinct took over, and she did what was natural to her.

The thread I linked to refers to a bloke killing a dog for catching a chicken, which apart from losing a few feathers, was unharmed.

Yes, I read a bit of that thread

Firstly, taken to court, bullsh1t

Secondly, assuming the original description of the incident is correct, then I have no problem and would do the same

The dog should be under control, not rampaging in my garden

Huge dog lover, but agree, if my dog ran into your garden and showed any sign of aggression I'd be devastated but wouldn't try and take legal action against you.

As it stands my dog would be wagging her tail, ears down and probably roll on her back

Did the dog try to attack the two cops?

Anyway, certain dogs should be muzzled at all times.
Last night I unfortunately saw a rottweiler break free of its owner enough to nail a cat that was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The cat lost that battle, and ended up in two pieces.

Any dog that gets in to my garden needs to get out before my Newfoundland starts mating with her!

The dogs in my neighbourhood are either stupid or very clumsy, this week I have rescued 4 dogs that have gotten their leads caught around the lamp post outside the newsagents.

What if it a male dog in the garden - does it still try to mate?

Maybe all dogs should just be muzzled in public.
Nicely black and white from a legal point of view and would solve a lot of problems.
Could even legalise hunting with dogs at the same time?
Just a thought - don't think the dog loving British public would go for it though.

Going to be quite difficult to play fetch with a muzzle on. I have a Golden Retriever, and they live to...well retrieve, so it would be pretty cruel to muzzle him, especially as he poses absolutely no risk to anyone.

Well all I can say is that I hope you never end up having to say "he never did that before"

Well obviously yes.

But that seems like an argument for locking him away in a box.

He actually poses far more of a hazzard from his general exuberance/ jumping up (being only 12 month old) there is so little chance of him attacking anyone, it seems daft to even think about muzzling him.

I'm sure it has happened, but I've never heard of a Golden Retriever harming anyone.

It would certainly simplify things.

I used to have a dog myself - border collie.
I had two dogs attack him for no reason whatsoever during his 15 years of life.
One was a stupid wee terrier - grabbed my dog by the throat and the wee b@stard wouldn't let go.

Second one was more frightening as I also had my son (about 5 or 6) with me on his wee trike
It was a staffordshire bull terrier cross of some sorts, in that it was taller than a normal bull terrier.
Anyway this thing also attacked - from the owners garden I might add.
Grabbed my dog by the back of the neck.
I picked my son up and put him in a garden and used the trike to beat off the bull terrier - which failed by the way, despite hitting it on the head
The owner had to prise the dogs jaw open.

My dog was on a leash on both occasions.

Any dog can turn nasty just like people when you get someone angry like wishing death upon your family etc. Just keep your loved ones controlled and dissaplined the best you can.

Until a incident has happened then you can only go from there and do the appropriate thing. Locking everything up and throwing away the key is not the answer.

Plenty of incidents have happened with certain breeds of dog, and yet we do nothing. They need banning already.

I know I'll be flamed but I can't understand this fascination with keeping animals in your home.

Many people who have pets moan about the difficulty with trying to make ends meet yet spend money on feeding cats/dogs. I quite like some dogs (and had two as a child) but there is no way I'd have one in my house.

And when I see people picking up their dog's sh7te of the pavement it just makes me laugh

Indeed - must be a very strange feeling picking up a warm turd.

I was recently out washing my car and a man with a Labrador sized dog decided to stop and unload.
I stopped washing when the man began heaving during the pick up process
In his defence, it looked a rather loose one

F**k knows why.
Maybe it's something to do with the "human condition?

I'm sure it has happened, but I've never heard of a Golden Retriever harming anyone.
There were multiple retriever attacks, including three Goldens and one Labrador, and there were two fatal attacks by very small breeds: a Dachshund, which is a very small scenthound bred to work as a terrier, and one Yorkshire Terrier, which is among the smallest of all dogs. Finally, in ten of the attacks, the dogs were only described as mixed breed.[5]

Please excuse my lack of intellectual rigour, but I'm not really interested in dogs - just amazed by the fascination people seem to display.
