How do you know whether they pay tax or not. You have just decided they don't based on the fact they are immigrants!

Anyway I have learnt something. If you want a job doing in your garden you need to abide by the SN NSR rules;

Ask if the company employ immigrants, if so do the follwiing:

1) Ask if you can have a proper invoice and pay by cheque
2) Ask for the tax records of their employees
3) Find out exactly how what you need done is to be carried out and research what certification is required to carry out those procedures. Ask for said certification
4) Find out what clothing needs to be worn to carry out those procedures and ensure it is.
5) Call HSE and go on a college course to learn how to conduct a risk assessment of the job.
6) Do so and employ a site foreman to manage the job on your behalf and liase with the workforce
7) Employ an accountant to scrutinise next year's accounts of the company to ensure the money you paid was declared and that the correct VAT, corporation tax and income tax was paid on this.

If they don't employ immigrants then cart on regardless as they are good old British lads and what could possibly go wrong ... oh and they won't trun up anyway.

I thught I was doing well asking for an invoice and paying by cheque... most people on here would have asked for a discount for cash!

What's the HMRC hotline again? I hear they are paying a big reward for turning in those who employ tax dodging gardeners?

All p1sstaking aside when I posted this thread I mainly did so to see what the reaction would be and I am glad to say that just about all the usual suspects (bar mrmadcap strangely) have chipped in with pretty much the comments I thought would be made.

The sad thing is if the first guys (we'll call them non-immigrants) who turned up had done a good job instead of a disappearing act and I had posted to that effect no one would have said a bad thing about them... ah well it's the way of NSR

This is the problem we face, customers happy to turn a blind eye when it suits them.

I personally think all the HSE stuff is way OTT, but sadly we have to adhere to it to be covered legally and by our insurance company.

But then on the flip side we do get the clear up jobs where pikeys leave an almighty mess!

We shook hands and he duly turned up 3 days later and partially cut down one tree before leaving saying he'd be back the next day.... he never returned and didn't reply to my phone message. I didn't pay him a bean so no worries there, but I now had a wrecked tree all over the place.

In the supermarket on the weekend I saw an ad for gardening servies so called them. Geordie lad with a East European workforce. Spoke to him at 11am yesterday. He said did I mind them working in the evening? Of course not I said so after working on another job until 4:30pm yesterday they all turned up here at 5pm... 4 of them and the Geordie manging the procedure. Job done and perfect by 8:30pm. All rubbish removed ... £280!!!

The lad told me he has never been so busy and these bloody useless workshy sponging immigrants are happy to work any time. He pays them £9-£10 an hour and they are happy to work 50/60 hours a week. When he had a group of Brits working for him he said it was nothing but trouble!

This is the second time I have encountered this sort of story recently. Makes you wonder really!
Bloody cheap that is for two evergreens, next door neighbour was quoted £500.00 for one...

Talk about sweeping generalisations

Just my two penneth worth. I work for a company that employs around 300, mainly foreign workers. English. Portuguese, Polish, Lithuanian, Latvian, Russian etc in roughly even proportions with a few South Africans thrown in for luck. Many have been with the company longer than I have.

The main employment rule of the company is that all workers speak and read English. Very strict H&S is enforced. Dismissals for infringing procedures ranging from not wearing the supplied PPE to failing alcohol breath tests etc are not unknown unfortunately.

They are all paid better than minimum wage and all pay income tax and NI, some even contribute to the company pension scheme.

A few own their own property. The rest rent as family units. Very few live in HMO, and those that do tend to be young and single which is as you would expect.

Surprisingly few want to return to their country of origin for more than a holiday. Obviously some do and have done, mostly with enough money to purchase a property or start a business, and good luck to them. A couple of the young ladies have been seen around town sporting British flags on their kiddie buggies during major sporting events.

As a general rule they work very hard. When the lines are down they are expected to sweep up, clean etc unsupervised. Never hear "I'm not paid to sweep up" and are quite a happy, chatty, sociable bunch really.

Gaps are filled via agency and some are offered permanent positions when they have proved reliable and positions become available. Occasionally we get English agency workers and we have a sweepstake on which break time they will disappear, never to be seen again lol. Even more occasionally we are surprised by one who doesn't leg it.

Oh, and we have been in profit every year I have worked there.

I know there are companies out there that do take the ****, but there are many more companies like the one I work for that treat their workforce properly and simply would not exist without the migrant workforce.

Must admit I agree with the above post. I know loads of immigrants. All working above board and have no desire to return to their own countries. Although still express a desire to move onto somewhere nicer. But as it stands theyre all happy here contributing to society and the government in the correct manner. Majority work alot harder than any locals that I know - includes myself - Although I have the luxury of being an expert worker so only have to work at about 60%

Congratulations you have managed to get someone who employs foreign workers to work unsocial hours at a cheaper price than a British worker would! Hopefully next time similar people can get foreign workers in on the computer software issue so we aren't getting ripped off by more British workers! either

Lol, the irony is the bloke spent most of last week playing down immigrants breaking the law, then employs 4.

It never happened , if anything I've learnt on here is that f1 loves to try prove people wrong so given the first chance to do that by uploading a receipt he replies with the typical.

"I don't need to prove myself to anybody"

at the risk of posting a serious post for a moment which is not in my usual nature.

I work for a well known trade union and there may well be a few companys that treat the migrant work force well there are far more that exploit then and use them as cheap labour.
mass immigration has not helped this country at all.

This thread is getting better. The usual suspects so crushingly desperate to try and get a dig in and not being very good at it as usual. That's because they are thick as ****

Hey 94impreza I had 4 immigrants in my garden and they didn't steal my car, rape my wife or loot my houes.... not what you would expect eh?

Oh and to Paullen. When I go and tune someone's database or build them an ecommerce website I don't expect them to know how it works or what standards and legalities need to be adhered to as it's my job to know that.

I wanted some trees cut down.. I rang someone who gave me a price, I accepted it and the job was done with an invoice as I asked. I am not tunring any blind eye as I have no idea what laws, certificates are required and couldn't care less as it is not my job to know that!!! It's gardening and anyone can do that quite frankly!

Something no one had bet on, so we gave him the sweepstake pot as a reward. He was a nice lad and came back a few more times. We were pleased but not surprised to find he managed to get a full time position at another local food factory.

Some of the foreigners leg it too, but much rarer to the point we don't bother with the sweepstake.

you obviously work for a company that treat there workers well, unfortunately a lot of them don't and treat them very poorly with low pay, no rights and long hours.

The thing I want to ask is why F1 didn't do the job himself, he could have asked his Australian boyfriend with his big chopper to offer assistance

If you're trying to tick all the equality and diversity boxes I had a pikey knock on the door the other day trying to get rid of some tarmac asking if I wanted my driveway re-surfacing, do you want his number?

That sounds like an argument for more employment regulation than simply one against mass immigration

I am sure most immigrants don't aspire to simply be used as cheap labour
