Excluding my current Type R on this list and I've had somewhere near to 30 cars .......
1. Opel Manta (4x4 Cosworth powered - got nicked) crazy but I'd smile after every drive.
2. Classic Mini 1440 race engine & a massive smile when driving.
3. BMW 320D just about everything I wanted in a car (a 330D would maybe at no. 1)
4. VW Bora 2.3 V5. Engine note was great, quick if not super fast, build quality, comfort and features.
5. Opel Manta GTE had everything going for it, just not quite enough of everything (hence building no.1)
Worst car - I was going to say my old Seat Ibiza (1.4 Porsche engineered lol) then I remembered the comedy Austin Alegero VDP - it finally gave up on me by catching fire whilst I was driving it, hateful thing it was too.

4 - Ford Mk2 Escort Van, 1.6 crossflow, taught me all I need to know about oversteer

1 - VW Golf GTi 16V Mk2, The love of my life (after the wife), owned it for 6 years and counting, definitely never for sale
The worst? A Mk4 Escort 1.6 Ghia Automatic. Absolutely awful in every way, bought it as an emergency stopgap after I wrote one of my many Golfs, the only good thing about it was I made £100 when I sold it

I've only owned 5 cars but I'd say the best is my current Mk6 Golf 2.0 TDI. It has leather seats, heated seats, sat nav etc, has had no mechanical problems or anything yet, gives 50 mpg normally, cheapish road tax, smooth and comfy, like a limo
.
I might say the worst was my '99 STI wagon, mainly because of dreadful fuel economy and the fact that the paint was so thin, a jet wash could make it flake. It was though fast and nice to drive, but was ugly as sin.

Best
1. Honda NSX - top handling, top braking. Quick, but not enough it just need more powerrrrr. Useless for roadtrips (tiny boot)
2. Monaro VXR - Best performance for your pound. Rapid, Good handling, so so brakes, useless in the wet (factory OE tyres not suitable for use in the UK). Huge, PITA to park and a more useless boot than the NSX.
3. Golf R32 3 door manual. Swiss army knife, so for me its the perfect everyday car I've ever owned: No turbo lag and No ****ty DSG bollocks to ruin it. Hatchback so CAN be used for road trips...spends most of its life with the seats folded carrying lawnmowers and crap. Suffers from gremlins though (mainly electrical).
4: MKV XR3i 130ps. Last and fastest of the XR3s .Yes it had gremlins and a ****ty gearbox, but it went, handled and stopped well. The only other hot hatch at the time that was more fun to drive IMO was a 306GTi-6, and they were stupid money.
5. VW MK2 Polo 1.3. Paid £250, spent £20 on cap and leads. Thrashed it to an inch of its life and it just took it. Scary handling, to the point it was comical. Looking back now I probably should not have been driving at 100+mph slip streaming my workmate's Vito.
Worst
1. Rover 216 SLI CVT auto. (my dad's company car...which I ended driving the most) **** car, **** gearbox, guzzled fuel and blew a head gasket. Handled ok. And I'd go through a set of front brake pads every 5000miles (un-vented solid front discs, drums rear, and not much engine braking
)
2. Rover 216 GSi auto...This one had a Honda engine. Still blew a head gasket. Guzzled more fuel and so f*king slow, handled like a barge...I sold it after I was out-dragged at some traffic lights by a Renault 19 1.4
3. BMW 325 SE touring. Good at everything, but not great at anything. Too slow, too uncomfortable, boot a awkward size, only handled OK with some weight in the boot. Guzzled fuel (worse MPG than the R32), and wasn't very quick either. Generally speaking, just very boring. A 320d would have been better as the six pot engine gave little advantage barring a nicer noise.
4. Vauxhall Frontera 2.0 Sport S. For some reason it was mandated we needed a off-road vehicle for site work. This one was the only thing other than a Suzuki that would fit the budget. In hindsight the Suzuki would have been better. Underpowered, is a understatement. On teh list of issues it had the most notable event was when it spat a spark plug out at 40,000miles. Overall just nasty in every way. My Polo had better street cred.
5. Citroen Berlingo 1.9 D (70bhp non-turbo ): This was my works van. I had it brand new with 4 miles on the clock. It was the slowest piece of **** I have ever driven. I could barely average 40mpg. Which taking into account our current BMW's mpg as a comparison makes it pretty abysmal. I recall Top Gear at the time acclaimed that the car version was the slowest accelerating vehicle in production. I could believe it.
I left the Imprezas out...it was pipped at 5th place because the Polo was more worthy, and the XR3 was more fun to drive (less understeer
).
Jag is left out as its a love/hate relationship and I live in fear of not upsetting it incase it punishes me by dumping its gearbox oil on the driveway (its the antichrist of Herbie)

I've never really had a daily driver that did much above 30mpg
Its not that bad IMO: It is more efficient than my Imprezas and the BMW 325, all of which have smaller engines. And its not much different to the MPG that the Monaro did either. Considering the Rover 216s (either of them) used to average 28mpg its positively brilliant on fuel.
I don't get people's obsession with road tax: its £280 (Band K ) from a grand perspective that works out at 76p a day, which even if it were in the higher bracket when compared to the road tolls across Europe its a bargain.
That's why you won't see me driving a A2 1.4 TDi (£30 ) or the £10 or whatever it is to tax a Prius

You've just broke rule one of fast(ish) cars...don't moan about the MPG or tax (or insurance):

I do get your point about the ultra-efficient cars though. I think you have to compromise a bit, a hair shirt isn't an easy thing to wear 24/7. It is for that reason I didn't get a 1.4? Golf (the 3 pot one) 'cos it felt just a bit too austere (underpowered and teh cheapest interior).
My experience is that one you get a 'fuel efficient' car (what's that exactly? Over 40-50 mpg?) it is very hard to go back to 20 mpg performance cars which you are constantly filling up. You start thinking about the money you are losing. One even gets a slight pslewis type feeling of smugness when you see battered classics cruising past guzzling their petrol lol.

1. Mazda RX7 - Fantastic RWD sideways action, never failed to give me a grin, even sat stationary in traffic.
2. Renault 5 GT Turbo Ph2 - Spent approx 20k on modifying it over a 10 year period. Don't regret it but it was lots and lots of fun
3. Renault 5 GT Turbo 5 ph1, original 50k miles in good condition and full Renault service history, totally regret selling that car to be honest.
4. Ford Cougar V6 - strange one this, I enjoyed owning this car, wasnt the fastest but thought it looked good, was very comfortable to drive and felt like an expensive vehicle compared to what it actually cost me.
5. VW Passat - Aka The Tank, I gave that car alot of abuse and it took everything I threw at it. Paid £900 for a full years MOT and Tax on it, sold it about 5 years later for £350. Never let me down.
Worse - Subaru Impreza Terzo - Totally overated IMO, sorry I know its a Subaru forum but I was looking forward to owning one of these cars and other than the sound the car didnt really impress me that much in all departments. Not a bad car overall but the disappointment made it the worse to own for me

1) MK1 golf Gti would be right up there, prob at number 1. Pretty nice having one at 18 anyway, but they really are awesome little cars. I used to give mine death, push it to the limit and it'd just slide in an easy to control manner. It wasn't short of its gremlins (mainly electrical even back then) and used to be slow as in the heat, on a crisp cold morning with nice dense, damp air it'd fly along. I used to sell it to a mate & buy it back, I owned it on 3 or 4 occasions. Probably still have it now if he hadn't written it off.
As for the other 4, not sure they warrant placing in any order.

Best
1 r32 gtr
Looks amazing, drives beautiful, rb26 engine what more
2 2003 blob Sti.
Fell in love with this car was reliable and was well modded , would still have it now if a tree didn't jump out on me.
3 wide arched Sti type
Loved this car was fantastic drive great and people looked at it everywhere you went. Recently sold that to a guy abroad
4 106 Rallye s1 abd s2
The first two cars I owned that made me use car forums and start to get the modding bug.
5 Clio v6
Not the best handling car
But sounded awesome and defiantly gave you that smile factor when driving about. Prettily reliable..
Worst cars
1Nissan pulsar
Horrible car in standard form just felt unsafe
2 300 bhp 106 gti turbo
Granted it wasn't standard. And it was insane to drive
But cost me thousands and broke every time I took it out

5. XJ6 4.2 Series 1 (with full length Webasto fabric sunroof)
Probably the best multi-function car (Sport Saloon/Grand Tourer/Cruiser/*******' Station/People carrier/Wedding Car) built in Britain to date.
4. Toyota MR2 Mk1 (nos. 1&4)
If Ferrari had built an entry level model they couldn’t have made a better one than this.
3. Subaru Impreza Turbo 2000 ClassicWagon
In rainy, waterlogged, wet Wales this innocuous, unassuming, non-shouty, plain-Jane meant: rain starts play. Every time.
2. Toyota MR2 Mk1 (no. 2)
How could a 1600cc, 130bhp ‘girl’s car’ have been the quickest thing from A to B? Superbly engineered. Best of the 4 Mk1 MR2s I’ve owned and enjoyed.
1. Golf GTi Mk1 1.8
Sublime, fun, forgiving! The best hot hatch ever. Ever.
Worst: 1974 Pontiac Firebird TransAm 455 HO (Fish mouth)
Time owned:9 months, Time on the road: 3 months.
It could lay rubber and smoke tyres on demand in most (of its 3) gears. But it was so unreliable that I actually walked away from the car for good the 5th time it broke down (head gasket) and left me stranded.
I still feel resentful because I was on my way to RAF Lyneham for a flight on a C-130K Hercules and was wearing my full Max Max Road Warrior outfit and looked an even bigger prat sat on the M4 hard shoulder next to this steaming lump of pig-iron!

Ok some of these are very sad, but I do tend to hold on to cars for quite a while
1. By miles and miles my Type-25
2. Dolomite Sprint
3. WRX Bug
4. 2.0lt Capri (Laser)
5. Mk2 Cortina

1. Impreza STI V3, 400+bhp. Great car with great spec, did everything right.
2. Citroen BX 1.9 16v. My first car. Looked like a shed but went like stink. Had some great fun in that car showing up the local boy racers. Also, being a citroen I could drop the suspension right down and cruise through town like a low rider..lol
3. Lancer GSR evo 3. Had this at 19, pretty standard. Very good car and easy to drive fast.
4. Citroen CX gti turbo 2. Heavily modified, looked like a space ship and went like one too. Got pulled by the fuzz at speed only to be asked if I'd mind them taking a minute to admire it.
5. Nissan pulsar GTI-R. Lovely little thing, poured my heart and soul into it only for it to be broken up by the chap I sold it to.
Worst car.
For Sierra Cosworth replica. Looked the part but was utterly awful to drive. Had a 1.8 cvh engine that knocked like ****. Bought it for a grand and sold it for a grand a few weeks later.
A close second was my impreza bug wagon non turbo. What a truly awful car they are. Slow as ****, ugly as sin and use fuel like a proper impreza. Totally pointless vehicle. That lasted a month

My 5 best is
S2000 feels like a tamed mini f1 car great fun to drive very refined. Well made and well engineered. Future classic 100% I reckon
350z felt good in it like I was driving a more premium brand. Fantastic cabin fun to drive
Supra tt 96 for speed and feel good factor . If was newer would of kept
Wrx blob great car not the best looking reliable
330d e46 just for being a good diesel
5 Worse
Alfa romeo gt 1.9jtd 05 loads of problems
Vauxhall astra convertible turbo 05 lots of problems but good for the money 1.8 more reliable
Ford cougar 2.5 rubish engine but good fore the money
Astra mk4 1.6 because of it being first car not the best I have had
E46 325 convertible.
Lovely looking cars . Exellent drive. Few problems crap performance should of bought 330
X type diesel would be my choice . For budget and cheapness to buy and run. If I wanted a diesel. 4 doors. And a decent performing car thats reliable and exellent mpg. All the goodies and premium badge would be jaguar x type 2.0d.

I've only owned five cars so far in my life excluding the wife's, should probably chop and change a bit more to be a true car nut. Anyway from worst to best:
5. Vauxhall Cavalier 1.6GL Hatchback MY92/3 - First car, should have bought something better for the money but a bit naive back then. It was unreliable from the outset, used to cut out randomly, especially useful on the motorway, traced to a dodgy distributor (remember them?). Crashed it. Blew an engine. Ultimately cost me a small fortune back then to keep it on the road. In fairness it kept me mobile for a fair time but was a truly horrible car.
4. VW Passat 1.8S 18V Saloon MY99 - Nothing wrong with it really, comfortable, reliable, but just a bit dull. Bought as a cheap stop gap after writing off the Scooby but ended up keeping it nearly 5 years so weren't that bad.
From the remaining three it's a tough choice, they've all quite similar in terms of how much I like them....
3. BMW 535d Touring E61/MY08 - My current car and I really love it for what it is now I'm a bit older, wiser, and have kids. The ability to transport lots of baby/toddler paraphernalia but still do a ~6 second 0-60 and with a phenomenal mid range and a good top speed (if I ever went on holiday to Germany). On top of that the toys and the comfort make it a great car but it's just not raw enough
2. BMW 325i 3 door salon E30/MY1989 - Loved this car and was proper rapid for a 24 year old. Reliable and fun to drive though a little scary at times due to how tail happy it was. Should have kept it for a track car when I bought the Scooby but circumstances at the time meant I had nowhere to store it.
1. Subaru Impreza Turbo 2000 MY00 - Say no more
Seemed mental when I first got it but soon got the bug and started doing some modifications. Nothing major, full de-cat exhaust, panel filter etc., absolutely loved that H&S exhaust on full chat. Gutted when I wrote it off due to aquaplaning on a particularly grotty night on the M40

5. Honda Integra Type R / VW Golf MK2 VR6 (couldn't decide between them)
Both just raw, N/A power plants that love to rev and sounded eminence, handling was spot on in both cars, the Golf was widetracked.
I just loved to drive these both on twisties and motorways.
4. Nissan Pulsar GTiR
With a full system, remap, coilovers and brake upgrade this thing weighed hardly anything and running 304BHP it just was a weapon and the launch was amazing it squatted its little bum down and off it went.
3 VW R32 Golf MKIV
A lovely place to be in with heated Konigs and full system non-res Miltek made this a great luxury, but quick car
2. BMW E46 M3 (Vert and Coupe)
M3 with full system and carbon airbox, a great focused car, with an lovely exhaust note from that silky smooth 6 pot.
1. Ford Sierra RS Cosworth
A 441 BHP Ahmed Bayjoo mapped and cammed with lots of other trick bits including genuine RS500 inter cooler and rad, with 6 pot air cooled AP brakes this thing was just a leathel RWD machine that loved to pop and bang, the turbo whine was unbelievable and the boost was just neck breaking, went like stink.
That was quite hard out of my 30+ cars in 13 years lol

1. 400bhp Evo 8
2. Nissan sunny GTIR stupidly rapid in straight line, shame about brakes but tarox 6 pot fixes that
3. Nissan Bluebird ZX turbo. My 2nd car rapid and left lots for dead in its time. Had all the electric toys as well
4. Meganesport Trophy no 473, not quick by any means but it stuck to the road like glue
5. WRX with power fc, small vf10 turbo was ok (close between the wrx and a 16v calibre)
