What has happened today is a tragedy, but it should not be used to further divide our country.

There will always, sadly, be very sick individuals out there willing to commit awful crimes against others, no matter what their faith, colour, religion etc. What we need not to lose sight of, is that they are vile people, and whatever they give as their 'excuse' or reason for their crimes, they are wired up wrong, simple as. Ultimately, if they hadn't have attached themselves to a religious cause, they may well have gone on to commit this awful act regardless, because they are not right.

Most people in this country are decent, and I'm sure most couldn't even imagine themselves capable of such a brutal act, let alone do it, that must tell us something.

Don't use this as an excuse to fuel hatred towards a whole section of our society, just hate the two evil, twisted people that did this. And show our respects to the person who lost his life today, along with the family he left behind.

Why are the edl covering their faces? Surely they are protesting to say make Britain how it used to be... Covering their faces can't help the situation.

Is it time to vote BNP

I blame Muslims.

It's about time something was done about us.

Just kick us all out of here and be done with it.

Some of the comments on this thread are beyond belief.

Sick people do sick things, these two demented individuals are not representatives of Islam, they are representatives of the world situation.

I blame world leaders for this, religious and political.

RIP.

Apologies mate, I shouldnt have been quick to get defensive. Just got sick of seeing so many uneducated idiots thinking they know whats best on how to run a country by the end of last night. Appears it carried on after I retired to bed too, such a shame.

Ditchmysters last comment is basically the bottom line here and how this terrible tradgedy should be treated. I'm proud of how humane my country is and how much of a free reign people are given. I might not think our streets are the best in the world but I feel I can walk in 90% of this land care free without worry at any time of day, which is more than can be said about many other countries around the world. Being tolerant is what seperates us from other nations

Just watched the news and while we have nutters attacking people with cleavers on the streets on one extreme and the knuckle dragging morons from the EDL on the other there isn't much hope for the country is there

The EDL aren't extremists. They're a bit of an embarrassment, but they're not 'extreme' by any stretch of the imagination.

If religion didn't exist men would still be killing each other; over oil or land or diamonds.

Nutters are nutters whatever their colour or faith.

Agree and disagree, when I say extremists, their views are extreme based against the average tolerant Briton. Completely misguided fools. Again, a small majority of them do go around causing trouble, I'm please last nights events were not given so much publicity by the bbc. But I have heard bricks and bottles were being chucked at police etc again last night. This isnt a one off. People arrested for unrest in Cardiff last night too.

lol don't you start

Example, only 250 mindless idiots turned up in Woolwich last night wearing balaclavas trying to cause a scene, whilst the majority of Britain sat at home in shock and wonder of what happened being rational.

Their views could be that its extreme to keep spouting "kick em out" "send them back to where they came from"

Guess its where you draw the line of how we distinguish the word extreme. To me its anything that can be said to be over the top.

So in this instance it's the way they chose to express their outrage that you consider extreme. I would say it's juvenile and unhelpful and undignified, but not extreme.

Would you say that objecting to Islamic Jihadism is extreme? Is that "over the top"?

Not at all, I agree with your comments about how they express their outrage. But its their opinions in general (before any of yesterdays events happened) that I class as extreme. You could have stopped any of them clowns last night and asked what theyre protesting about and you'll be lucky to get an answer that makes any kind of sense. Like I said, something as simple as the view "Kick them out" is extreme in my opinion. Its an extreme measure by labelling every foreigner as "them" and asking (kicking them out actually) for "them" to leave. Half of what makes this country Great is the contribution we have from multiple nations and our exploration of the world accepting different cultures rather than living on our own little island and building a wall around it.

Remember, these people are popping out kids and this country will be FULL of extremists one day!

If Muslims or any other race/religion wants to live by Islamic law, the should be deported to a country that rules by Islamic law.

You should read Enoch Powells "Rivers of Blood" speech!

Im not saying something should not be done about Islamic extremists. If theyre known to us then by all means they should be dealt with in an appropriate manner. Unfortunately not all are as easily identifiable than those who march through our streets, if so things like yesterday could be avoided - but they can't and therefore will always happen unfortunately.

I am a strong believer than any living person (who has not done something illegal to a degree) should be able to reside in any corner of the earth in peace. (Thats before we discuss further topics such as benefits). We as Brits are lucky we can go most places without having tight regulations against us. Despite what people think we dont let any Tom Dick or Harry into the place for a 2 week vacation

How many references were made to Islamic extremism in his speech?

Because you'd have approached two men covered in blood who'd just hacked a blokes head off with the weapons they used still in their hands and taken them on on your own right?

I'm sorry mate but you're spouting sh*te.

Had you been there you'd have probably been in shock and not known what on earth to do.

There's no way you'd have taken them on if you were one of the people there.

Im ex forces (Royal Marines) and like to think I can look after myself but I know I probably wouldnt have approached these two nutters. Especially if they were armed and I wasn't.

I agree with the second part of your post; I'm only intolerant of intolerant ideologies. However, I do think you're confusing ingnorance and extremism. Is there a statement or something of that nature from the EDL website that would support your view that they want foreigners or even Muslims "kicked-out"?

Here's a statement I found from their site:

http://englishdefenceleague.org/edl-...-we-are-at-war

Is this the kind of thing?

Why don't you have a read instead of asking?

It ruined him because 40+ years ago it was controversial and to some, still is but it is ringing very true today.
