Tut, tut, tut, As per usual, "the plot thickens" sounds like this pair should get married, "the perfect couple".

This is is an interesting thread and begs the question, why didn't you get the car inspected by the AA, RAC or a competent mechanic prior to doing the deal if you don't know much about mechanics? Such an inspection would cost you £200 to £300 but would have revealed any problems with the car, which you could have used to negotiate the price downwards, if you still wanted to proceed with the purchase.

Personally I think it rather naive to rely on a seller's description of a vehicle, as in my experience the majority are always going to be economical with the truth or at best are genuinely not going to know about problems that the car may have.

We can bang on about morals 'til the cows come home but it strikes me that this is a case of 6 of one and half a dozen of the other!

Cheers,

Yes, a case of buyer and seller beware, if such a thing exists.

I have noticed one other thing since the thread started however.
Only one of the parties has continued the debate, despite getting 'bad press'. They've contributed to, as you say, an interesting thread and I think something's been learned.

One has been prepared to say their piece, listen to others, give a response and learn a little while the OP - who's in much the same position - seems to have run away from it all.

Seems to me that there's been a reversal of roles at the end of all this.

I've found being honest about the issues a car may have, does not necessarily mean nobody will be interested.
Sold a civic with the engine management light coming on, and absolutely buggered tyres. Someone still wanted it, the first guy that came to see it. Took it there and then and told me he was taking it to Malta!
Sold my mr2 as an MOT failure and needing more work than Toyota though was worth even quoting me for. I'd showed the guy the failure print out, but he was a mechanic so wasn't bothered. Got a stunning looking car with 16" alloys and tyres for £400.

I havent run away??? i hadnt logged in a while :S

whilst i will maintain the fact i did tell you about the clutch slipping in higher gears and you took it for a drive around and battled me down on the price anyway, it was more the fact that you let me drive 100 odd miles home on dodgy brakes when you saw i had kids in the car??... anyway its by the by now. i've only ever bought from garages before and i suppose you learn from your mistakes. she's perfect now so i have what i wanted. Good luck in your quest for another scoob Chris, now i have one i wouldnt go back.

oh and a quick note... they did not seize a few months after purchasing.... one of the pads was wedged so far into the calliper in such a fashion they had to send the calliper off with the pad still in it to be removed and reconditioned.... and the other one had pins that weren't put back properly, had been forced and bent when the brake had been used and the pad was about to fall out.. whilst it was sat in a garage after the accident the pins in the callipers seized because they were jammed back in. you told me when i bought it that you had had a oil change, fully synthetic and the right grade... but when i did an oil change the oil that came out was like water.... it had an idling problem once warm, i ended spending a lot of money on the car when i would have had no idea without removing the wheels at the roadside that it had the problems! i did state about the clutch, the car was worth at least 6500 to 7000, why would i have done a direct swap with a small amount of money on the top for a car worth 5000 at the most? also you bragged on your facebook afterwards that you managed to get rid of it and get a car worth a lot more and that i was some stupid chav girl?? you obviously knew about the issues. anyway... by the by...

Couple of questions:

1/ Did you take it for a test drive prior to concluding the deal and if so, how did it drive and stop?

2/ You say the oil was like water. Was it clear or was it black?

Yes i did, however having never driven a 4 wheel drive i guess i wouldn't have known the front brakes weren't working... the back brakes have been fine. again my mistake for not checking... and yes the oil was black but was the consistency of water... literally.

the point was more that he had lied not that it had the problems in the first place. yes i should have checked but i didnt. i was honest about my car. i know i was. if i hadnt been why would i come and broadcast it on the internet. if i had decidedly lied about mine id have kept quiet about the whole clutch issue and claimed innocence that i knew nothing about it surely??

With all due respect mate, you would have known if the front brakes were not working properly during the test drive as the bias is set towards the front brakes even on 4 wheel drive and surely everyone checks the engine oil dipstick when going to buy a car, don't they?!

Please take someone mechanically minded with you when you buy your next car, if buying privately without a warranty!

Cheers,

Well lets put it down to experience. The car is now sorted, i will not be selling it anytime soon. I totally agree that partially it is my fault for not checking it properly :S Next time il know not to be so trusting!! x

Like tennis this isn't it?

I'd have thought that as the OP you'd have kept an eye on the thread but again that's bye-the-bye and good experience with no harm done.
Fwiw your comments have redressed the balance in my view.

I'm glad you're happy now things are sorted and you will enjoy it. Kept properly it won't cost greatly because you'll get far more years than it drops in price, if you see what I mean.

3 or 4 years with only MoT expenses and you'll still have a lot of your original investment left in the car.

Happy scoobying.

haha - well you should have seen the nightmare i face when i got my blob WRX - to be fair though i only technically payed £60 for the car - BUT the fact is pretty much everything in the engine was loose, the car was modded alot without a remap, so i think i have spent around the £800 mark to get it where it is today

I think there's another moral to this thread.
Once a Subaru's bought get it looked over, and include that in the budget.

Saves one a lot of bother, either while the car's owned by you or after selling.

Btw if anyone's noticed, 'I'm about to buy a scooby' threads are very common on here.
Also worth starting one so you get the right questions to ask etc. if anyone's ever in this situation.
