Thinking about starting cycling ?
Mountain biking is OK if there is a local trail......but having to stick it on the back of the car and go places justs adds extra time. Off road is better with an engine!
With a road bike I'm good to go when I lock my garage.

I bought a road bike last year and have gone from a 20mile ride at 15mph tiring me out to being able to do 70miles at 17mph. I have also spent a fortune on Lycra and shiney bits for the bike. However, I am fitter than ever and have lost almost 2 stone
As for road cycling being boring, get Strava on either your smartphone or GPS bike computer. It makes things more interesting, especially if you have a little competitive streak

Strava is mint
Just got myself an MTB to have some fun and get back in shape, not the most knowledgable about theses things but it seems to have some nice parts and should do the job.

I do a bit of mountain biking myself, nothing too heavy or serious.
I prefer riding a mountain bike as the places you will ride are far more interesting than what you see on a main road plus you don't have to put up with some of the *** heads you get on the roads that don't give 2 hoots about cyclists.
I ride mainly towpaths, i enjoy it as its a great way to keep fit plus you get to see a bit of decent scenery.

I've recently started getting out on my MTB too. Thought I was going to die after doing a couple of miles the first time out.
It's a new bike and I haven't been on one for years, plus the fact I never do any exercise doesn't help matters. At work, if I’m in the office am sitting at a desk all day then come home and don’t do a lot so thought I better get more mobile and find something I don’t mind doing but includes some exercise – MTB seemed a good idea, plus I’m quite lucky in that I have a lot of woodlands all around where I live.
I have also been playing with Mapmyride on my mobile – it tracks quite well, although the calorie count doesn’t always work (if you want to look at that type of thing). I done 6 miles and it said I burnt 1 calorie! Lol
One question – for burning calories/lose some weight etc, would it be better to do more off road riding, where you will probably be working harder (up hills etc) but the distance will generally be shorter, or, more road riding where you ride at a quicker pace/cover more ground but possibly not ‘working’ as hard?

Most of my weight is supported on the pedals and bars not the seat. I think a 30 mile round commute to work would be a killer jogging
That's how I do it. According to Strava, I burn about 600cals/hour. On a hilly ride, that will be much more but as I don't monitor heart rate, it's difficult to quantify.
Put it another way, I've lost night on 2 Stones since I started cycling and I eat more as I am always hungry!

I'll wander through if I may....
Commute into work last year...
18 miles of pure relaxation
and part of a 100Km route I like to run on one of my CX bikes:
(actually the swan song for the Tricross, it got retired for a new Felt after this ride)
Get a bike, make it a good one... that way you'll keep doing it.
