Personally for the 20k mark, i would keep saving and do things proper - get a GTR!
no way would i consider a 20k mark and feel no difference from a 5k scooby!
for me next i would defo be looking towards a Mustang GT or GTR

Lol their is some crap being churned on here. Firstly the interiors - if you can sit in a RS with the half leather recaro's and tell me the interior of even the latest WRX STi hatch is on a par let alone better then you are deluded or need to go to specsavers. The thing I dont like about the RS is the two tone dark & light grey plastic trim as the lighter looks cheaper - would have been better all dark grey. The faux carbon fibre trim is a tiny amount surrounding the gearstick. Sure the RS is no german car but lets not pretend that the scooby is anything less than agricultural. I test drove 4 of them and had my heart set on one before deciding on an RS!
The OP was not comparing the RS to an RB320 - it was against an STi Hatch & Evo X. The RB and Makinnen etc are all far smaller production numbers than the RS MK2 yet the latter stands up to most in terms of depreciation. As others have said there are quite a few on the road which makes the strong 2nd hand prices even more impressive. Yes you will pay more to purchase but it will hold its value. The top of the range RS500 was £35k and those are going for that money and more 2 years later even though they only got an MP350 power upgrade, a matt black wrap, red recaros and a few additional bits not worth mentioning.
Yes the traction is poor in the wet especially if your running the orginal Continental Contisport 3 tyres. On Eagle F1's or Supersports with an aftermarket torque mount it improves a lot. Once moving there is no issue. If your main interest is driving flat out in the wet and / or traffic light GP's then yes the RS is probably not for you.
As for the new RS affecting MK2 prices - we don't even know 100% there will be one yet so that is speculating somewhat. If it does it is highly likely to be based on the ST 2.0 4cyl Ecoboost engine which is not exactly setting the world on fire either with looks or engine character so I have my reservations. Did the MK2 affect MK1 prices when it came out? Serious question as I don't know but I would find it unlikely.

As I was in the market for a MK1, but saw the new Mk2 at the motor show and changed my mind immediately and waited for the new one, the Mk1 only dropped by £2k at the very most. High end models such as low milers, standard brill condition stayed the same or rose slightly.

I had the green and thought it was the best colour before i bought it, if i had one again it would be the white or blue, probably the blue with black wheels look the best imho.
Saying that i dont think there worth the price they command, they are a good car but some of the parts are incredibly cheap looking / feeling and it soon puts a downer on a 20k motor.

One of my mates has a 440bhp Mk2 RS it is boost limited in 1st and 2nd but once moving it sounds and goes like **** of a shovel. The interior is 10x better than my P1 but it is no Impreza.

Tbh Ash I see more focus rs mk1 & mk2 by me than any scoobs and that's no lie, I can count on 1 hand the amount of scoobs I see compare to the focus rs, but then again its a bit hard to miss a bright green one I suppose by me I have within a 1 mile radius approx 3 green ones, 1 mat black one, 2 white ones and that's what I've seen, they are starting to pop up more often around the place.
I like the focus mind that 5 pot makes a hell of a grumble, and my mates mk1 rs is a flyer as well in all fairness but as said only when you get the power down but its certainly entertaining and the idiots who watch on think its great seeing it wheel spinning everywhere, " durrrr that's got some power, look at it spin" but when it does catch grip its gone........
Would I buy one, quite possibly just to say I've had one, but as a keeper I'm not so sure, it would do my head in having the power there but not being able to use it, and constantly ripping my tyres to pieces

And if you ever did buy one, youd be hooked lol if you sold it, youd want another! have a test drive in one
Hit the nail on the head there mate.
Went in a 420bhp Mk2 Focus RS not long back, and I was very impressed with it, That impressed that I was thinking of buying one(looked round Focus direct). But then when I sat down and really thought about it, To get a nice one you are looking at £20k. Like you say the brake calipers are not exactly up to sratch, paying £20k for a car you want some nice looking brakes(brembos etc) and you dont get that limited edition feel like the early mk1 Focus RS, the Mk2 seem to be on every corner, I see plenty of them on my daily travels!! And when you really think about it, It is really a modded Focus ST underneath!!
I do like them and think there great cars, But I couldnt shell out £20k for one at the moment, maybe when they have dropped a bit more and you can pick them up for less then £15k then I could justify one!!!

The RS lump is just a modified ST lump, however, Ford realised the cylinder liners were cak on ST's so fitted the RS with steel ones. Not uncommon for the liners to go on standard 2.5st lumps. Modified St owners live in fear on a daily basis hoping that there liners hold out, hence why companies offer a service to have them plasma-lined. Although I've heard this is considered more a gimmick by some???
It's still a focus though!!

I do think they are worth the money though, the grin on your face when driving one, not much that does the same for similar money....

I had 3 scoobs, the last two being sti ppp's. Sold up 5 years ago and had bought a diesel Leon Fr170. Decided recently wanted a little a more power and tested a few cars including two Focus RS, Audi TTS, Impreza and a Cupra R. Went for an 11plate Cupra R which had 4800 miles on it for £16k. Its got all the goodies,it's performance will match any of the above and still manages to return on average 30mpg.

Decent MPG was not something I was looking for when buying but I have averaged 26 in the RS and thats with a start / stop commute of 8 miles that barely gets above 40mph. I dont spend much time on motorways but if I did I am sure my average would not be far off 30mpg either. My Civic Type R (FN2) only managed 28mpg over 25k miles. I put that down to the lack of torque meaning you had to drive at 3k rpm or above to get anywhere.

P1, I'd probably be one those that came up to you and harked back to the days when I owned a MK2 RS2000 custom, and a greatcar it was too. I like the Focus RS but there was just something about the ride that just didn't seem right to me, maybe i was just having one of those days. Still I'm more then happy with my Cupra R as you are with the RS. As you said. Each to their own I guess.

Is it impressive, and fooking rapid once it gets going, but as much as i love the Rs, i agree it is a bit much for FWD....
