The Pope is important to anyone who follows the Catholic religion and surprisingly significant to the rest of the world as we have seen.

If you are not religious or follow a different religion, why not just leave it at that!

Those who feel they are forced to comment at all must feel that he plays an important part in the world order!

I'm Catholic and coulden't give a flying **** either way TBH Les.
This new one is 76, why do they always elect someone who is almost dead and must struggle to make a rational decision considering the role he is in? My Grandfathers 81 and we don't even let him do the shopping anymore.

Why do you ALWAYS jump on the defensive bandwagon when anyone has even a slight pop at religion or people's religious beliefs.

We all know that it's 'each to their own' etc but because it is dwindling to such an extent in the UK (our local church hardly has 10 people on a Sunday now, and when I was a kid it was 200). The Sunday school has closed, as has the bible class. The boys brigade is no more and at least the church I attended (was forced to attend) hasn't been embroiled in sordid scandal after scandal.

No wonder folk dismiss it and quite right IMHO

Defend all you like Les, but stop taking it so personally, nobody is attacking YOU, just a 'dying make believe thing', a bit like Santa

Les is quite right off course

Coincidently, as the Pope was announced, my youngest daughter was filled with wonder by a youtube video showing the relative sizes of celestial bodies in the universe – starting with mercury and ending up with an unimaginably large red giant star.

She was so proud to show me this, and to talk me through how small the earth is, how large the universe is – I thought “wow she has a better grasp of what it is to be human, and shows more relevance to humanity than the Pope”

She is 6 years old

If as a country we were more religious, as in the past, then there would probably be a better work ethic and in general more respect and better behaviour on the whole.
I'm with Leslie on this one, Christianity or Islam in moderation are probably a good thing, extremism in either is not.

Absolutely, in the same way only a small number of Catholic priests are kiddie-diddlers ( although the hype suggests most are and has also by association spread to the church in general) only a very small number of Muslims are terrorists.
I can respect practising Christians or Muslims, you only have to watch 'The Big Questions' on Sundays to see that many Christians and Muslims put forward very reasonable arguments or opinions.
