new MGs - what the smeg?

Really, Really chuffed to bits that MG/Rover are making a SUCCESS of the business. When BMW raped it of its core business, that being Land Rover and all the R&D that went into the new Mini i thought it was dead.
I swore then i would never buy or run a BMW and when the time came last November and i had to have a new company car BMW and sell my Subaru, i opted out of the car scheme and bought the scoob. That was partly down to the new tax situation, but also down to not wanting a BMW.
MG/Rover are doing fantastic at rebuilding a brand from the absolute depths. They are using motorsport to improve its image and making road going versions to reflect this. This is EXACTLY what Subaru did when they started their partnership with Prodrive running the Legacy and them most significantly the Impreza in WRC. Prior to this Subaru were a farmers choice, no one took a second look at the cars, especially if they were interested in performance driving.
The amount of hypocrits on here is amazing, so many of you have no knowledge of history or any concept of a business doing what is required to be successful.
MG/Rover are much more active in motorsport than Subaru. They have a factory backed entry in the WRC with Gwyndaff Evans in the Super 1600's. They have the LeMans and FIA sportcar series MG Prototype, They have a works team in the BTCC.
MG/Rover are turning that business around and saving thousands of Jobs in the UK as a result. I think that is brilliant for US.
As to the driving, i have seen plenty of ***** driving Impreza's, it has nothing to do with the car, its the toss pot behind the wheel.

What are people really cross about in this thread?
Most of us have Scoobs because, price/performance wise it was the best value sports car on the road. Twenty-ish grand gets you 215 bhp, four wheel drive and a great engine sound.
But what do Ferrari or Porsche drivers think of us when we pull up at the lights?
The new MGs offer a pretty well sorted body style, 160bhp and a great deal of street cred for sixteen grand....not bad IMO and there is definitely a market for it, just look at how many Rover have sold!!!
So what if it's a 're-badged' Rover 25/45/75.?...they look bloody cool and they come with sorted suspension and brakes, cool looking 17" alloys as standard, smart twin headlights and a lot of oomph....I'll have to spend another two grand getting my scoob sorted to that extent.....maybe Subaru should be taking some marketing lessons from Rover/MG?
I bought my wife an MGF last year....apparently the 'real' sportscar that some people think MG should be producing. It's very pretty, quite fast, a lot of fun if you sling it around, being mid-engined and rear wheel drive, but probably not a patch on the MR2 or MX5, and certainly nowhere near a Porsche Boxster...
My wife loves it though and this is the main point...people have different tastes and they are not sad, twa*s or w*nkers just 'cos they don't drive a Scoob.

Thanks for the correction - tomcat - actually came back to me at the weekend when I saw one out and about...
sadly rover have just reported they expect to lose £200 million over the year - but reckon that they will start replacing models through their brilliance partnership by 2004.
Regardless of the whole discussion here - I hope they can come back to profitability and develop their xpower products
