Look, you should meet whoever you can manage to meet from here. These stuck up people only act holier than thou on the internet. In real life, I bet each and every of them have done selfish things and harmed someone, somehow; somewhere. Therefore, don't hesitate to meet anyone whoever is available.

About smoking, what it is that smoking isn't like eating meat in front of vegetarian hippies. Passive smoking is bad for the passengers, so the smoker car owner/driver can provide sensitivity to this issue rather than acting 'stuck up' for his/her smoking like 'I will, because I want to, because it is my car, and you can get out of the car if you don't like'.

But then again, you may prefer sticking to your thought, and that is cool. Your passengers can also decide not to travel with you, if they have half of their head with some other mean of transport. I reckon this is a peaceful way of dealing with it.
