I've been pondering about buying an ipad for over a month now! I am finding it difficult seeing the value in one over a laptop, especially when you can get a very well specced laptop for the price of an ipad. Still none the wiser but will need to buy something soon.

Consider more than spec when buying. Bigger numbers aren't always best.

Used to have a desktop and laptop. Now have desktop and iPad. Laptop hasn't been used (or even felt the need to use it) for over two years.

Would be different if I needed to do lots of work, then a laptop over the iPad, easy. But iPad is used for most stuff that is output: surfing, vids, music etc.

Would you use the laptop for gaming?
If not, a £180 netbook will be perfect for web browsing.
We have had one for nearly 3 years and it has been perfect. Slightly bigger screen that the iPad and you get a keyboard! Plus the battery lasts a good 8 hours before needing a re-charge.

I'm seriously struggling to justify replacing it with a tablet.

Why? Just to follow the crowd like you dear boy?

If used msinly as a net browser, they are fantastic.
If you think they are '****' as you put it, that's fine. I wouldn't expect you think any different and I am not trying to convince you to move away from Apple. In fact, I don't remember asking for your opinion on the matter in the first place.

What about the MS Surface RT? Tablets are less cumbersome when pinching one out on the bog.

You really don't get it, you followed the crowd and bought a netbook, they were a fad and a **** one. We forgive you, now pony up and get something more comfortable on the bog.

And how is tablet more comfortable than a laptop when sitting on the bog?

I think I'd still lean towards Apple for tablet choice. As much as I dislike iOS, with a tablet it would be all about the apps for me. The problem with Android is still audio latency, on my Nexus 4 it reports I'm getting 80ms of latency which is far too much for there to be any decent audio apps. I don't care about this for my phone, but it would matter on a tablet. If the only thing that interested me was web browsing and playing the odd game then I'd probably go for the Nexus 7 as it's cheap and will do a good job of that. I'd also prefer a tablet to a netbook for browsing. I bought the gf a Samsung NC10 ages ago for this and I hate using it. The battery is poor compared to a good tablet and the screen is too small. I know the screen on a tablet would be the same size or smaller, but being able to pinch to zoom and swipe the page around is much easier than using a touchpad and keyboard shortcuts.

Is that bluetooth audio latency?

Android 4.2.2 has just been released which apparently addresses some bluetooth audio issues; I don't use BT audio so can't tell if it's made a difference, but it may be relevant to you.

It's the audio latency with apps that I'm on about. Fine for games and stuff, but not for music type apps. There is noticeable latency from when you press something to when you here the sound. I updated to 4.2.2 this morning, not noticed any differences yet. I don't use bluetooth either.

Music apps on the iPad are pretty much amazing. Figure was updated this week so had that out for a play again, just stunning for a few quid.

So the latest news is that the ipad mini 2 is not going to be released until October along with a 30% price hike.

Still haven't decided. Had a play with iPad, iPad Mini and a Nexus 7 on Sunday.

Compared to the Nexus 7, the larger screen on the iPad is nicer to work with but the screen quality was considerably worse. The full size iPad was too big in my opinion. I was quite surprised with the Nexus in that I didn't find the screen too small and the HD display really was impressive.

So if the Mini 2 isn't going to be released until October and with a price hike to boot (seems a bit pointless if they are trying to compete with the Nexus 7 ), looks like it's the Nexus 7.

Really? Please show me where I have said that exactly? Besides, if apple's can now be hacked, that's even less of a reason to get one.
