Two different firmware files are used when using ota and itunes

You'd be surprised how many do ota over itunes

 

I haven't had any connection issues but I have experienced the over heating and very fast battery drain when it happens, its not consistent or persistent, maybe three times since I uploaded the latest. I have a 4S.

OTA update on my phone and iPad. 43% battery, still on 3G.

 

Possibly provider specific branding?

I know with my previous phones that debranding them made them work better, although I'm not exactly sure if a vodafone provided iphone has anything any different to one provided by any other carrier.

 

Actually, no, most won't be updating via iTunes, they will be using the OTA method on the phone.

Prior to iOS 5, users HAD to upgrade via iTunes (oh, ok, Xcode too if you're that way inclined). Anyway, there was no little badge on the settings app making people wonder what it was, nor messages saying there is a new OS update available. The only time they would see a message is if they connected their device to iTunes, and it would then usually tell them there is an update.

We had quite a battle to get management to allow us to drop support for pre iOS 5 users. The problem was that even when iOS 5 came out, there were a LOT of users still on iOS 4, and we are pretty positive this was due to the old way of doing things, ie; through iTunes.

Eventually we managed to convince them that iOS 5 was the way forward, there were I believe certain functions we wanted / needed to implement that required iOS 5 only system calls. Once we made the decision we started to inform people the next release would require iOS 5, and so people should update.

Now we are supporting iOS 5 and 6, we find that people do upgrade to the newer os versions, where possible, pretty quickly. Looking at the stats from the launch of 6.1 until last Friday, it seems that 34% of our users are on 6.1, and 36 on iOS 6.0.1, next up is 5.1.1 on 13%, the remainder is made up of different versions of 6, 5 and 4 (seems some users are still running on iOS 4 - must be on pretty old versions of the apps!)

Before the OTA upgrade, as mentioned above, we didn't see anywhere near that uptake.

The reason? Probably because users did not know they could upgrade the OS, now they are being informed they are doing it more frequently.

As for problems with OTA, I have a couple of devices at work on iOS 6.0.1 that have a few odd quirks and they have been upgraded via OTA. Other devices, same spec of device, have had full restores done on them and don't have any issues. One of the current problematic devices is 6.1 and will be getting a full restore when I have the time which I'm hoping may clear up the odd problems.
As for the problems, seems to have an issue with wifi, it's on, but seems very slow, and prior to 6.1 it was fine.

 

Just to add I have updated my IPAD 2 (Wi-fi only) via Itunes from 5.1 to 6.1 and for the last 2 days its been fine. I think in some cases better than ver. 5.1 as I tend to get better Battery life. No issues with the safari browser either.

 

I've upgraded my iPad 2 and iPhone 4S via OTA method and no issues with either, I'm with Vodafone on my phone too.

 

Swift response from Apple. I do hope the hate brigade on this thread are taking as much note of the solution as they did the issue. Apple have set the bar for issue resolution and it's already higher than Android can physically jump.

Both me and the mrs have ip4 both updated to 6.1 on the phone not via itunes, mines fine and now jb, hers is not and is showing quirks, so will get a full restore, it keeps bringing up the turn off slider, and the lock button doesnt work after the update,

keep saying i wont update but always do then regret it!!!

 

Yep, wished I kept the iPhone 4 on 5.1.1 instead of 6.1. No possibility of going back.

 

i was lucky i had ssh blobs saved for 5.1 on cydia so can always go back if it annoys me so much

why apple have to have such a tight leash over us i dont know, jailbreaking makes it customisable and would sell more phones.

 

One thing that doesn't work in IOS6 and above is the 'Backgrounder' app which you can get on Cydia.
IOS 6.1.1 is now available apparrently? And Vodaphone urges users to upgrade to 6.1.1 from 6.1;

It's the return of the lock screen magic trick. Not great, but the good news is Apple will fix it rather than ignore it for months like Samsung.

That being said qc dept cannot be that good, I mean its not as though they have loads of different devices to test it on, and the devices it does run on are made by themselves

Don't be shocked. All software has bugs, it's how you react to them that counts.

 

The fact that its the RETURN that is the real problem. Shows a lack of "learning the lessons"....

Aweful and woeful, how the hell could they allow this issue to crop up again. Its things like this that stopped me from even looking at the iphone in first place. Nice job Apple.

I love apple products, but cannot afford to buy everything I would like so make do with what I have/had* Iphone 4 and Ipad 2.

* Ipad 2 yet to be replaced as some scumbag stole it, but hayhoo it will be replaced with yet another iPad as I like they way it operates.

Back to subject.

I relaised that a few issues were as I would describe, a look-up issue. The keyboard although the formatting was right did not understand that the shortcuts were current, however after some tweaking its now working fine. My 3G and Wifi is now perfect, no alterations made to this set up. So I am prettty much as I was on IOS 6.0.

I use android because its better and nicer to use than IOS imo. Simple enough to understand.

 

Rather than being flippant you could admit that Apple dropped the ball on this, a problem that you could excuse the first time, but to repeat it...? Why not just say that you are disappointed that a professional company made an amateur mistake?

 

Have to agree. Admitting that Apple aren't perfect will mean that future posts made supporting them will hold a lot more weight.
