Funny that neither have I but I've been called a muppet and a loud mouth just because I don't feel the need to shell out a grand to travel on my 3 mile a day commute on snow and ice free roads.

Easiest thing for the law to do would be to adopt the stance taken by German and other European countries - fine people if they get stuck and are driving without winter tyres.

The biggest problem in this country are the muppets who drive on summer tyres at the same speed they do at the rest of the time of the year.
I can have AWD, winter tyres, but it's not going to protect me against some inconsiderate arsehole who refuses to realise that standard summer tyres become inefficient under 8 degrees Celsius and start losing grip.

My other half shares a horse near Fleet and it's at a farm on the end of an icy track.
If you're on summer tyres you won't make it - regardless of bravado, there was a woman in a Mistsubishi land cruiser who won't go down the track because she got stuck down the end last year.
The scoob - on winters - down the road and back no problem and can brake on sheet ice. Try that in your summer tyres - you won't stop and you'll crash.
For the sake of £200 odd it's a worthwhile investment.

I know many are very tight about spending money on the cars, but if you own a scoob and can't afford £200 you bought the wrong car IMHO.

I didn't know about winter tyres when I had my old WRX, until I slid on some ice at 8mph (yes really) into a kerb. No matter how much I tried to brake / power out / turn the car went straight. Did about £1000 of damage.
To me, that's reason enough to buy a set. But the know it all's will doubtless disagree because "they've never had a problem..."

 

My neighbour has a BMW 318 and got hopelessly stuck in the snow back in 2010. However, he bought winters and now drives happily to and from work and back into our estate (all the roads on our estate aren't gritted, are sheet ice and compacted as the council haven't adopted them).

The same can't be said for all the other cars who're parking on the main road temporarily until the snow melts because they can't even get out of their own cul-de-sacs.

 

....but you still could have slid and done damage on winter tyres. You may have been travelling even faster than 8mph as you had winter tyres on. You may have stopped....who knows.

 

At least they are not trying to drive...and they save £400.

Errr. I do. I have to ask - have you actually ever driven a car with winter tyres fitted or are all of your comments based on supposition? Because it sounds like the latter to me.

To answer your question, I did some tests to see what they were like when I bought them. I can slam the brakes on some sheet ice at 20mph and the car will stop - admittedly not as quick as in the summer, but it will still stop.
On summer tyres - no fookin chance you'll slide and carry on sliding. Good luck with that.

 

They are trying to drive - very dangerously as they slide all over the shop - especially the tools in RWD cars with summer tyres on.

Your comment re £400 is nonsense.
Winter tyres come in budget form too, which is what many motorists run.
I only run budget winters as I don't feel the need to go hooning about at 90mph in this weather like a *****.
My tyres cost me £200 fitted 3 years ago. £240 fitted now from my local tyre shop.
My neighbour is the buyer for a local tyre distributor and says they're selling them by the bucket load at the moment.
Hardly £400....

Just like having 5mm of tread is better than 2mm. Are you going to ask people to change tyres at 5mm? You would probably see similar performance increases in the rain.

Just as an aside I put it to all the Winter tyre supporters that my Michelin Summer tyres will give more performance between 0 and the magic 7 degrees than a set of budget Winter tyres (which are what most will be running).

And don't come out with any flannel about snow or ice, because I readily accept Summer tyres are not good in that case.

Folk on here talk about not driving at silly speeds in winter.
But if you're heading onto a motorway, you're going to be around the 70mph mark surely.

None here... I've worked everyday in it aswell, stuck to the main roads in London and they have all been clear and well gritted

I've noticed a few times lately on single carraigeway roads that when closing in on another vehicle at a significantly higher speed, that some of them have actually slowed down as I approached. A lot of people seem incredibly nervous when driving. As somebody who finds driving without some speed incredibly tedious, I still can't get to grips with how slow everybody drives.

Truth is, you'd rather avoid addressing the question.

No the truth is I'd rather not consider those stupid enough to buy budget tyres winter or summer. Like Ali was talking abiut earlier in the thread I cannot understand anyone buying budget tyres full stop.

Arguably tyres are the most important part of any car as they are the only bit that are in contact with the road and have the greatest effect on the safety of the vehicle.

It's like when people spend thousands on their car and then skimp on tyres to save a couple of hundred quid at most. It's moronic!

 

Yep, below 7 degrees I believe which until the last week, was way below the average lowest temperature!

Colder now but it won't last long.

My Contis outperformed a load of Winter tyres for wet weather braking in a big Evo tyre test. They were obviously worse in snow but seeing as we've had none...

Luckily we have a Landcruiser and a Defender we can borrow.
