Winter Tyres .......

..... a legal requirement.

I see it is being suggested that winter tyres are to be made mandatory.

With big fines if you do not fit them by third week in October.

But what if it doesn't snow? Then surely you're driving an unsafe car?

richs2891 19 January 2013 06:00 PM

Where has this been suggested ?

So how would it work with say my Shogun which it fitted it AT tyres and are not snow tyres or winter tyres but are absolutely brilliant on snow and slush and cold weather ?.
Unlike my BMW which is sat cowering in the garage as its next to useless in snow or slush - its going to get swapped soon for another Audi with quattro !

Winter tyres work just fine in dry weather as well as wet and snow, they just don't last as long as 'summer' tyres or provide quite the same level of performsnce in some instances. They can also be noisier than 'summer' tyres.

Bit of a problem if you live in a house with no garage, where you going to store the set of tyres/wheels you're not using :lol1:

Can't see it happening personally.

Nik.

My summer wheels are in the dining room. :thumb:

Can't see it happening. This country hasn't got that bad yet.

Anyway, I quite enjoying the feeling of superiority that comes with having winter tyres and lording it over almost everyone else when it snows.

nik52wrx 19 January 2013 07:00 PM

That would go down like a lead balloon in our house :D

the state of this fvcking country, i would not bet against it

john banks 19 January 2013 07:07 PM

Even though I like my winter tyres, my GTR doesn't have them and I will use it many times between October and March in weather that is at least half the time just as suitable for summer tyres as winter tyres. I wouldn't like to be fined for that.

Last March we had approx 24C one week (I painted all my windows in shorts and T-shirt and got sunburn) and then snow (I had to push through foot deep snow drifts) the next.

I`m in the process of buying some alloys and winter tyres for my M3 and they`ll be stored in one of my spare rooms even though I have a garage and shed, especially after spunking £1200 ish!!!

Aye, I think you are probably right there :lol1::lol1: Or bleach into the bogs ;)

Moley 19 January 2013 08:04 PM

The biggest issue in the UK is the lack of common sense the drivers have in poor conditions.

RobsyUK 19 January 2013 08:09 PM

Obviously I wasn't a director at HRG but I did work there for 6yrs.

The reason for my comment was this:

I purchased a Tigra years ago that had 2 very slow punctures on the rear.

I took it to costco and they said that all 4 tyres were winter tyres and as it was summer I couldn't drive the car on the roads as they were unsafe, and that being winter tyres they were usless on dry roads.

Being a tyre place I expected them to be truthful etc. Being young I belived what they were saying.

THIS:
Winter tyres work just fine in dry weather as well as wet and snow, they just don't last as long as 'summer' tyres or provide quite the same level of performsnce in some instances. They can also be noisier than 'summer' tyres.

Is the first thing I have heard about winter tyres except what I've seen on the tv ads....

So your comments about being stupid are deeply hurtful and I expect an apology. :cry:I was just misinformed :D

dealing with hazardous substances requires qualifications and common sense

IIRC bleach isn't allowed to be used in offices due to H&S..

Frosticles 19 January 2013 08:23 PM

I have winter tyres on my BMW 330d M Sport. Over the past couple of days they have been superb. We have had over 6" of snow here & I still managed to trundle around, No problem
My wife on the other hand, has a Mini Cooper & has not been able to even drive up our driveway.
I have had them on 3 of my cars now & swear by them. (It's everyone else on the road I now need to watch...................)
