Wet handling in new STi

Thinking about X Soooby's point about booting it in the wet....
a) presumably, the demo car had only a couple of 100 miles on it? How long does it take to "run in" the 040's? Doesn't it take a good 500 miles to run in SO2/3's? are the 040's the same? If so, perhaps the tyres weren't giving their best yet...
b) if you were to boot the car in the wet as stated, presumably one wheel (presumably the front) will start spinning 1st? The LSD will transfer torque to the other wheel (?) which will then start spinning? You now have both front wheels spining? Centre diff transfers torque rearwards and if enough power is applied, the same thing will happen at the rear? Result, all four wheels spinning and car lunging sideways.....????
This probably wouldn't happen in the old car as the open front diff would just let the 1st wheel that starts spinning to light up and continue whilst the other wheels do their own thing. In simple terms, the STi can take more finesse to drive fast/on the limit in the wet compared to the old car?
Presumably the flip side of this coin is that you can extract more cornering speed from it in the dry?
From a personal point of view, I drove the STi and I like the feel from the front LSD and the fact that the car requires more finess to drive fast....if I wasn't difficult/involving, what fun would it be?

I test drove in the wet and thought it wonderful. Yes, it could catch you out, but it seemed to do what I wanted it to do rather than the more "inert" feeling of my MY00. This was out of the box with standard wheels/tyres and geometry.
Understeer was handled better than the MY00 in my limited experience of caning it around a wet roundabout, building speed on every circuit. Slight lift, **** comes out, then accelerate again and it stays there.
It's a lot more of a driver's car, and is set up that way. I can see a lot going backwards through hedges - I believe Dave made this point upon picking his up...
I'd love one.

Having fitted a decent front LSD to my STI years ago I was expecting a thread like this to turn up when subaru finally started fitting LSDs on the front of a relatively high sales volume model.
Golden rule: Don't run before you can walk!
Take it easy at first and build you competence alongside your confidence. Don't expect it to behave like your previous (open front diff) UK model scooby when driven on the limit, it won't.
Getting the geometry adjusted to a known working setup is also a very good idea.

WHat you should be bagging is your poor driving skills rather than blaming it on the car.
I wonder what you guys would say if you all drove HSV V8 Commodores. You would be spinning everywhere....& blaming the car I suppose.

Agree totally with DaveTS.
Had a MY97, loved it. Had a MY01, hated it. Understatement.
STi7 is absolutely brilliant. Just been away for a week and to get back and drive it was great. This must be the best Scoob I have had because I have had it for 7 weeks and it is only now I want an R34 as well.

Very strange.
In the last 100 miles things have suddenly improved. Maybe my driving style has changed without me being aware but it definitely seems to understeer less than it did 2 weeks ago. The only explanation that I can come up with is the new tyres scrubbing in, but 2000 miles to do this, surely not.

I don't pretend that I am anything other than an amateur when it comes to fast driving but I can tell when a car understeers readily. This STi certainly used to, and much more than either of the two previous ones. Why the situation has rectified itself, I do not know. Anyway, what are your advanced driving credentials?
