Spent a few hours through last week and run the clay bar over the car, its made a massive difference I have to say. For now a quick coat of Auto Finesse top coat but I will be detailing the car when I have chance too.

I'm going to take another look at my struts and springs as the cars just not sitting right, Frayz suggests coilovers with a forgiving road spring or I'm also thinking KYB struts and possibly Eibach springs... Open to input on this subject.

I was hopefull to have the electro plated nuts and bolts back by now but it's taking a little longer than I had expected so another week or so realistically on those yet.

With both bumpers being painted as well I picked up a few more rusty parts today to work on.....

Lets see what I can make of those when I clean them back, there's a few bolts snapped off so I will take them into work for drilling out and re tapping next week and hopefully I will be able to re use them ok.

Also a big thank you to Alyn at A.S. Performance for supplying a nice box full of parts Friday, some nice uprated bushes plus the main crank seal and new "O" rings for the rear diff plus a few other bits an bobs.... Really nice to be able to do business with someone that understands my requirements and is able to assist as well as supply the items that are needed for this project.

I've also got to add a small story about a part that had become my nemesis... That being a "grommet" in particular the bulkhead one that the air con pipes go through, this one item without a doubt has taken more time and effort locating than any other part of the car, mine had a knife cut through it so after talking to a couple of breakers no joy, the main dealer.... Chassis number, import.... We will get back to you... (Cough) finally ordered a new one from Japan on a two month lead time... Nearly 6 weeks go by and it's still a two month lead time... Then I dropped a wanted in here and one member had one with slight damage to it if I needed it... Thanks to super ted. I also completely forgot the fact Stu 53 had a shell on his driveway he broke and scrapped with the grommet in place as it got dragged off... But I then decided to try for a good one a final time and Alyn advised I try HDC Subaru, baring in mind I have owned a Subaru over 10 years I had not even heard of these guys and they had been in business 20 years !

Well what a saga lol anyway spoke with June at HDC Subaru and e mailed a picture, later that day June replied and said Howard knows he has one as he remembers seeing it but he can't find it... Bare with us we will carry on looking was the reply, then the following day still no joy but Howard's not giving up he knows he has one somewhere... Then a day later yes Howard has found it and it's in the post, what fantastic service then yesterday it arrives in a envelope in great condition. Baring in mind now I will add I have never done any business with HDC before and how easy it would be to say sorry don't have one I really cannot say anything other than praise for them to spend all that time looking for an item for a stranger (me) and something only worth peanuts in reality.

So a massive thanks to HDC from me for what seems like such a small thing but as said it was my nemeses and I was not going to be beat by it !

Frayz has "The Bomber" and I have "The Grommet" lol

Anyway just wanted to share a few things this week showing the up's and downs of restoring a car... I've still got a long road in front of me yet !

Oh I've also found a really nice later interior and will be collecting that next week as well.

Simon.
Hi Simon,

Just started reading the whole of this thread last night & had to call it a day at Page 17.

This project is brilliant to say the least & wish you all the best in what is an inspiring restoration.

Just a quick comment I agree with you about HDC Subaru as I rang Howard for some info that he did not need to offer up but was so helpful & it was very much appreciated from the guy so a big thumbs up here!

Hi Simon,

After reading the whole thread I was wondering how much difference made & would you recommend them or some other make/manufacturer?

Thanks Tony, yes I found the same and when you think all I was after was a piece of rubber that's what made their helpfulness even more appreciated as more and more these days you find it's simply money that talks.

I don't have great experience on others but damn these made a difference... I've gone from having yellow candles to crisp white lights, well worth it I feel and not to forget this being virtually a 20 year old car anything to get the lights working better is a huge plus as it's all old technology.

I hope you enjoyed the read it's great to see someone even now take the time out to sit down and read through this project, many thanks there it's appreciated indeed as it takes a lot to write it all out in the first place.

Good good, there must be some oem type springs you could use.....

You should have done 'Car, rust, a thousand parts, sweat, polishing, paint, new parts, put it back together, start up drive off, MOT, enjoy!'

Not sure if MOT is 'technically' a word though

I had to slip "tidy like" in for Chris just to remind him I'm Welsh

Not sure yet with the suspension, if it's coming apart I may decide to put new struts on it as I don't know the history of them.

Here's a few from The Bromley Pageant Of Motoring which I attended yesterday in the car, I covered 331 miles this weekend without problem I'm pleased to add. First big trip the car has had, the only minor glitch was the air con decided not to work... I did have it gassed recently but I need to get the system checked as there must be a leak or something. Not easy on a hot day to open the windows since they are all old school with handles on ! And it was bloody red hot !!

This was taken on the way in, I don't normally bother getting the entry photo but after looking at it I decided this time I would.

I am thinking of dropping some light window tints in and a sun visor like I have had in the past.

Thanks Frayz I was not sure what it would be like on a long motorway run but I have to say it was not bad at all, the gearing is so low you have to change your habits a little.

Looking Good Si and only 40 miles from me. Shame we couldn't catch up.
Why oh Why do we keep missing this event.
I always put it in the club calendar, but for some reason we never go / forget about it.

If you fancy another run out we will be at the Supercar Event Dunsfold on Sunday 22nd http://www.thesupercarevent.com/

That looks like a good day out Scott, I'll jot that down for next year as I know I can't make it this time. Do you guys ever do the Uxbridge Auto Show ? That's another good one and in July.

You should get Bromley booked for next year, this is the third time we have gone and well worth the trip, the MLR were there this year. It would be great to catch up at some point

Ok a couple of little jobs have cropped up recently, even on an extensive rebuilt you can't get away completely so the first job is to fix a slight leak on one of the rear calipers. There's an O ring between the two halves which has I believe been slightly disturbed at some point in the past. So today I've roved the Caliper ready to take down to Godspeed next week to be refurbished where required.

You can see where the fluid is making the paint bubble, this is the lower part on the drivers side.

The other job that I have on the go is the air con, there's a leak on one joint and a slight loss of oil from the system so I'm also sorting the couple of parts I need to get that fixed.

Still no joy with the gauges as yet I did make a few calls but not much contact back so I'll be making a few return calls next week to see if I can find anything out.

Well I have to say a very big thank you to both Ben and Ian at Godspeed today as they saved my Caliper... It was a close call all on the weight of a grommet ! That's the second grommet that's caused me a headache and there's a third one I need to address on the air con next. I'm going to call this car grommet

Right back to it the grommet that connects the oil chambers between halves had been pinched on a past re assembly, just enough to leak but not enough to loose all pressure. Very strangely when you get a refurb kit this grommet is not included as Brembo don't consider people breaking these in half to service, initially Ian said they did not have any then started looking through all the boxes and at one point I thought I'm going to be stumped and then Ben found something that fitted perfectly and did the job, that was lucky !

Here's the culprit !

At the moment I've just had to use the red I have but I'll need to get some touch up I think.

Thanks Jon and yes great to meet you as well, surprised just how much work you have done to your car when having a look over it too

With parking a bit close yesterday I only took the one picture, it does not show my detail work to much though.

And this was one from the garage on Saturday when working on the air con.
