Quite a shock but I think it was just a matter of time
173 STi sold against 25000 BMW 1 series -(and no mirrors on them )
Where did it go wrong ?
Price point 33k should of been 25-26k
They missed a trick woth the salloon with no big rear spoiler as standard or reasonably prices option
Missed a entry level Sti at 20k
Should of pushed the wrxd more at 20k ( great car but 25k was too much )
CO 2 emmissions didn't do much favours with £460 road tax
Fuel economy at 26mpg woth fuel going up so much
Chocolate engines did not go down well
Spend 33k and you don't expect to have to rebuild your engine under 89k miles
Warrentys that did not pay out on the 2.5
So few dealers left
Not enough stock at dealers to view and test drive
Loss of the rally image
Loss of Colin McRae who made people want to own a Subaru and drive it like we should drive them
Image with the chavs devaluing the 4weeks wages scoobies
Chavs giving them a bad image with dump valves
Better more fuel efficient diesel cars that gave 55mpg woth massive torque
Ken block leaving to go to a ford fiesta his influence was good when putting the car through the paces
The exchange rate /Yen made them very expensive compared to european rivals
Loss of gold wheels and big spoilers for older mid aged /crises men
Loss of the great flat four noise
So many things against the impreza
Shame
Guess I will have to keep the classic and either buy one of the last stis and run it into the ground as the BRZ doesn't do it for me
Or import one in the future especially the 2014 new STi

I'm not looking forwards to prices for parts/sensors etc. shooting up. Driving a classic worth maybe £1500 makes it hard to justify certain things now. This might push me personally away from Subaru altogether which I never thought I'd say

Really wounded I have always loved the Impreza it enabled the average man to experience performance otherwise associated with super cars. Hope they carry on selling them in JP!
This will most likely push residuals up for current cars and more so for the special editions.
If I was the head of Subaru UK we'd have dedicated STI centre's with trained technicians such as Rob Ossel. All the STI aftermarket parts available from Japan and special editions such as the RA-R,R205 and S206 NBR etc etc
Basically everything they do in Japan

Subaru and IM must bear the blame for this.
They have milked the UK market for what they could, while other countries got better specced cars for less money.
The spate of warranty claims and the advent of the Rover 25 lookalike hatch, has underscored it.
I think the expression is, "Killed the goose that laid the golden egg...".
Sad day, but some of us predicted it when the hatch was released.

The hatch was where it started to go wrong in the UK! Too expensive, an aesthetic mess, increased competition, no saloon until it was too late, reliability issues!!!
They lost their loyal customer base and couldn't build a new one as the car was just not good enough to stand out from the crowd!

The reason the impreza was so sucessful was it provided people with great performance, great reliability for a very good price.
Since 2006 it has provided great performance, terrible reliability for an expensive price. In this current climate subaru had to come up with a car that could give this: 30mpg, 225g/km, 10k servicing, reliable engine, 300bhp, for £25,000.
They failed

Sad news,
I don’t see many of their 4x4 driving around seems a very odd move,
I have to agree the move out of WRC lost all their credibility! I think they should have looked at fast TDI models that would have really worked in the UK/euro market, look at BMW!

A small strategically placed number of performance STi centres, imagine being able to walk into a UK showroom & ordering a 2L STi with a UK warranty & full dealer support, as well as quality Japanese STi branded accessories! Yes it would cost but you expect to pay for a premium product.

Sounds like you should be Director of Sales, Marketing & Innovation at IM. Vision & willingness to try something different is needed. The Subaru brand has grown in the UK as a result or rallying, anyone who remembers before they entered International rallying, the Subaru (1800) MV was a farmer's favorite.

But would you pay the genuine cost of STi parts??
Many have tried (David Hendry Cars and Powerstation to name two), the UK market is not big enough.
I buy my STi items(clothes and parts) from Japan and Australia (a recognised Sti distributor), but even before shipping and VAT are added, are extremely expensive due to the current exchange rate.
A European wide based STi outlet would probably make sense.

And I thought prices from Japan were expensive until I found this..........

Sad, but not surprising in any way.
Loved my 2 Scoobs, but when it came to #3, no STI Wagon, and the Hatch didn't suit.
Moved over to an Audi S4 Avant. wow. Great size but boring Lightly fettled too, but still boring. But the point being that there were better cars/more suited at the time.
I've got my memories of Scoobs and I still hang out here, but times change. The Impreza/STI just doesn't add up in the UK.
Will be interested to see if they look at a hot Legacy though.......

I have asked the question about a new model return for 2014 but I doubt I'll get the answer I'm looking for

Its a shame for the car, as its a great car.
The day Subaru started treating customers like **** was when it all started to go so wrong. I was subject to this treatment in 2004 and I never returned to the brand. Such a shame, prior to this it was such a good company to do business with.
An STI would be a decent daily hack for me these days, but I have an S3 instead. Dont like it much, but thats another story.

I think you will find that that is one of the reasons to stop bringing the Impreza into the UK.
CrossRoads had a standard 4Gen Impreza (one of only a couple in the country) for sale at £23,000 which is dearer than the equivalent XV.

In 2006 a imported JDM on the road in UK was £500 cheaper than a UK STi
A 2011 JDM Saloon would be over £44,000 OTR compared with a UK at £33,000

I'm gutted by this news, although I did predict it over 2 years ago.
I was lucky enough to own an Impreza Turbo from new - and kept the very same car for over 10 years ..... I never, ever, regretted that purchase - all £22,600 of it in the year 2000!!
It gave me 10 years of performance, 100% reliability, 100% fun and 100% it was a car in demand - the ultimate Cult car of the 90's and into the early 00's.
When it came to the point of change I desperately wanted Subaru to offer me the same mix of power and value ..... I took out a WRX-S and wanted to buy it, but it just looked like the cooking model - at silly high money.
I then took out the STi 330 for probably the most enjoyable 45minutes driving of my life - the Subaru dealer handed me the keys and let me get on with it ........ only when I saw the £33,000 price tag was the smile wiped from my face!
I went and bought a Honda Civic TypeS GT Diesel ...... for less than £18,000. It too delivers smiles - but, on an absolute bargain budget.
And that's it in a nutshell ....... price - value - desireability .... these were all wrong.
I can say that if that WRX-S had the STi Bodywork then I WOULD have bought it in a heartbeat, no question about it. As I said earlier, it just looked like the 1.5 - a marketing disaster for Subaru!
The WRX STi 330 needed to be £25,000 to fight off the competition .... it wasn't - so failed.
I am genuinely, honestly, disappointed that Subaru will no longer be offering a performance vehicle ........ sad, sad, sad day
That said, anyone fancy a 12 month old, 10,000 mile WRX STi 330 for £10,000? That's what they will have fallen to with this news ....... I may even buy one for weekend fun!!
