i used to be a big cold water fan, but it does often re-freeze when driving which is not that great really!.
i would be a start car 5 mins before i leave kinda dude.. but unfortunately i currently have a baffleless generic god of thunder backbox (guys at work here me coming 2 mins before i arrive) and i leave home at 5am...so in order to minimise elderly neighbour hate i have cardboard on screen, walk out, unlock , remove cardboard and leave asap. has worked well so far!

I seriously hate scraping ice of the car. This is the 21st century for F S!
What are we doing using basic tools scrabbling around in the cold like cave men from the ice age?
I have given it some thought & I am tempted to use this combo:

plus one of these...........
Sorted.

My car on tick over is quite quiet but its the low grumble you can't tell whether its enough to wake people. I leave at 6, so tend to leave without ticking over at very very low revs.
The window seems to *steam up easily, to the point I have to lean my head out of the side window to watch where I'm going. Then I sit at the end of the next road at tickover, I don't care if I wake the next street.
*I say steam but the microfibre demister pad doesn't touch it.

Large Jug of luke warm water, the importance is no more than luke warm. Start car with blowers heated screens etc. Pour water over entire screen and immediately wipe. Use remaining water to de-ice side windows, mirrors, headlights etc. Been using this method for a few years. Ready to drive in 1 minute, no more credit card scraping

If your screen is freezing inside it may need a new cabin/pollen filter fitting,
you can buy a heated front screen for the Impreza from a rally company.

The Ford quick clear screen is a wonderful invention, sadly patented by them I believe, which is probably why no one else fits them.
As to leaving the car running, that's fine as long as it's either somewhere it can't be nicked or else it's locked, as your insurance wouldn't pay out if it was accessible and unlocked and someone took it.

you can use hot hot water without any issue, i just boil the kettle then top it with cold water. the bit above max fill line. and jobs a goodun! no need to wipe either, your windscreen wipers are now also softened from the hot water and work a treat

I can't see how hard it is with today's technology, seen as though ford have been doing it since the 90's
Mine is a godsend, I start the car and can drive off within a minute

Very fine wires with a current passed through it. They can be a pain with the low winter sun or when bright sun strikes them.
My WR Ltd Leggy had heater elements for the wiper blades built into the screen. These where enough to clear most of the screen.
On the Classic I am using the Prestone Screen Wash from COSTCO (£5 including VAT). 5 litres in dilution makes 100 litres. My washer bottle as not froze yet.

My Subaru is tucked away in heated garage. Works van is a Renault Kangoo ZE. For those that don't know, it's 100% fully electric. So have a charging point fitted by company, energy supplier. Van has a comfort program. Set it to 9:00am. Heating comes on at 8:00 and defrosts screen and is like a bloody sauna in the cabin when I get in. Happy days. !!

A)
All your water from the kettle just off the boil and slosh it (liberally) over the glass surfaces - works a treat.
B)
1. Switch car on
2. Run car engine for one minute
3. Switch heater to max, and windscreen.
4. Use de-icer / scraper on front and rear side windows
5. Use de-icer / scraper on rear window - clear main central patch
6. Go back to windscreen, use scraper, and watch how easy it comes off
7. Turn fan down to half, redirect between feet and windscreen
8. Turn on rear window heater / de-mister
9. Pull away, as your engine has warmed up sufficiently for you to drive off boost.

My friend had a Mini Cooper D a few years ago with the "ford" heated windscreen.
It really is an awesome feature, my Dads old Mondeo (V reg IIRC) had one and it was brilliant!
I just start car running, run around the car with de-icer and then drive off - not too bad. My missus ran with the towel on windscreen this week and it worked pretty well, so I may do that too tomorrow.
