Frankly, I didn't think the insurance companies knew their *** from their elbow and wouldn't be able to do that with a written off car anyway.
I'll reverse back out now..
You are right if tonights escapade is anything to go by. I took out insurance with Axa who listed no increase for a remap. They dont charge for manufacturers parts either, however when i got my policy it says 'no mods'. Phoned them up and they told me that what they mean is "fitted by the manufacturer and not myself after the initial purchase. Nice of them to clarify that. So thats no insurance -£25 cancellation admin fee, the manager was "definitely going to call me back before 9.00pm" - as you guessed it, no call back and what now looks like no remap either as well. Gutted.

Don't bloody tell them, I know it's wrong but it's only a generic map you're after, and I bet all these diesel mapped cars don't declare it either. Just don't tell us lol

Too late now. I had no idea that saying that was going to be the difference being covered or not. Would they really have been able to find out what was done at the time of purchase or a year later?

If they really wanted to find out , yes they could , but considering the type of car very very doubtful they would bother in the event of a claim

The daft thing is the spoilers and skirt I have on it are so subtle I doubt the insurance companies would have a clue. Everything follows the natural lines of the car beautifully, in fact I didnt realise the roof spoiler wasnt standard when I bought it. I feel as though Im being too honest with insurance companies as 90% of the population would just say it was completely standard and merrily pay considerably lower premiums.

So are remaps detectable or not? If someone crashed into a Bugatti Veyron on the M25 at rush hours for example could they find out if it was remapped if they really wanted to? Not insinuating anything of course, just want to know how much of a mug Im being compared to everyone else.

They probably could but it's very doubtfull they would bother tbh unless it's a race car like Scooby or evo that's looks like its tuned up. Too much resources and money for them to pay out for a specialist to check so very unlikely considering your car.

My usual advice is to keep quiet about something you'd rather somebody else didn't know about!

If its ecutek on there they couldn't do bugger all anyway could they they couldn't read that map if another mapper can't even see it, and worse comes to worse it was on there when you bought the car weren't it and was not advised by previous owner as perhaps he didn't know either

The chance of them checking is virtually zero in the event of an incident
And if I was the op I wouldn't even consider not having it because of insurance
But ecutek or not they could find out if they wanted , ask a mapper ,but they wouldn't even go into it
So op stop worrying and crack on and get it done

I've ended up with Arian Flux, the additional premium is only £75 for the remap so I guess its back on the cards. I couldn't get it added at this stage as they needed specific details regarding the BHP increase. I know, I know I should keep quiet but thats not really me.

In which case, I'd strongly advise fidelity in any relationship you may be having! Never, ever confess is my motto..

Well the major service turned out to be slightly more major than expected. I took it in last Friday afternoon and got the car back last night

Everything came back with no problems at all in the inspections, the service went well until they got to the spark plugs.

I have no idea why but saying that they are not straight forward would be an understatement. Specialist tools needed to be shipped in from MB UK, although at one stage they actually thought that they would have to be shipped over from Germany (albeit next day delivery). Eventually they got it sorted and now the car feels transformed. I can understand why the previous owner gave up getting them fitted when he should have done but I didnt realise how much they were effecting performance.

The car feels so much more responsive, the difference was what I hoped a remap would make it feel like so this along with the large dent that my wallet has taken means that I shall be keeping it standard...for the time being anyway. Apologies to Ant as I have needed to cancel the booking but should I feel the need to squeeze any more out of it at a later date, maybe when its summer and I will be able to take advantage of better traction on the roads he will be the first person I turn to.
