I have to say that I cannot understand the point of having a tattoo anyway. Especially if you get fed up of it later in life.

Without wishing to sound facetious Les if you have to ask you will never know...it will be interesting to see how things pan out in the next few years, now they are just being treated as A N Other fashion accessory by a significant number of youngsters.

 

It is as ever a personal choice like anything else that one might want to do.

If it is of no interest to oneself of course, it is often hard to understand why anyone else might feel that way.

We don't all see much point in screeching around doing 4 wheel drifts etc., but I do-in the right place of course!

Obsessional tattooing is similar to obsessional cleaning; obsessional moving things around; stalking; smoking; drinking; shopping, gambling etc.

Not all tattoo-obsessed people come from poor socio-economic and literacy deprived backgrounds. High-flying David Beckham has had his arms ruined. He admits that he manifests obsessive-compulsive behaviours in other aspects of his life, too. Robbie Williams is stamped with tattoos all over and can't stop. He openly admits to his mental health issues, even if not in connection with his tattoos.

The baseline is that when the pleasure principle beats the intervention of the sensible ego that mediates between the perfection-crazy super-ego and the childish id, conflict occurs; resulting into the conditions like obsession/compulsion and other stuff goverened by the pleasure principle. Defenses like avoidance, projection, reaction formation and so on play their part in obsession. This theory makes a link between 'obsessive' tattooing on one's skin and one's mental health.

Sense of achievement, safety and grounding on building up a tattoo bit by bit in a ritualistic way; having something to talk about among the peers and public attention; need to be different and standing out; exhibiting one's archetypes on own skin and love for art are other things why people go obsessive about tattoos. A tattooist friend says that some really enjoy the hurt they get while getting tattoos. Such customers report that they get a release a well as a life-long beautiful formation on their skin, so why not. There are various reasons for tattoo obsession.
