Gtalk (Android 2.3.4 upwards), Vtok, Tango, Skype. Oddly enough, all of these work on 3G, which is only just now possible for Facetime in iOS6

Cool

Facetime is good, but then it's easy to make something good that is talking to the same OS on broadly similar hardware. That's not a dig at Apple, just a statement of fact.

Skype or similar should the app of choice so you can speak to people no matter what the OS or hardware, IMO.

iOS 6 enables Facetime over 3G, your carrier may block it however.

    • Turn-by-turn navigation
    • FaceTime on 3G
    • Hearing aid support
  • iPhone 3GS, but does not support:
    • VIP list
    • Offline Reading List
    • Shared Photo Stream
    • Siri
    • Maps flyover
    • Turn-by-turn navigation
    • FaceTime on 3G

iPad

I'm guessing it's all to do with processor speeds, compression ability, or just Apple trying to push people to buy new kit? As Geezer pointed out, the best option might be just to use Skype in any case. No restrictions, works on any device from any manufacturer.

I have to say FaceTime is very good, like you say just works

Try using Skype over 3G for a while and you'll see that it's taken some work and good hardware to maintain the standard set by Wifi FaceTime. I doubt Apple care's one bit about carrier revenue, they can block it if they want.

So say you have the iPhone 5 (16:9) and an iPad (4:3), would you buy apps for the iPad and put up with black bars on the iPhone or buy the app for the iPhone 5 and put up with black bars on the iPad? or do you have to buy the same app twice, one for the iPhone and one for the iPad? How will it work? I take it that whilst there are hundreds of thousands of apps for the iPad/iPhone there aren't many at the moment that take advantage of the iPhone's different aspect ratio.

Ordered mine - The One plan with Three. £79 for the phone @ £36 per month. Bought it through topcashback so should be getting £96 back from that

Apps support both. Some of my apps have already been updated for the 5 and I'm running them on the 4s. Apple provide tools to developers, all part of the service.

Some geeky stuff on the A6 SoC:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6292/i...15-custom-core

Will be interesting (for me anyway) to see what exactly is inside it when the phones are released.

As for Android and audio, it's supposed to have been addressed with Jelly Bean. I hope so as audio latency has been my only problem with Android. Hopefully we'll finally see some decent apps in that area.

Just completed a 3 hour drive using the built in turn by turn navigation. Works great on the lock screen, so much better being integrated than a separate app, maps by TomTom and works better than my TomTom. I left with 95% battery now have 58%, had a break at services doing some emails and a bit of Facebook, received a call on the way. Not too shabby for a year old phone.

Yes, that it still works with the latest software and features and it works well. That type of performance wasn't considered possible not very long ago and is still fiction to Android users. I expect the iPhone 5's performance will be even better.

Scrape of the Barrel. Swiping your palm on a screen to take a screenshot is scraping the barrel. Turn by Turn navigation beautifully integrated with your mobile devices operating system is hardly a scrape of the barrel, it's a major feature, especially when the maps have finally been set free from an advertising company eager to get a share of the pie.

If you find a big arrow on an iPhone screen too small then you should see your optician, you're probably not safe to drive. Of course in my Van my iPad fits the dash, but that's another story.
