No,across their modern diesel range. Both pre and post lci.
This is by no means an exact guage, but I believe that if the car has a 'droopy' exhaust, then It's not fitted with a dpf.

The 2004/2005 didn't have dpf - as stated the exhaust pointing down is a none dpf 167bhp engine. I think all the E9x models regardless of year over 2.0 have dpf.

Bit of an update - haven't got one

Anyways, upped the budget a little - probably looking towards £18k max. I was wondering about the gear boxes. I was looking at the manuals really but am not averse to an auto but they seem to do a fair bit worse on the fuel consumption figures - why is this? and do the cars which have flappy paddles consume fuel like the manuals or the autos?

Flappy paddle = auto.

They aren't that much worse, only a few mpg plus they handle a chip better - no clutch to kill!!

Auto is a ZF 6HP box (ZF6HP19? )...be it flappy paddles or not (flappies is just way its controlled - there is no diesel with SMG).

The MPG is down to the torque converter which affects in-town efficiency. It can lock up when on the move which makes it as efficient as a manual, but the mapping prevents it at low speeds...it is technically capeable of locking-up the torque converter in 1st gear (the older ZF5HP could only do it from 3rd gear onwards), but for sakes of smoothness it doesn't. Pity.

Other benefit is no lag from the turbo between gearshift, just keep the right foot planted. But like SMG/DSG/Autos. I quickly get bored of that and need to use my left foot and stir something with my left hand.

autoboxes are in effect, massive hydraulic pumps - which take energy from the engine to operate, even stationary - so naturally puts extra load on the engine especially in town driving

I still haven't got anything either. Went to look at a 57 plate 320i coupe today but the bodywork wasn't tidy enough for my liking.

I was surprised to see that 2.0 engine had an official combined mpg figure over 40 (the only reason I've considered it). Pretty impressive compared to a combined figure on my POS Focus of 30.

Still trying to get that 174bhp diesel engine (57 onwards) with the 58mpg combined. Believe it or not I've even been looking at ugly as f*ck 1 series' with that engine, where it supposedly gets over 60 to the gallon.

I really want an M Sport 320d with under 50k on the clock, but they're like hens teeth with a budget of 11 grand. There was one on autotrader in a private sale in Liverpool that I wanted to go and see. It was an 08 with 37k on the clock, advertised at 10,995 or something, but it was sold.

More of them, please! It looked immaculate too.

I ran a 118d msport for around 3 months great on fuel round town and extra urban but put it on the motorway and it was about the same as a 320d only real bonus was the £30 road tax

BMW are starting to see issues on the 320d engines were the timing chains have failed but at the minute are denying it being a problem

It's mainly on high mileage cars about the 100k mark down to the extended service intervals the tensioners have failed

Just google it and make up your own mind

Cheers, I'll look into that engine problem.

It was actually the 57 plate onwards 120d I was considering. The 118d is an option but I think I would prefer having the power of the 120d there in case I want/need to use it.
