Hmmmmm..... I,m in the same boat so to speak....... I have a 04 MX5 which is a great drive and I fancy a Boxster but the ISB failure puts me off ..... I heard ( probably wrongly) that it isnt so much a matter of if it fails but more a matter of when ...... so I,m now looking at Z4s..... but the dashboard looks mickey mouse to me in a Z4

I nearly went for a Z4. I really like the look of them but they are a BMW so cant be fully relied on either. A S2000 is the most solid but as others say the power delivery is a marmite affair.
What about a 350Z?

People really do get hung up about the engine issues....
For the numbers that are out there then its a small % thats affected..
Same can be said of
No 2 pistons on Scoobs failing..
Pistons and bottom ends on Evo's
Rod bolts and knacked cranks on M3s
Vanos failure and chain breaks on M5's
Shall i go on?
You buy a performance car,you get a highly strung engine.Live with it or buy something dreary and staid..

Yea I,m well hung up on the IMS problem.......... but only from what I,ve read about it .
I,m not a Porsche tech so I can only make my mind up after reading all the cr*p about it on the net........... stuff like this company taking the time and trouble to design and develop a fix wouldnt be worth their while if it was a "few" failing surely ?
http://www.lnengineering.com/ims.html............I suppose the truth is I cant afford to blow one up

Do aftermarket companies not make pistons and headgaskets for scoobs?
Do aftermarket companies not make con rod bolts for M3's and M5's ?
Mr Vanos and Beisan systems makes upgraded Vanos units and seals for all the BMW range..
Could you afford any of the above to go wrong??
Performance cars are not cheap to run, maintain or fix.... If you cant afford it then thats fair enough, there is no shame in that..
When a normally aspirated engine is stressed to run around 100bhp per 1000cc and it needs to last 150k+ miles then there is gonna be problems, especially as the cars get to 8-10yrs old and have gone through various owners, missed services, varying oil specs and varying amounts of mechanical sympathy...

The S2000 runs at around 120bhp per 1000cc and has one of the best track records of any car let alone a performance orientated car that runs at 9000rpm.

That worries me as i love Johnny Vegas.....
He has only been driving a short while though, that would explain everything..
Obviously you dont know,so i will tell you........An S2000 is really a convertible,a Coupe is a closed top car..

Good car.....
Although the 3.0 is better..
There is a lovely Alpina Z4 on pistonheads at the moment for the right money..
Do you want be to scare you with all the things that go wrong with the N series valvetronic units that go in the Z range?.....lol.......

At least we are in agreement...on this thread at least
Seriously though the 3.0 is the one to go for. I test drove one a few years back when I was in my Boxster, S2000 Z4 conundrum and I wouldnt have wanted less than the 3.0

What year is it? That makes a difference on power, economy etc.
On the whole though the main advantage of the 2.5 over the 3.0 is the initial purchase price.
