just had a second glance at the subaru site. get this one.....
red mica, ex-demo, x reg....£22450( all it has on it is a prodrive spoiler) nothing else!!
if u are planning to sell your scoob, dont let these thieves have 'em! sell 'em here, at least u know theyre going to good homes(most of the time )
a uk scoob with prodrive everything except brakes for 21k...thats more like it!

"I sold an MY99 PPP+a/c+17"+PIAA++++ and lost £12k in 16 months. I was told the premium I could expect from ALL the mods was c£1k, and that the Aircon and wheels improved the value more than the PPP A number of Subaru dealers quoted less because it had a PPP "

I just wonder whether this car was sold to a dealer. I would have been seriously interested at the price this must have gone for!.

exactly mark. just coz some slimey dealer offers an insult for your car, doesnt mean u have to let the turds have it! maybe some people buying privately only want a CHEAP scooby, even though it may have nothing extra. But, there ARE people who want a nearly new , in great nick, with pukka prodrive goodies. and with a massive wedge of warranty left, it will save them potloads rather than buying from some lowlife dealer who will make a MASSIVE markup.

Pete

Gary doesnt know that you are on the comedy circuit at the weekends does he??

I have seen people rolling about at your comedy - he does seem to need that implant of humour you talk about

It was sold to a dealer in the end, as he offered within 250ukp of the best private sale price I was offered (15250ukp). Car cost over 27k when new Did need a quick sale, but was on here for over 2 weeks.

Got quotes from 8 dealers, only two where over 14k, 4 were less than 13k, one was 12k several wouldn't even bid

Car was then sold by dealer for 17k

Moral: dealers are only your friend when they are taking money out of your hand Even my up-till-then very friendly supplying dealer turned ****ty, the MD claimed all 27k cars have lost more than 13500 in the same time

Best advice is keep your cars as long as you can, and by them/spend money on them to enjoy, not enhance residual value, because whenever you sell, you get sweet FA for them

from my own point of view, i didnt get the mods done to boost my residual value. i got prodrive stuff coz i thought about warranty issues, and foolishly believed that when i came to sell the car, they would be considered of some value to the new owner. hence i didnt save myself 1500 quid by getting a superchip!
would i do it all again? not a feckin chance!
i will get a motor that has all the goodies already, and not a shoddy substandard interior.if i ever buy another scoob, i'll buy an earlier model for little money, and keep it as a weekend car.
by the way mate, now youve owned your beemer a while, i'd appreciate any pros and cons...seems everyone is getting a 330! are they that good? can the footrest be shifted slightly, the peddles seem offset( silly question i know, but it put me off the m3)
thanks for any advice mate

so...EVERYONE here keeps their car for minimum of 3 years eh? so, if you moved onto a better job or came into some money for example, who here wouldnt be tempted by the NEW m3?? porsche 911 turbo anyone?? no....yeah right! some people buy a house and move fairly shortly afterwards coz they dont like the neighbours. some buy a new shirt, only to never wear it coz it just aint them..etc etc etc.
i doubt there arent many here who has kept every car they owned for 3 years or so( except pete who keeps them all it seems...top man!)
pete, whats your next motor? if u had to have only ONE car, what would it be? i know u prefer to give abuse, but i see youve owned some nice motors, and i wondered what your ideal car is...no, honestly!

No good asking Pete, the next car he gets isnt even on the drawing board yet. He's into a ten year stretch remember - maybe a bit less with good behaviour

330d is fabulous, and despite only 190hp (but almost 300 lb/ft ) is not a world away from a std scoob performance Apart from the very odd dry twisty clear road, I haven't missed the scoob at all! Fabulous build quality, so much more comfortable to do 30k per year, AND my monthly fuel bill has more than halved!! I'm 300ukp a month better off.

Can't comment on the pedals - mines an auto so no problem

Spudgun,

My 330d is a manual, and there is absolutely no problem with the footrest and pedal positioning. I had an STI V5 TypeR V-ltd before. I don't know what the problem was with the M3, but there is no such issue with my 330.

Following on from Garys comments, I can only say that I have not driven a car over any length of time that has made me so happy, both in the performance and economy stakes. Not to mention the build quality etc etc.

The car is truly amazing. Might get it "Van Aaken'd", so that it produces 210 bhp and 375ft lbs of torque! Oooooooh Mama!

Van Aaken does work wonders - speak to Mark Underwood (wizard of wax) he had his audi 2.5tdi done, and raves about it.

For the 330d I was told the superchip is a better option, a bit more power/torque, and harder to detect. I have an article on it from a magazine if you want a copy - email me if so

Almost got mine done, until I spoke to someone who had his 530d done. Said the performance was incredible, mid-range that would frighten a TVR BUT first service after having it done, BMW could detect the download, and wrote to him to notify him of invalidation of his warrenty

Much as I don't plan on using my warrenty, at 30k per year, it is a fair bit of peice of mind. Will wait until it is in its final year and reconsider!

Question

OK here goes for the first time!.
I'm looking at buying a Scooby 5 door turbo and am looking at the following 3 options and would appreciate any thoughts/views;
1. 1999/2000 MY 5 door from a Subaru UK dealer-Generally the cars seem to be advertised at around £16k to £18k and I would envisage being able to get at least £1,000 off (or more??)any asking price in the present climate.
2. 2000 MY-Brand new Y reg but 'old' shape. My local dealer would be prepared to do the price of £19,250 (including air and mica) on either a DBM or Silver car in stock .
3.2001 MY WRX import- Widely available at £16,500 to £18,000, but with a 3 to 5 month wait. So far no UK dealer I've spoken to is prepared to do any kind of deal on a new WRX even if they have one in stock and I am 'cash' buyer.
As far as the whole 'old' v 'new' comparisons I have read the BBS with interest and after a back to back test drive yesterday decided on the following;
'New'-Quieter,Better ride,Interior in a different league,Slower,Better suspension control,fruity WR Sport Exhaust (£350 extra)and ugly front lights/view.
'Old'-Quicker,noisier,less laggy,poorer ride,rattly and F.U.N...
Unfortunately as I'm coming out of a company car the way I buy the car is almost as important as the car itself and the best deal out there at the moment by a mile is the RAC. They quoted me 6.9% APR on any amount over £15k and under £25k available between 24 and 60 months!.
Look forward to the barrage of advice!!.

I have to say, that I find Mr Lewis to be quite amusing! Christ knows why as I drive a pink mica Jap import with Gold wheels.

But.....

A bit of car purchase advice to everyone, if it's not a 20+ year old sports car you are going to lose money on it hand over fist whether you mod it or keep it standard. Car = Consumable, so have fun consuming it!

Peter. (Owner of a cheap WRX and a 1974 Jensen Healey! Oh and not to forget, a 1.4 16v Corsa, so the next time corsa boy pulls up next to you at the lights, smile!)

test drove 330ci manual today(petrol not diesel). what a great car! performance wise, well, what can i say. a bit slower off the mark than the scoob, but once on the move plenty of oomph there. this thing felt planted to the road, handled beautifully. slight body roll into the corners, but i felt well safe in it. when the rain came down harder, the wipers speeded up..what class! this thing was built like nothing ive been in before ( better than both audis ive had before)
i get to drive an auto on thursday, which is what i fancy.
someone said here that a scoob costs around the same as a base 3 series. mmmm...by the time youve done the mods, running costs, fuel etc etc, depreciation...which is REALLY the most expensive car?
as far as trade in goes, the dealer has made an initial bid of 18k. not great, but a nice start, and not as bad as some of the guestimates mentioned here.
it aint definate, but this beemer has sorely tempted me.what a stunning car!

Spudgun,
Saturday just gone, I drove the new M3 for about an hour around the Cambridge lanes and a quick blast down the A11. I thought I was going to come away £500 lighter after putting my name down for one and thinking I need one of these cars, but, I also drove a 330i petrol 4 door manual with Schnitzer suspension. I am still thinking, do I spend £41K on a spec'd M3 and wait 18 months for it or buy a 330Ci spec'd and with Schnitzer suspension and save about £9K and get it in 5 months

As for the footrest in the M3, it's something you get used to. I had the same problem in my E30 M3 and my E36 M3, the clutch pedal is very close to the rest. I just learned to use the left side of my foot

Hi Gareth

I suggest you re-post a new post in the General Section to get a few more responses but here is a personal view.

Whatever you purchase will depreciate. If you want to minimise depreciation then buy the used UK car or alternatively look out for a used UK Spec EU Import which are presently being advertised (year old MY00) in the likes of Autocar for around £14,000. You don't get the extended warranty but you can buy this for £350 - everything else is the same as UK car.

Secondly, relating to depreciation, a new MY01 is likely to depreciate slower than a new MY00.

Thirdly, relating to depreciation, a MY01 EU Import will depreciate at the same rate as a UK car but the initial and final values (for the first three years or so) will remain relative i.e. so you pay less initially and you get less back at point of sale.

If its important for the car to be new (it was for me because I wanted to ensure it hand't been abused) then its a personal choice between the MY00 and MY01 - test drive them both and make a personal choice.

Personally, my desire for a new car and financial constraints mean't that I imported a EU car. I can recommend this route if you are prepared to wait and undertake the (minor) hassle of importing. If this is your scenario then I'd go for the WRX MY01 EU Import and spend a little more on performance improvements.

Phil (MY00 5 Door EU Import)

andrew
i'm the last person to give sound advice on car buying!
my ONLY real weakness in life is a passion for nice motors! i don't take holidays, i have no kids etc etc. i can afford to do as i wish within reason.this aint boasting, i'm just trying to emphasize i'm stupid when it comes to cars. i stay loyal to my bird, but when it comes to cars i chop and change all the time, hence i owned 4 last year, the money i spent couldve paid off some peoples mortgages!!
what do u REALLY want andrew? if u love the m3, bibe the salesmen at your dealership to tip u the wink if someone pulls out of the waiting list, then u jump the queue.
there ARE some demonstrators for sale, i'm positive ive seen one or two advertised at local dealers, i may be wrong. they were yellow ones though.
i drive a 330ci auto in the morning. i still cant stop thinking about the 330ci i drove the other day. silver with 18" wheels..it looked the bollocks!
as everyone will say here, u never really win when it comes to cars.they always depreciate.put your name down for the m3, get a used 330 in the meantime, then hopefully the dealer may look after you trade in wise when your m3 comes through.
personally, i think the m3 looks FANTASTIC!
if they ever bring out an auto i'd be seriously interested!

Spudgun,

BMW are bringing out a sort of auto M3, its the new SMG II gearbox, this system uses paddle shifters behind the steering wheel and is capable of changing gear as quick as 80 milliseconds, there is apparently 5 different settings from sublime to maniac mode, but also a completely automatic mode, which is overridden immediately when you start to use the paddles. This is the option I will go for but it is about £1200 so I'm told..good luck with the coupe..

well, today was a complete flop! the dealer didnt turn up for the test drive, didnt even ring to apologise! so if i can be arsed i will test drive his car "at some point" and if i do decide to get one, i will buy elsewhere.
interestingly, i saw top marques today, and i saw a 330ci for 24.5k! x reg with good spec. now thats depreciation! best offer on my scoob was 18k ( incidentally the dealer who sold it to me offered 16k, someone else offered 13K!!!!!!!!)
so now mate its plan B!
keep scoob, leather retrim is booked for next month, driving light conversion is booked for 2 weeks time and ss backbox is going back on instead of prodrive one.
whats the point of me selling this car? its the only car ive never grown to hate. i will keep it indefinately, and in a few months i will buy old shape 328 coupe auto as a runaround car.
i then have best of both worlds . sure i will never recoup the money ive spent on my scooby, but so what, i aint selling. the beemer will get chopped when i get sick of it, the the scoobs going nowhere! i would rather put it in storage than let some grotty salesman have it for buttons, only to sell on at a massive markup.
looks like the spudgun is gonna be firing off more stupid questions on this bbs for some time to come!
