No I'm talking about dealers and salespeople lying or lying by omission about their cars, not being honest or forthcoming about mechanical problems, doing half-arsed repairs jobs on cars they get in etc and hoping the customer won't notice, dodgy mileage readings, dodgy 'histories'. We know it happens as it is a shady game full of rogues and I don't believe anything that comes out of their mouths the same as estate agents.

That isn't profit it is a form of theft.

My dad traded in his company Rover with a f**ked gearbox and dogy MAP sensor (inside ECU so ECU repair required).


But it was £2K chop against a £27K BMW.

Never heard a thing, but it was a main stealers, so they just dumped it on to whatever trader they dump their part-exes to. Wasn't a "bad" car though...already had best part of £600 spent on the geabox, just it was rebuilt by a muppet who didn't have a clue (CVT auto...lesson learnt, only one company can sort these properly and its VMTP in Cannock).

I don't know what it is with VAGs and timing chains/guides and tensioners. My R32 had them all done under warranty with only 25K miles on the clock (faint rattle under load at low rpms)....rather them than me LOL (engine/gearbox out job)

Happens all the time ,half the time thats why people want a new car cause a car has developed a problem ....cheaper to trade in and get another.all salesman do is start the car up and walk around it .
I for one would have no problem trading a car in at a dealer different story selling private but to a dealer .have a look at evans halshaw most of there cars are sheds anyways
I was interested last year in a rb320 they had did a deal etc asked twice if it was hpi clear answer was yes its faultless but it wasnt it was a cat d.
They tried it with me so i now wouldnt hesitate

Well my contionce got the better of my I did not just trade it in
I have been and had a look round a car and told the trader that my car had the start up rattle he asked his garage to have a look and they say they can get away with just tentioners on it and said they would give me £350 less for the car and I'm glad to say I pick my new car up on Wednesday night with no come backs job done

Congratulations on your honesty.

You have done the right thing and will not have to feel bad about it in later life.

They have been fair to you as well and you have not lost anything like you thought it might have cost you for a repair.

'My' business is in Halesowen if thats what you are implying, Paul. And it doesn't involve messing with CVT gearboxes.

Actually there aren't many gearbox specialists that can fully sort these boxes as there are inherant flaws that require precise machining to fix, rather than simply replacing the broken parts. Learnt that the expensive way; had I known that before, I doubt we would have wasted £600 (minus fitting, as I did that bit) on a so called specialist who didn't even have the equipment to bench/dyno test a gearbox out of the car (live and learn).

There's also ATP whom also have a branch round cannock way (also ECU repairs), but they aren't ZF appointed (VMTP= Vanmatic: http://www.zf.com/eu/content/en/grea...e_cars_uk.html ).

BMW Mini has the newer version of this horrible ZF VT1 gearbox...just go on a mini forum and see what woe these things bring to their owners. Jatcos are far more reliable (as found in Nissans...my mums old Primera CVT is still going with over 100K miles)
