Here comes the snow!

Well unless your car is equipped with snow tyres I wouldnt be taking it out in the snow, dont be fooled that the AWD system is fantastic in the snow, its only as good as the tyres you have fitted, and winter/snow tyres do far better in snow than summer tyres (better braking, grip etc).

My old XR4x4 was a legend in the snow. It'd plough through stuff like it wasn't there and gave me plenty of time to laugh at X5 drivers getting in bother.
The first time I took the WRX out in the snow, I had it in my head that it's 4x4 system would make it as competent as the Sierra (perhaps better, as the sierra 4x4 system is heavily rear bias). I was wrong..... It tried to kill me on several occasions. Even pulling off in 2nd, the slightest bit of spin turned in to the car lurching off in whatever direction it had grip.
The real difference? Sierra was on family saloon style NCT5s with plenty of blocks in the tread and the Impreza came with Toyo T1Rs.
I didn't have the choice of hiding up in the garage as I need to get to work 25 miles away and some of the journey involves uncleared single track B road, so I Picked myself up some 2nd hand 17s from eBay and popped some winter tyres on them with the hope that even the slightest difference would prevent me from landing in a ditch.
Chalk and Cheese. With winter tyres on, you can actually put power down in snow and continue to travel forwards!
This year, I fitted them them on in late November and promptly scrubbed them to death when the weather decided we should all be in T-Shirts! If we get proper snow drifts, I'm going to fetch out my £700 Jeep Cherokee
The Impreza on winter tyres is actually much better than the Jeep in the snow (it does have M+S rated tyres, but that's only a side effect of having large amounts of void, they're not a winter compound) which is probably down to the fact the Jeep is a late and lacking the rear LSD. I just plan to use it because OTHER drivers don't have winter tyres and I know which car I'd prefer them to be sliding in to!

FFS it now says it's 80% rain not snow in Southampton. That will be fun if it freezes.

Just had a run out around Farnham and the back roads, plenty of snow covered roads to play on and the first chance I've had to try out the winter tyres.
The difference is night and day, so much more grip and ABS kicking in only under fairly hard braking pressure. I'd say it probably stops in well under half the distance compared to summer tyres in this weather.
Got a nice big school playground to have a blat around and can only say its a lot less fun now!

Had ticket for seeing The Soldiers at Skegness so looking at the weather took the Scooby instead of the Renault Scenic. Glad I did as no snow on the way there by the time we came to leave about 3 inches. Yes proper snow tyres would have been fun.

I was in my trusty Astra work car and its got so little power it doesnt spin the wheels, just keeps on plodding along even in the snow.
Tried to make my way home but every road out of Kettering was blocked with jack-knifed lorries or accidents so ended up going A14/M1/A46. 55 miles in 2 hours instead of 30 miles normally.
