No but I don't really see your point, there are violent attacks around the world every day, people dieing of hunger, dictatorships murdering and torturing people that all gets ignored while law enforcement launch huge operations to close down a website. I just think there are more important things happeing in the world than a few people downloading photoshop or the latest hollywood film. I understand you don't like being the victim if theft but alot of people lose alot more every day with no recourse to justice. Its a fact of life.

What a ridiculous come back. In that case I will go and steal a Ferrari as obviously there are worse things happening in the world so it must be OK then.

The point is that a lot of people have their hard work stolen every day on the net by a generation of thieving scum that see it as their right to steal things rather than pay for them and truly believe they are doing nothing wrong. It's not just the likes of Adobe and Hollywood who suffer here I can assure you!

The problem is the existing law does not serve the victim too well especially as the websites hosting the stolen content do little to furnish the victim wiith the methods to acquire the information they require to take action.

While SOPA and its ilk might seem like overkill they are only a reaction to the woeful state of affairs that sites like MegaUpload have allowed to become the norm.

I agree that Jack's 99% is probably wrong though... more like 99.9%

I'd love to know the real numbers, hopefully the megaupload case will reveal some juicy data.

There's no way you'd ever get the real figure as it would be totally unpalatable!

By your logic if you steal the ferrari using tools from homebase the response to the crime should be to shut down homebase. There are laws and ways to punish copyright infringment already and it seems very odd to me how much effort and restriction of freedom is going into preventing this, we both know that the US government is trying to stop sites like wiki leaks revealing its various crimes against humanity and THATS what this is all really about. The American government and other evil powers want to stop the likes of us knowing what they are up to.

Did you actually read anything I wrote?

Oh and for your infomation Homebase would offer the police all the help they needed in catching the criminals, your favourite pirate sites do not.

While SOPA may be overkill and a pendulm swung too far the other way this has as much to do with the pirate sites being obstructive as it does your conspiracy theory about the US government wanting control of all of us.

Hell if a site like Scoobynet can have its mods act like ***** over giving out information that should be freely available imagine how obstructive a pirate friendly site can be!

Sorry F1 but I care more about real people with real problems and the internets ability to remain a platform for revolution and resistance to evil governments than I do about someone stealing a film or bit of software from an already wealthy well fed person.

I think the point being made here is akin to why do the powers that be pursue drivers with valid tax discs, insurance etc for the heinous crime of lets say not declaring your vehicle SORN or providing your details when someone crashes into you.

Simple reason, you are far easier to prosecute than the people who are doing a criminal act. So the person who crashed into your car has no insurance so they cant chase them, maybe their details are false but you on the other hand are easy to track down and persecute because you are a sitting target, soft.
You are easier to chase on Road tax when the other dodging *******s get a way scott free.

All that is the same on the illegal downloaders and copyright thieves. The website hosting the content is far easier to prosecute than the anonymous lot

I kinda see Luan Pra Bang's argument. Looking from a hacking point of view, why should Gary McKinnon be extradited for hacking charges? Why doesn't the authorities shutdown hacking sites that tells you how to hack and also provides the tools with which to do it?

from what I read Gary McKinnon did very little "hacking", he didn't really need too

he was pushing at an open door, the computers he accessed had blank passwords for the local admin account and he simply logged on, then using the basic netstat commands went from one wide open machine to the next, all with blank password

not condoning he actions btw

the media companies have been creating hissy fits about emerging technology since the dawn of time

they are acting like the catholic church in the middle ages, preventing the bible from being translated out of Latin and trying to ban the original Web 0.1 which was the printing press

cats out of the bag now and it is not going back in with out being killed -- create a new business model and get on with it

Exactly.

A lot of people in this thread are getting mixed up/mislead with their terminology and by this I mean using words like stealing, theft etc in regards Copyrights as a legal concept.

The third never responded and nor did the server company on which the software was sitting.... short of spending a lot of money to pursue it further in the US I had to leave it there.... that is why SOPA is rearing its head.
They didn't steal your work, they infringed your copyright.
What exactly is this software you always go on about, have you got a link to information regarding it?

What method did you use to protect the software running on other machines?

Finally, can i ask what went through your head, as a UK citizen, to go and try enforce a United States law from the UK? or did you use some other national/international law or duel citizenship that i am not aware of?

Nope, they acquired something for free that they should have paid for. They stole it. You can dress it up however you want to, but it is theft!

With all due respect what business is that of yours? It's long gone now anyway!

It was obfuscated as much as possible, but as with a lot of script in those days it was not completely protected because back then it couldn't be. Anyway as I told you the other day why is the onus on me to protect it, that is just so typical of the modern 'internet generation'.

Er...because I am in the UK and the infringement took place in the US or am I missing something here? Under the UCC/Berne Convention copyright protection is afforded across countries in the conventions, but any enforcement has to be in the country of infringment.

Is "cuñts' list" protected or is that in the public domain? Rather good.

I agree with you f1, the thought of anyone else profitting from my hard work really makes me furious.

I can 100% say that I agree with everything you've posted, I think 99.99% of file sharing / torrent sites should be closed down - I only ever purchase genuine software out of principle, the same goes for video games, music, DVD's and Bluray discs.

It makes me sick reading about parents teaching their children that if they want something they just need Google and a fast internet connection. Boasting about it even.

Anyone who thinks Kimble's Megaupload and any other site like it don't know that they're profiting on this sad state of affairs needs to wake up, perhaps shutting down the internet is what they need, I preferred it when they were all on AOL anyhow.

Yeah I got that from the link, but the comment of mine you quoted was about the 'little people' who suffer from this sort of piracy not the big studios, maybe I wasn't clear, but anyway that's what I meant.

They're dropping like flies now. Fileserve not sharing any more and a long list of others that I'd never heard of.
