Speaking logically then yes but in practice most people need some sort of hobby or interest. Something to be said for living for the moment I think.
I don't drink, don't smoke, don't have that many interests really but I do enjoy cars and so have always had the most fun car I can afford, which is now a scooby (until engine blew up on new years eve!)

Can't understand why people buy these kind of cars if money is tight.
Just seems crazy to me that people are willing to sacrifice other important things in their life for a car.
Yes they are great fun and I wouldn't be without mine but fortunately I do not have money issues so owning a performance car is no problem. If I was not quite so fortunate then there is no chance I'd drive/own a vehicle which breaks my bank.
I also find it rediculous how people take out huge finance deals for a car. I was always brought up with the saying 'you don't have what you can't afford'.
If you can not afford to purchase/own/drive a certain vehicle then don't have it, save up or wait until your financial situation can withstand an expensive car.
I understand why people take out these finance deals and I will admit I was tempted when I was a young lad. The chance to drive a posh car away with a small deposit and a monthly charge is almost impossible to resist. But you need to look ahead and ask if you could afford the payments if you lost your income.

My scooby is my baby and although I dont have mutch money left after paying the household bills any spare money all goes on scooby :-) I still struggle to get everything I would like for her though . I do drive her every day so I can afford her :-) but would like to buy her more shiny bits :-) although I have front and rear disc and pad set comming monday . Unfortunatly running an STI is bit more expense but worth it just for the drive :-) .
Wouldnt we all like to have spare money to just go out and buy stuff but I just have to save up :-)

When i turned 21 i bought an 04 STI, i was only working 16 hours a week in Poundland so left myself broke just trying to petrol, insure and tax the scoob. I then got a full time job 14 miles away from home and the subaru was costing me £80 every two weeks which seemed ridiculous as much as i loved the car. I eneded up sellig it 11 months later and bought a seat ibiza fr tdi. For the amount of time i was sitting in traffic and frightened of turbo'ing because petrol prices were sky rocketing, it made sense to sell it. I can put £55 of diesel into the ibiza and it lasts me about a month. Yeah its a lot more depressing to drive, but means im not living on buttons and i get to my journey in the same amount of time
If i know my job is secure, ill hopefully go for another subaru this year or next, now my financial situation is a bit better. But really need money saved away incase something goes wrong, and not to modify (easier said than done )

Totally agree with this comment (I wanted to put something similar but didn't want to sound harsh! ) The hard truth is yes, they are expensive cars, and people need to learn to live by their means. If you can't afford one then don't have one, wait until you can afford to comfortably run it instead (hence why I don't have a GTR on the drive )

It's just basic common sense really but unfortunately half of the country don't quite get it, hence the countries financial situation.
No way would I leave myself short of money for a car. A Impreza is a luxury which should only be taken on when you are in a comfortable situation.

Technically looking at others incomes and expenditure I shouldn't own and run a Subaru but I do. I make little sacrifices like not drinking much or buying clothes from cheaper shops etc but I've always been like that. I'm probably one of the most frugal people on this forum on my income. There's me, my fiancée and our 10 month old son. As a 3rd year mechanical apprentice my I comings are about £1500-1600 a month. On that we manage to pay a mortgage, feed, cloth ourselves and Isaac, run, tax and insure the Impreza. Some people may say we're mad or 'how do you do it'. As said we're frugal and make money to as far as possible. Don't have much disposable income after the above every month but we get by and I have my Impreza/DJing as my hobbies.
But in answer to the question I can currently afford to run it, if I couldn't I'd sell it, simple as. I only paid £1400 for it last September so if it had to go, it's not as if I have a £10k lump to shift.

I run 2 subarus
Greenwagon used once a week and the rest of the time I spend cleaning and admiring it
Wrxd is my everyday car which gives me 46mpg so is bearable as an everyday car
But they cost a lot to run compared to a normal car but hey it's my hobby and I don't drink or smoke and live quite cheaply and they gave me lots of pleasure

My Impreza was expensive to run for the performance (160bhp) plus I needed a more practical car so sold it. Looked at a 1.5l Mercedes B160 Bluemotion and test drove one for the weekend thinking it would be nice and efficient to run. It only gave me 10mpg more but with 95bhp so that was a definite no. Ended up with the 2.0 Turbo 200bhp model, just couldnt bring myself to drive something that dire for an £15 saving each week. Im averaging 30mpg on mixed driving which is better than the Impreza and only a little worse than the B160.
I value cars on how much enjoyment I get out of it for the price.

Im now in this boat since being out of work for 6 week. £80 is getting me 250mile and i'm doing that a week just for pleasure ffs.
I need a contract fast as i'm stating to think the scoob is too expensive to keep while i'm out of work and may have to go if things don't pick up quick.
Missis was told she gets made redundant too in 2 week. All we need!!

Can't understand why people buy these kind of cars if money is tight.
Just seems crazy to me that people are willing to sacrifice other important things in their life for a car.

sorry mate but thats not how it works! i earn good money have a house 2 kids and drive an impreza no finace just a mortgage not a big 1 at that but that does not mean i can afford to do the 300 miles a week to work and back in it and still stick petrol in for fun. i would love to drive my scoob everywhere everyday but sometimes you just have to leave it on the drive for a week and stick it out in the run about. if only people with NO MONEY ISSUES drove cars like these we would all drive micras

Are you saying people with little money should buy an Impreza ?
I'm not saying I would be happy to drive one everyday even though I could afford too because that's just rediculous. Hence the reason I recently sold our 4.0 Jeep.

my point is that in my experiance money is often tight but does that mean i should not have something like my impreza to enjoy unless i have loads of money. im not saying you should buy 1 if it means not eating but i dout many people can afford to run an impreza or similar car all the time costs of living are just too high now

well i sold my subaru after i fell out with them , iv had about 9 of the buggers and done 4 rebuilds at 3/4 k each
after my p1 let go i got it sorted at a cost of 4k ( with a few mods ;-) )
i thought **** it your going , so i got my self a escort cosworth
had that 3 weeks and some ba£&ard stole it :-( .
so then i had a bright idea and did my bike test and got my self a sports bike ;-) and a civic type r (58 reg)
the type r is bullet proof and the bike is fast :-)
so best of both , the zx6-r costs £70 a year to tax , £300 to insure and does 150 miles to £17
the civic does 35 mpg on a run and about 25mpg round town
dont know what im trying to say here , but you get my gist ;-)

not a problem here. we're what people have nicknamed DINKs (dual income, no kids) plus no mortgage or rent to pay and it's two really good incomes.
regardless i still rarely use mine through the week. a subaru is a toy, not really the best car for commuting so i only drive it when i can drive it properly and still get through 4 tanks for petrol/meth a month.

My car takes up most of my expendable income so yes i can afford to run it, but i can't afford much else if that makes sense.
But i don't mind, i get a lot of pleasure out of the car and whilst it’s not preventing me from paying the mortgage, bills etc and the odd beer with friends it'll stay...even though it does mean I have to make sacrifices in other areas.
