Anybody lighting and smoking a cigarette whilst driving a car could be deemed to be as big a danger to others as a mobile phone user. It should be banned and anybody coming out with juvenile statements such as 'it's my car and I'll smoke if I like' won't be on the road for very long if it becomes law.

the part that stood out the most of what you wrote is
IF IT BECOMES LAW.

Ex smoker here too
Let em smoke - i used to love a *** behind the wheel
It's already against the law to smoke in a company vehicle - how many company vans / cars do you see with someone behind the wheel having a ***???? Fookin loads in my experience. This law would simply not happen.
They should concentrate on the law which says you can't use a mobile behind the wheel - every journey i make i see some **** with their phone glued to their ear.
....and banning smoking in the home

The first week is the hardest
The second week is the hardest too
Come to think of it the third week was no bowl of roses either

But it is worth it in the end. 7 or 8 years now and feel so much better (and a little bit fatter)

Good Luck

As for the smoking ban in cars, they are mad. They can't even enforce the mobile phone ban.....

what next?

as for pubs, what ever happened the the good ol smoking room? if you dont smoke and/or dislike smoke dont go in the room simple!

we will all be banned from filling up with petrol next, (unless you take a course on handling flamable liquids) sneezing in public just in case you give someone a cold FFS

dont smoke with kids in the car
dont use your mobby

CYCLISTS USE THE CYCLE lanes, dont get me started on this one

I don't care if people want to smoke in their cars alone, I don't think people should smoke with children or non smoking passengers though.

i agree with mattyb

end of the day its their car so they should be intitled to smoke in it if they want, i dont think it should be banned

but if there are children involved etc then thats a different matter

ive never smoked a ***, EVER, but if i did then i wouldnt smoke in my car, or in front of kids (not got any yet)

its not the nicest of smells i admit that, but to ban people from msoking in their own car is going a bit ott in my opinion

All of these posters who don't care if others smoke at the wheel would soon change their tune if a car ran into their 'pride and joy' because the driver was fiddling around with a cigarette. What's the difference between using a mobile phone or eating at the wheel which are both banned and smoking at the wheel ?

look mate what a load of crap before i stopped smoking i had smoked in my car the last 11 years of driving without a single incedent.
you are more likley to have a old lady reverse into your car
( which happend to me when i was parked at my wifes work )
but i dont see you having a big debate on whether to ban them from driving.
here is what i am trying to say MIND YOUR OWN BUISNESS their car
is their own space if you dont like that then thats just tough.
look at the votes on this page and its not to ban that is winning.
and even if it was banned its going to be really funny to see the pigs try and enforce it.lol

It's pointless me trying to have a rational argument with a poster who obviously has very little between the ears.

Why not take the Radio / cd player out as well then ?
There is already a law against this, its calleds not being in full control of your vehicle. I dont think we need any new laws.

Sat navs ????
Massive sound systems ????

Oh we can't smoke while driving but it's ok to have a screen stuck onto the windscreen chatting away while your trying to negotiate a busy roundabout in a city you've never driven in...
Or a 2000W 100DB sound system vibrating the car to bits as your driving round at rush hour.

It's fine for these but smoking !!!! Oh that's just dangerous...

Yea, I see your point lads, I'm gonna stop smoking behind the wheel this instance.

On health and safety grounds all vehicles should have removed

any device that requires the driver to make a conscious decision
ie cd/mp3 player or radio tape unit
*** lighter
vanity mirrors
sat navs
air con/ climate control
electric windows
cruise control
trip computers
manual gearbox
heated screens
front bloody fog lights

all controls should be automated
auto lights
auto windscreen wipers
auto parking
auto braking
auto box
abs
traction control

In addition all vehicles should have compulsory gps linked speed limiters, bonus, you won't need a speedo any more

No need for oil pressure/temp gauges either, and as for rev counters and boost gauges, far too distracting

The clock will have to go too

And a device that won't let you start the car if you have been drinking

Thinking about it, the doors should be removed so you can't trap your fingers in them, ditto bonnet and boot.

All glass should be removed so you can't cut yourself if you have an accident

All cars should be electric as petrol is far too dangerous

And the roof should be banned as it takes too long to cut off if the fire brigade need to get you out.

And all cars will have to be high viz yellow with reflective stripes

That's what's coming if the Health and Safety police get there way

Problem is you can't actually argue against any of the above, once a risk assessment has been carried out.

Most modern cars do not come with *** lighters or even ash trays anymore. It's either the floor or the window.
You are right though, it's awful seeing the millions of used *** butts piled high in the verges. You can barely see the grass for tobacco these days........

what gets to me is that when people try to tell other people what to do when
it is not their buisness.
i am a ex smoker and even if i never smoked i would still say leave the smokers alone when driving.
hey i bet in north korea the president Kim Il-sung allows smoking in cars and hes a evil dictator. lol

It's like when they banned smoking in pubs. How many of these non smokers that were so happy when the ban came in actually use the pubs on a regular basis? Not many looking at how many pubs are closing. All it did was turn the regular's away and pushed them towards cheap supermarket booze. Now they sit at home drinking more than they ever did in the pubs because they can have a smoke and drink at home.

Then there were the private clubs. They were forced to impliment a ban against members wishes because people who are not members were quick to agree a total ban on smoking in a so called public place.

I am a non smoker but believe people should be allowed to smoke. If someone is smoking near me or my kids i walk away, i don't tell them to put it out because were supposed to be free people. They are free to smoke and i am free to move away.

If a pub wants to cater for both because they feel there are enough smokers and non smokers wanting to use his establishment then they should take advantage and have 2 bars, one smoking and one non smoking.

Yes you should be allowed to smoke in your car. If you crash because of it then you were not in full control and should be punished. If you flick it out the window you should be punished for littering. We already have these laws.

Dont be too quick to give up your freedoms people. Give an inch take a mile is what it's about. They pick on something that's an easy target, get the people's ok then what next?
Rant over
