Probably quite a bit of nostalgia, but there was certainly more variety than we get now. The lack of idependently owned car manufacturers doesn't help - e.g. VAG sharing chassis and engines.

One of my neighbours had one, I couldn't believe how quick it was

It too got spirited away in the dead of night

He bought a 1.3 Micra with a sprintex blower fitted to it to console himself

Good luck trying to find an Uno Turbo, I have a soft spot for them and looking for somethign fun again but I genuinely believe they have disintegrated no

Renault 5's are something Ive always had in the past but theyre climbing in value for anything half decent.

What about Lancia Deltas, cant believe they havent been mentioned. Alot more monies that what we've been discussing though

Getting an itch for an 80's [style] hot hatch?

Looks like Peugeot might be working on the answer to your prayers:

http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsAr...llCars/259755/

Hope they don't call it the RC though, otherwise everyone will think it's pants!

The new cars just haven't got the magic of the old ones

I think Peugot, despite their brilliance years ago are one of the worst offenders!

Most of it is due to safety now. Once you factor in the cell that is required to protect the occupants and the associated weight of that, it doesn't leave an awful lot of room to design something that can match the lightweight fun and the variety of styling of the hatchbacks of old.

I for one hate the A pillars of modern cars. So thick that you have to move about in your seat to see past them

It was that 100 year old engine that didn't help

Worshipped mine though when first had it

They really were happy days though, all the XR's,GTI's (real ones) etc etc

Hot hatches were fun!!

Anyone remember the Citroen Visa gti? Basically a 205 gti underneath with a dog ugly body.
Also Fiat Strada/Ritmo 105tc & 130 Abarth=really cool
I really liked the Tipo 16v,they made a 3 door in very limited numbers & most has now been eaten by tim worms.
The 80s were a great decade for hot hatches,**** music & clothes tho

Back in the 80's I had a mk1 XR2 for 12 years - cracking little car, not very quick, but the rattly old kent engine was basic and reliable.
along with:
Escort RS1600i - very quick (for it's time) and rare too !, bloody scary under hard braking though !!
and a:
205 Gti 1.9 - miles better than the 1.6 in looks, performance, and handling. reliability though was a bit dubious, build quality was also not very clever !!.

Ian..

I had a Visa gti for a while, good fun and a rare sight even then. Followed it with a 205 which was even better.

306 was one of the best handling cars i drove in it's day, had a go in a 205 1.9 with a technics turbo and it was mental, my personal favourite was the mk2 fiesta xr2 i had 3 of them and i loved them, cheap fast and fun, i would love to own another but not seen one for ages.

Just to throw another one in, the suzuki swift gti they were very quick and light as a feather had a passenger ride in one and it scared the crap out of me, but that was mostly because the lad was driving like a complete loon.

Yep. Same engine (C1J) but slightly shorter ratio box. The best thing was that no-one had a clue what it was.

The first R19 16v's were on H plates, 1991 for the phase 1's, they had a recall over their front suspension struts, phase 2's were nicer looking but us brits got the same interior and everyone else (lhd) got an upgraded facia
