Its funny, I've been thinking the same thing over recent months.

Would be a nice original Fiesta RST* for me I think (black or white with the green stripe ), but also looking fondly at 5 Turbos.

The problem of course is the old Impreza thats currently in the garage space it would need!

* Technically this is early 90s, but its close enough

My Dad actually had a 309 GTI from new in 1987 for 15 years and was one of the main things that sparked my interest in cars. Still remember the day he bought it - I was the smuggest kid at school for a while after.

Just about every mechanical/suspension part must have been changed by the end and I think it was written off twice by his alcoholic partner along the way - bought back and repaired both times

Didn't realise the 309 was a hatch, i always assumed it was the booted version of the 205.

Wifey still has her Phase 1 306 gti6. Great car but starting to need attention. 309 was a good car though.

A few years ago I went on a quest to find a mint Fiesta RST. As when they came out I was slightly too young to A) Afford one, & B) Afford the insurance.

Scoured the ads for months. Never found one that hadn't been Chaved to within an inch of it's life.

Ideally, I'd have had one in Mercury Grey.

Same here. A mate had a lovely J plate black one, but his dad was minted.

You do get the odd nice low mileage standard one popping up, but I think the going rate is getting on for £7k.

The problem with them is of course rust. I had a K plate RS1800 back in '99 and it was rusty as hell then at just 6 years old.

At the same time I was at College, this lad who's dad owned a few Nightclubs had both a Golf GTI, and a Pug 205GTI. Both on private plates. Not bad car's for a 17 year old.

Needless to say, he always had a fit lass sat in the passenger seat.

Still never driven Mk1 or II Golf GTI,i.6 or 1.9 205 gti (That's why I thought 205 when you said brother and I understood the 1.6 was better),or the 306/9 gti

Only 80's jobs I've had a spin in are Renault 5 GT Turbo....which was great,XR2 and 3 an MG Metro Turbo(mine) and an MG Maestro

The Maestro went well IIRC

205 GTI was what I wanted though

Sorry,trip down memory lane

Nick, ive seen a few clio williams but they suffer badly with rust on the rear arches the 309 GTI's dont suffer that badly if looked after, even at 20 years old they can be virtually rust free though some preventitive maintenance would be needed

309's have a nicer feel than most hot hatches and are a little more grown up, hence why I like them better than the 205 GTI's and are not normally ragged as much, (lozgti1, yup the 1.6 was deemed to be the better of the cars as didnt have some of the annoying in traffic features of the 1.9's and a closer ratio box).

Seen a couple though, one being a goodwood, dont know the mileage but a phase 1 would suit me and one thats standard, no dodgy exhausts or flowed heads if possible

I've got a real itch for an E30 BMW 325i but they are £5k for a decent example.

I'm glad my Scoob came up cheap on eBay after my insurance was sorted out, otherwise I'd be trying to get a baby seat in another 205 GTi

Best handling little car EVER imho!!

Definitely no apologies required. The thread title would suggest an opportunity to reminisce and share experiences of the defining era of the hot hatch.

or would you disagree Tony?

Totally agree
These were some of the best hot hatches they made, most had no power steering, those with power steering were not overly assisted the cars themselves may not be serious power (130bhp for the 309 GTI 1.9) and even though they are made out of weetabix boxes, they brought a smile to your face every time you got in them (hence why I want one, though more for shows etc as it would need to get pampered )
Means me eventually going down to 1 scoob but will be cheaper in the long run

You dont need alot of power to have alot of fun

The 309 gti was actually a better handling car but could you class it as little?
