No way was the 1.6 better! I owned and drove both (and multiple examples) years ago and the 1.9 was the better and faster car.

The ultiamte 80's hot hatch was the MK1 Golf GTi

I still desire a nice renault 5 gt turbo, a nice pearl white phase 2 would do me.

Lee247 is or at least was selling an 80's Audi Quattro - the later shape model but still a great car. Do not think she wanted much for it either...

80's french car = money pit with failing electrics

Sorry to ruin the Euro bias but I always loved the Nissan Silvia 1.8 turbo my Dad bought my Mum in two tone blue. All I remember was for the time it shifted well and with the pop up headlights I thought it was bloody superb. Then also had the 2.8i Supra followed by the 3.0i Supra. I absolutely loved those 3 cars as a kid.

Yes, Mk1 Golf GTI. Probably the most fun you could have with your clothes on! The best handling of the 40 cars I've owned, bar none! After 205,000 miles of hard abuse the oil pressure light started flickering. I couldn't bear to part with it. SORN'd it and parked it in a field at my local garage promising to restore one day.

2nd: Toyota MR2 Mk1 (okay, not a hatch but another quick, nippy, great 80s handler)

3rd: MY'99 Classic Impreza Turbo (If only my Newage Bugeye handled like this!)

My first car (2004) - £600 to buy, £1250 to insure. 1.2 R reg Clio.

Same thing now for a 17yr old I know (and same area) - around £3000 to insure.

I really did get in at the right time. Thought it was extortion then, but it's taken off to a new level these last few years!

Never really got the whole 205/309 thing at the time, I was always into Golfs

I've driven a few 205s of the 1.9 & 1.6 varieties since though, and whilst I still wouldn't own one (25yrs later, Mk2 Golfs are still my thing), I have to admit they are an absolute hoot to drive

i came *this* cloase to getting a Polo G40 before i got my impreza. it looked perfect in the pics and speaking to the guy. I had a plane ticket booked to go and see it/buy it but he pulled out at the last moment! he was good enough to send me a cheque covering my plane tickets at least.

Baz82, that Micra is amazing!!

Would have to be a MkII Fiesta XR2 for me. Put a 2.0 16v Zetec in it with some light head work and carbs and it'll be around 180bhp. When i have some free money and time this is what I'm going to do.

To be fair they were definitely hatchbacks, and unquestionably hot

Yes but it wasnt a hot hatch
Hot as in stolen, yes I think it was about 90% were stolen at some point in their lives, good old ford and their new key types but the cosworth came under sports rather than hot hatch (see below)

So the definition of a hot hatch was a small to medium car with a big engine/bhp, in the 80's this equated to 100-150bhp, though nowerdays would you call the wrx hatch a hot hatch? well no, its not yet a seat leon is.

Ah the Uno Turbo.

I desperately wanted one of these about 15 years ago. Mum went mental on me when I spent about £150 on an AA inspection of one that was too far away to just go and view.

Mr AA man's view was that it had "been totally and utterly thrashed". Probably the best £150 I've ever spent

Never did get one and probably even rarer than 309s now.

Also had a shot of a Charade GTti at one point. 3 cylinder, 1.0 litre and brilliant fun when the little turbo kicks in.

This months classic car has a good feature about the best of the 80's cars. Is it just me or were these cars so much better than the modern stuff
