There are no credit checks, thats one of the reasons they can get away with charging 30% interest and i suppose why they have to, due to the amount of non payers

I imagine they do TBH. It is a shame as if they did make that rule then it would stop allot of problems.

These things are not new, there were similar things around when I was growing up in the eighties.

But they are not the reason why the 'poor' stay poor, they are the reason why the stupid poor stay poor.

My parents didn't have much money but they had enough common sense to know that you should only buy what you can really afford. That allowed them to get on a bit in life, a little sacrifice early on pays dividends later on.

If people are stupid enough to pay huge amounts of money to buy things they can't actually afford more fool them. I have little sympathy for them but this is nothing new, it's been going on for at least thirty or fourty years

Yeah it does look like a rip off but there were these points as pluses for the customers.

I did some work for Provident Financial (although it was about 15 years ago).

They used to justify their rates on the basis of high delinquency. The reality is that their delinquency was little higher than Barclays or Lloyds due to a very clever business model.

They had two basic products - a 30week and a 52week product.

So typically 30weeks - £200, pay £10 for 30 weeks = £300; 52 weeks - £300, pay £10 for 52 weeks = £520.

Not quite £2000 but these were the long term loans.

The correct term is the U.P.I., which stands for the Urban Pikey Index. :

It always works that way, having no money forces you into expensive choices like prepayment meters and paying for things like insurance monthly which can add another £50 - £100 to the premium. Also the maxim buy cheap, buy twice applies, the rich buy quality stuff which lasts longer, has left maintenance requirements and retains value where the poor buy cheaper options which don't last the same, a generalisation but you see the point.

Point seen but as stated earlier re. my specific energy situation, it doesn't cost me ANY more on pre-payment meters than quarterly bills

And certain comsumables/appliances which may be thought as as "budget" have outlasted more prestige branded items. Generalise all you want but understand there are exceptions to the rule and expensive doesn't always guarantee you longivity or superior quality.

No disrespect intended

The world is full of greedy and unprincipled people in positions of control of corporations or the money supply.

Until there is a sea change in those peoples' attitudes to one of fairness and consideration for others, the problem will continue.

Can anyone see any signs of a strong and principled leader who might have a go at achieving such a situation?

Les

Talking about being ripped off!

Can anybody explain why this iPad 2 is nearly £800 more expensive than in the Apple store? or am I missing something

https://www.amazon.co.uk/APPLE-iPad-...785679&sr=1-15

Looking through the listings on Amazon there are a lot of them costing more than retail

It's nothing but exploitation of the vulnerable. Everyone wants nice things, but for some, it's just out of reach. These loan sharks, and that's all they are, are preying on that.
They should be regulated, but no one gives a damn. This Country has turned into "rip off at will" and that is a sad situation.
