Under those circumstances they should really do the decent thing and offer to cancel the policy on a pro-rata basis, as they have to stick to TCF rules (treating customer fairly).
I'm not 100% if they 'have' to offer to cancel pro-rata in those situations, but i'd like to think they'd do the decent thing and offer it.

Sorry Moley to jump in on this but I had a similar situation with flux, changed car to the impreza which my insurers (through flux) would not cover and got a quote of £3000 throuh flux from another underwriter.
Sorted cover elsewhere and cancelled my flux policy. Fully paid on about 6 months of the cover - told no refund!
does the tcf policy mean that as the underwriter would not cover it I should get pro rata payment back for the remaining 6 months?
