Default £185 to cancel insurance policy.

I have 2 policies as I had 2 cars [just sold one] so I call the insurance to cancel.
I was then informed that there was a £35 cancellation fee.... yeh ok....and also £150 as the policy had been running for 6 months and I had to pay a percentage of the total amount, even though I pay by DD. The amount being £150.
Looking at the small print, it does state that early cancellation of the policy will result in a % of the total amount being taken aswell. RIP OFF or what.

Now, I am looking for a replacement car but struggling to find one I want so rather than pay the £185 cancelation fee's, I have a plan.
If I were to insure my other car with this policy [therefore not cancelling it or my other cars' policy] then when I recieve the documentation for the new policy, I cancel it under my 14 day rights. Then say to the robbing gets.

Can anyone forsee any problems with this [legal or not, i ain't bothered]

The 14 day cancellation is only valid in the first 14 days of the annual policy being set up,, and can only be done if the policy has been mis-sold.

same thing has just happened to me with SureTerm Direct.
Had the insurance for 3 months then sold the car. It was £400 for the year. I've paid £175 already and they want £105 to cancel.
So thats £280 for 3 months of a policy that cost £400 for a year.

Not to mention they were complete a-holes on the phone when i called to cancel.

well for me they said i had to pay for a minimum of 6 months plus £30 cancellation fee and then £20 arrangement fee, whatever that is? plus interest because i paid monthly on this one.

I've just had something similar with Co-operative. Got a policy running with them on my 406 which has 2 months left. They want it all paying to cancel, so I may as well let it run its course and have the extra years NCB lol. Also whilst running a totally seperate policy with Moley

Saying that though, I just cancelled 5 with Keith micheals and trying to strap me up. lots, 85 on one, 135 on other, and so on. Not quite sure how they work that out, as I have gone for a fleet policy so its completely different to the cover they were giving me.

Because i did you a favour and didn't insist on taking a 20-25% first payment when setting up your policies, hence there is a shortfall.

If i'd insisted on you paying the proper deposit you wouldn't have been short, but i guess i know not do do favours like that again don't i.

The best advice I have been given is;
If Halifax can't insure your replacement car (ie tell them you've bought something like a STI Type 20, or go the whole hog and say you've bought a Lambo) they should have to cancel your policy on a pro-rata basis, and therefore the £135 shouldn't apply.

If they get funny tell them you want the address of the insurance ombusman so you can make an official complaint, and they should back down.


I've not called them yet but I don't hold out much hope.

I remember years ago i upgraded from a 1.2 astra to a 2.0 astra gte and my insurance company at the time couldn't insure it I was about 6 months in because they couldn't insure the new car and swap it over they refunded me back nearly half the policy and didn't take any cancellation fee as its there fauilt they couldn't insure it

only problem is ive missed out on 6 months no claims

I called Halifax today and asked to change the car on the policy to my 1.9DCi Renault scenic which I inure for £300 PA on another policy. Halifax then quoted me £850........compared to the £700 that I was insured with them for a E36 M3 EVO convertible.

What a joke. What to do next ? Not sure telling them I have bought a Lamborghini will wash.

Under those circumstances they should really do the decent thing and offer to cancel the policy on a pro-rata basis, as they have to stick to TCF rules (treating customer fairly).

I'm not 100% if they 'have' to offer to cancel pro-rata in those situations, but i'd like to think they'd do the decent thing and offer it.

I tried that about 10 year ago before i worked in car insurance.
Once the letter arrived on the doorstep from a debt collector i decided it was best to pay it.

Had it with the AA myself as they were far too expensive with my Subaru quote. Had all the threatening letters etc etc.

Threw them all in the bin and never heard a thing since.

Well I called them again today and they won't budge.
The M3 was £700 per year. To change to the Renault Scenic is £850 To cancel is £175 + £35 cancellation fee.
They quoted me for a new 12 month policy which would be £300 but I explained I don't want a new policy as I plan to buy a bike in March when the existing policy is due to end.
I've logged a complaint, mentioned the Insurance Ombudsman and fully intend to take it further.

Whilst on this topic, cancelled my policy with Keith Michaels on 5th Sept as I've sold my Scooby :-(

Chased today (20th) as not heard anything and not-politely told "no way mate" "takes 6-8 weeks before we'll have any refund back"

WTF! FFS! Couple of weeks I could handle, but being £700 down for two months, no way!

6-8 weeks is not correct, so i'd be interested to know who you spoke to.

It normally takes 3-4 weeks, as we have to wait untill the insurers refund us before we send a cheque out.

Rang main number. He said the same "who told you three weeks?" but never get names (or aren't forthcoming). Refunds are done once a month so need to wait for October's?

All seems 19th Century to me, when a few clicks sets it up (and pays for it) in the first place.

It will be worst case senario, if the broker needs to wait for a refund from the insurer before issuing the refund unfortunatly the time frame is out of thier hands, and airing on the side of caution they say 6-8 weeks then when you have it in 4 its better. Under promise over deliver as they say.

Ont he other hand their is no reason why the broker wont recieve the money back from the insurer so why not give it straight away, the broker makes the profit on the policy why shouldnt they stand the money for a few weeks.
