Pretty sure there will be an updated iPhone this year, wether it is an iPhone 4S, or an iPhone 5 remains to be seen. Current thoughts are early october for launch, which does tie in with the release of iOS 5, which is slated for later september / early october (currently at beta 6. I'm guessing there will be, at most, two more beta versions before GM, and it'll be about one to two weeks after that when it ships)

Unless you must have the device now, I'd wait a month or so and see if there is a new iPhone and see if it offers anything new that you might want.

Just hypothesising, but a "new" version of an older model is always a method of improving sales......

"now available with go-faster stripes".... etc etc etc.....

That's not say that iphone 4 sales are dropping (I genuinely don't know), but when rumours of succession are rife, sales DO drop in anticipation for any new model......
This "new" model might help a bit in the meantime.

Not me though - I think it's sh1te

Big Sinky - The Samsung I can vouch for, I wont go into the specs as you will know them all but I can tell you that they really do let the Galaxy S2 make the jump from being a top rate phone on paper to a top rate phone in your hand.

It is super fast, very slim, very light and the display is so beautiful. It works, every part of its design works and works so well it leaves nothing to grumble about.

I see you're a part of the dyno, over cocking crowd. Never measure Apple products by numbers alone. It's all about the experience and nothing can touch the iPhone for user experience, especially not some free software from an advertising company.

Wha? Jack - it seems your arguments for the pro-apple camp have gone the way of the devices themselves which is to say that when you can no longer use the tech as a "we win" argument, all you have left are the brand name and user experience arguments. Thel latter of course is entirely subjective so no real substance there and the first, brand name, is what Apple itself has resorted to in it's latest and in my view desperate TV adverts.

Remember kids - if you don't have an iphone.... well you don't have an iphone.

Oh dear oh dear

I can't quite understand what you're trying to convey Pig, but if you're trying to say that software isn't important then you have no idea what you're talking about.

Of course software is important and of course you know exactly what I am talking about

Don't worry though Jack, secretly I think that Apple is the holy grail of all things tech and am just jealous and bitter because I don't own anything with the Apple on it.

The white iPhone 4 should have been released a few months after the black one, but due to manufacturing problems (light leakage) it did not ship for quite some time. The only difference between the two models is really the colour.

If you look at the timeline, the first iPhone was released in June 2007, The 3G came out in July 2008, the 3GS in June 2009, and the iPhone 4 (GSM) In June 2010 (the CDMA version came out in Feb 2011). As you can see, it's a yearly update (ignoring CDMA), and typically june / july, so the new device is actually late for release going by that schedule. I cannot see Apple holding back on the device for another year, perhaps until the start of 2012, but that would be going against the aforementioned schedule.

Do Samsung replace screens if you break them, if so that's great.

Weather's good I'm off flying my handkerchief, no Apple do not, unless your very, very polite and a little lucky when you visit the shop. No idea how mine has managed to stay undamaged for so long, I drop it all the time.

swaying towards the S2 folks. had a live one in my hands yesterday. have to say it's very slick. full of vodafone and samsung bloatware but i assume that can be removed? the new gingerbread os is nice, the screen is to die for. does anyone know if these phones have been rooted yet? i even went home and loaded the new "oxygen gingerbread os" onto my HTC Desire. I even ordered a 32GB sd card in anticipation.

that might be a problem for me. the samsung is really thin. you could almost feel you could snap the screen in two. it weighs very little (circa 115g). it will be covered under my mega house insurance policy after i pay the excess of £50. ten times cheaper than a new phone i suppose. seriously jack, i know you love your iphone but you should take a look at this phone. seriously quick, loaded with loads of software, that screen, the way it feels in your hand, it all adds up to a nice experience.

I really am trying to talk myself into this phone (an if i can convert you along the way, well, what the hell) LOL

If the phone ran iOS I would probably have one, at £25 why not. But it doesn't and I'm afraid your hardware can have lots of big number and loads of shiny bits, but it's what's inside that counts and Androids just too risky. I won't list the reasons that it's risky, if you're looking into different OS's then you should already be aware.

I prefer the S2 to my iPhone 4. It doesn't freeze, randomly close applications, drop calls and have to use the nightmare that is iTunes. It isn't locked down, I don't have to pay Apple for software and hardware to develop, the screen is a much better size and the keyboard is faster. It doesn't tell me an email has arrived and then won't let me read it because it has only downloaded the header. I can see things like the actual weather forecast without having to open an app lol. And I really hate Apple's smug adverts when I actually find the devices are like toys.

I much prefer Android, and much prefer the S2 device.

yup i'm gonna be getting an S2 in the next couple of weeks. It is clearly the best phone out there.
Techradar review: "We liked nigh-on EVERYTHING on the Samsung Galaxy S2. It's rare we get to evangelise a handset so much – in fact we haven't managed to do so since we opened the box on the HTC Desire and realised a slick experience could live outside the iPhone."

In my opinion the iphone is a shining example of style over substance. It is for people that want to be seen with an apple logo in their hand.

Oh an yes the S2 can be rooted very easily:

It's a shame you think that way Don. The iPhone revolutionised the mobile market and continues to do so. The style and substance you've found in the Samsung is directly related to the innovations of Apple. If you want to know what you'll be using in a couple of years take a good look at the iPhone 5 when it arrives.

Take yourself back to 2007, look at the iPhone, now, take a look in your hand, what do you see? Thats right, you're now using a replica of an Apple product. The same product that was described as a marketing gimmick, a fashion statement. Apple leads and others follow.

I see OTA updates, integration with social networking sites, push notifications and flash videos??? I see three of those Apple are including in the up and coming iOS5.

On a more serious note though, what are people expecting from the new iPhone 4s/5? Apple must have a trick up their sleeve, but I can't imagine what it will be. I very much doubt it will have 3D unless it is a new kind of 3D tech, current parallax barrier type screens I feel are not the way forward.
Multi-core GPU perhaps? NFC, 4G? Maybe they will concentrate on better efficiency for battery longevity?

I'm trying not to speculate too much. I hope its not 3D, the 3DS sends me cross eyed. Better camera, battery life is a given as are bigger numbers to keep the Fandroid Over Cockers unhappy. I keep reading about better voice control, don't like it myself but perhaps they'll make it work. I have a feeling it's going to be a 4S this year as the current model is only bettered by a few higher numbers, quite a feat for an old phone. I might even stick with my 3GS if it runs iOS5 well, can't say I use it that much now I have an iPad.

I very much doubt you'll see Flash on the next iPhone, it's a dead horse in the mobile space.

I'm thinking 1.5Ghz dual core, slightly bigger screen with same pixel density, longer battery life. Not sure on NFC yet. I was also thinking it may just be a 4S as it will probably just be a numbers increase on everything and nothing really new, but then why iOS5? Who knows, only a month or two to wait and we'll see.

Edit: Oh yeah, Galaxy SII gets my vote. Cracking phone, very light and the screen is amazing. Plus Android just keeps getting better and better.

I have a 32gig card in mine and it has 16gig on board storage and most of it is filled with movies games and tunes. If you put a movie on it you will have to put a full avi film on it as anything lower will look dreadfull even on the small screen.
Battery life on the galaxy s2 is much better than my old galaxy s and web pages can load on the phone virtually as quick as my 50mb line and that is just using the phone signal.
