What logic are you using to come to this conclusion? The broadcast goes nationwide, even to the north of France. A lot of people do not pay the BBC because there are better ways of watching TV and thus takes away a tax burden every month on the household.

The principles of business economics are not really working then, would it not be better to reduce main line costs, the million a pound a year salarys etc and the massive waste the BBC allows to happen and reduce the BBC tax to entice more people to the service?

A PVR costs a few hundred quid, if people are that bothered about adverts, just start watching a program 20 minutes after it has started airing and skip them.

There are paid people who work in magistrates courts.

Even if they were all unpaid, it's a waste of time when they could be processing much more important cases.

 

The legal clerk would not have been involved in his case and a 3 minute time slot for £25 is good valve for money. If their were much more impotent cases it wouldn't of been in front of that magistrate.

 

You're a fool if you think £25 covered the cost of that court case.

What about those that receive via SKY?
Another example - people in the South of Ireland do not pay a fee, they quite easily get BBC/ITV via aerial and SKY

They get paid by the government - whether they're processing cases or not!

And I paid before I left the court too, so no follow up paperwork therfore more money saved - result

A slow day for a magistrate is about 4k an hour in fines and costs.

 

....but how much time and effort was taken up processing the case. It started before he got there, and carried on after he left.

 

The blind get a free licence so borrow a Labrador with a harness, a white stick and some dark glasses and crack on you cant see !

As for all those telling you to stick to your guns, my dad did this when the Poll Tax was in force, told me not to pay it and to tell them to stick it, Freedom for Tooting etc.

I get a fine lumped on for non payment and several threats of the baliffs and he then says I should bloody well pay it

So its all very well getting support from some people who log onto a Subaru related website to spout drivel but we aint going to be the ones with the fine.

It is, rightly or wrongly, the law, you can argue until you are blue in the face but they wont back down and you will be punished and that will probably cost you a grand.

 

About 200mhz of processing power and a few presses of a button I would imagine.

It is obvious to me, but court costs are set out to, well cover all costs + a reserved percentage of that case.

I had a visit two years ago for not having a licence. Bloke knocked on the door, Sunday afternoon. Told me who he was etc. so I invited him in, made him a brew then carried on watching TV whilst we finished our dinner.
We had moved 6 doors down the road two weeks earlier. I produced the licence, he looked at it, then said, "but this is No. 30" and the licence says, "27". Yes that's correct, you must have an out of date DB

Anyway, all was well in the world, and he went on to tell us about all the **** and bull stories he gets for why people don't have a licence. He said for first timers, they let you back date and buy one, but get caught again and your day in court will come.

Assume the BBC website is funded from the licence - I use that most days, and listen to our local radio station most days as well, so can't really moan too much about the cost.

But my little contribution of £500 per hour is more than adequate I think.

Its about being able to receive the BBC broadcast not if you actually watch it.

If you can get a product that stops this happening then you wouldn't need to had a liecnce.

TBH for me I am happy to pay the fee since I get to watch DR Who, Torchwood and Eastenders for the missus amongst some of the other fantastic programes they produce (they also fund films too....)

I think it is great that you don't need a liecnce to watch a recorded show on iplayer, but if everyone stopped paying to do it this way then the programs wouldnt be there anyway as they would have no money to make them.

As far as Sky goes well I cannot believe people are happy to pay 40, 50 60, 70 pounds per month to watch a couple of extra channels with allot of adverts, some programs of which have been funded by the BBC or have BBC involvement.

 

To be fair I think the OP has a fair point. I disagree with having to pay for a TV license (but I DO have one ) I heard a few times that the revenue from these goes stright to the BBC but have never officially seen evidence of this. Is that right? If so then how have they managed to get away with this for so long? Surely by law their must be an opt out option but with the chance to still watch the other channels?

 

I regret paying an extra quid for the documentary package with sky; its programmes are woeful. The breadth and depth and production value of the BBC's, on the other hand, is outstanding. I think one can tell a lot about an individual by their attitude toward the BBC.

 

I pay my TV licence and feel it does pay for some of the best programmes in the world, mainly nature stuff although I have been rather annoyed a few times when I want to buy said programme on Blu ray/DVD only to find it is available in the USA 6-8 weeks before I could buy it in the UK! Even after I helped pay for the fe**ing thing in the first place!

An associate of mine really hates the establishment in most forms and when questioned by a licencing officer refused to give him his name, he was told this was illegal so turned on his video camera and asked him to repeat what he had just said but the licencing man just ran off to call the police!
