LOL - point taken.

I meant compared to say the Japanese (well, pre-tsunami) or Germany, or some country where the infrastructure has been REALLY developed....

We actually worked in Germany some years ago on their gas system. Yes, we, the british.

The reason being was they didn't have the technology and were far, far behind us in terms of infrastructure.

The US operate a system close to ours but again is far behind us in terms of both technology and infrastructure.

If you read it all, you would have your answer

Your tone of response so far in this thread is somewhat confrontational... any particular reason?

Loft is going to be done.can't have cavity wall insulation.

We don't really have the central heating on that much, even winter!Though I understand its better to keep it on low than keep turning it on when required

Other than that,I keep giving everyone a rocket about turning the lights off that we don't need on!

Get yourself a monitor to show where and what is using the power , a lot of the power comps give them saway free to their customers.

Trust me when I say it will pay for itself very quickly.

Confrontational! pmsl If it was anything other than a general question then surely it would of been something like this: AND WHY?

I can't understand why you would think I was confrontational, but then each to there own I suppose.

Nevermind you can get on with your thread now lol

You've been reading FAR too much into the thread. A general question. A topic for debate. Nothing more, nothing less.

The problem with the Internets is that text-based communication loses a great amount of sub-text and innuendo...... however your post with the smiley kind of gave the impression you taken exception to something (that either I said, or somebody else said)......
The then quite stern-reading text you typed wasn't exactly giving out "friendly" vibes..... hence the perception of confrontation...

But that's fine - if you've got something to get off your chest, you go for it. However, if it's something more aimed at me, feel free to PM me (to keep this thread on-topic).

Now THAT is interesting. I'm quite humble enough to admit that I had no idea of our involvement in other country's networks. Impressive.

The way that everybody runs down this country's infrastructure (Internet, or road network for example) always leads to the assumption that we aren't as "ahead of the game" as other countries. I'm fully aware though, that British engineers are some of the most sought-after personnel in the world, but budgets/politics sometimes get in the way of the great ideas that they have.

So that does beg the question, how do other countries fund their infrastructure development and expansion? Is it a similar amount as us? More? Less?

Is it a case that with energy prices on the increase, justification of the increase and where it's being spent isn't as publicly-known as it should be?
Still brings back the question (too!) of if all the energy suppliers use the same infrastructure, then surely with all the funds for development/expansion, "we" (the UK) should have an amazing system that in the long run could be cheaper for the consumer? (Pipe-dream, no doubt!)
Or is it that even with the price increases, the additional income still isn't enough to upgrade the infrastructure?

I, like most people, have no issue with increased prices, IF I can see where the increase is going - developing for our future

But there is still the point that if prices keep increasing, there is a critical point where the "iron cow can't be milked any more" (for want of a more suitable simile)

Food for thought...

Dan

I am sorry if you thought that the was at you! But I can assure you it wasn't at anyone on SN but merely a way of expressing my feeling with regards to the energy companies that rip this country off left right and centre

So no need for me to PM you

Dan,

It's not just in Germany where our UK engineering expertise is required. Look at any major gas pipeline project around the world and most of the engineers are UK based as are the welders, fabricators etc etc.

Put it down to a misinterpretation from both of us

I do echo your frustration and annoyance though.

I don't think we're calling into question the technical abilities this country has, as it's one of the few things I feel we've got left to be rightly proud of.

Some transparency as to where our money gets invested into would be a start (which lies firmly at the Companies' feet) - especially when all the public tend to see is dug up roads etc etc etc....

Because of what they charge! I would say there pretty similar to the oil companies and when the prices go down a bit they don't really pass on the difference to their customers.

And then they have a cheek to announce that their profits may have taken a little dip since the previous year and they have only made 10's of millions of ££££'s. ONLY!!

If I am wrong then I appologise. I don't post here to get peoples backs up and I have only posted my opinion on this matter. Remebering that we all have different opinions and some of us are not that clued up as to what goes on in certain areas of this countries economy etc I for one hold my hand up to that

As I said in my earlier post look at the fundamentals. Look at hte profits as a percentage and not just the headline grabbing TV news figures that you are going by.

I can remember going to my Nan's house and having to wrap in about twenty layers because she had no central heating at all. If we dared grumble she would tell us we were too soft and give us a clip round the ear.
If she were alive now and saw how I lived she wouldn't believe it.

I'm not saying we should go back to living in caves but it's staggering how much more we use electricity than just one or two generations ago.
How many people have computers plugged in all day, mobile phones charging up, tumble dryer never out of use, TV in every bedroom plus DVD player and Sky box, games consoles, dishwasher....
My sister-in-law thinks I am mad for pegging stuff out on the washing line but I bet my lecky bill is less than hers.

I agree that it is a moot point that high food prices etc. could well promote rioting.
