Not at all. Your post was patronising and use of the word drivel does you no favours so I shall respond likewise!

These industries ran for years under government control and we are all still here so to say they can't is plainly stupid. The French railway system is one of the best in Europe and runs under state control. You are just stuck in the mindset as is Chip that nationalised industry = inefficient mess.

Chip worked in the gas industry - they have to take a slightly different attitude to repairs and investment. I am sure even you can work out why... hint... gas is quite flammable

Maybe you don't think electricity is an essential, well that's up to you and just a view you are taking to be argumentative frankly! Or put your money where your big mouth is and cancel your electricity supply ... let us know ow you get on... oh yes you won't be able to.... aha

I am not suggesting for a minute the government should give everyone free electricity, but if they ran the services properly and didn't have shareholders to answer to and record profits to attain iit is a fact that electricty could be cheaper. Note the could not would... depends on whethe any feckless politicians coul actually get the industries to run prorperly.

Still all conjecture now as the Tories sold it all off for peanuts to appease the voters and get re-elected again in the 80s. Ho hum!

I could live without gas and electricity as millions have done before and still do, but food, nope, couldn't do without that.

Hell while were at it lets go all the way and re-nationalise the coal mines as well.

Anyway, the biggest disadvantage to nationalisation is that it makes competition impossible.

Competition has many benefits: improved efficiency, more consumer choice, better quality, a desire to innovate and remain responsive to customer's needs. All these come from a business' incentive to hold it's place in a competitive market.

Totally agree mate. What a bunch of d1cks we have in charge. A normal person when things are going well saves up some money to help through the hard times. A sensible government should save during the boom years to reflate the economy in the bad years. What do the kn0bs in charge do (all parties). When things are good they "bribe" us with tax cuts, leaving no money for the tough times.
Now they are f%cked. Economy down the pan, but no money to boost the economy. If they borrow more then the debt rises, if they cut services and jobs, they reduce the spending power in the economy.
(65% of GDP is consumer spending. 20% is public sector spending) Both are being squeezed.

I give up on all of them.

Yes absolutely right. It took NL 13 years to screw our economy by overborrowing in such a way that it eventually became obvious to all.

Comes to something when we have to borrow to repay the interest on what we borrowed!
