Agree Jura 11 when I started playing with mine in 2004 the OE ECU with Ecutek, no OS mapping then, was still in it's infance so I went with GEMS. When I get it rebuilt will be looking at benefits of Ecutek over GEMS as a while back a mate had a TSL 333 setup done and even though mine was 360 bhp he commented that the whole feel was better in the way it drove. I may be greedy and get it mapped on Ecutek for running in and then remapped for capped performance. But then get the GEMS setup for the car and see what difference there is. I think with Ecutek it will be more user friendly where the GEMS being a rally spoec ECU will be kick the door down and let me through. Will have to wait and see.

Anti lag can be nice but if not set right and the temps get too high will result in dead turbo. I am considering next time mine goes for a check up on the GEMS fitting a on/off switch and getting it connected as at times it can be annoying plus if PLOD are around no point drawing attention by giving a cat a few less lives (no harm to tiddles as got my own cat and the wife would make a second wok out of our frying pan if I did).
Still on 04 models EcuTek is still underpowered against the 06 available RaceROM,agree with 360ste GEMS is not good option for road car(i've tried EVO with this and i was not very impressed at the end.my friend later went for Motec).
Just for ALS is no point go for any ECU,mostly people going for ECU is if ECU is limited factor(maxed MAF or dual maps, extra boost control for more than 1.65bar)

I am not saying GEMS is no good, mine runs all the time on GEMS with minimal complaints. If I could leave the car with Steve Simpson at TEG sport for a week to iron out the starting hiccups then it would be excellent. As it is a one turn of the key hit, ie once started could not be tried again for a few hours, I cannot justify the expense for such a minor issue. Once running and cleared it's throat it is EXCELLENT and real fun to drive with great drivability once you learn the traits of GEMS

Ste has already asked the question so the answer will change what could be the recommendation.
If the car is an STI then its going to be a lot cheaper getting to 400bhp than if you have a WRX (well you can get there on a wrx, it just wont last long
), so that would be an uprated fuel pump, 650cc injectors, bigger turbo, change of brake discs/pads if not done already, maybe an exhaust, depends if the original has been changed or not and possably a new clutch to be on the safe side
and atleast a decent air filter.
On a wrx, well your gearbox will cop it, the strain will tell there, a new top mount though your going to need an engine rebuild if you want it to run reliably which will give you the option of going fmic, clutch a must, brakes a must, turbo, injectors, air filter/induction kit... its a lot more expensive on a wrx so its always better off selling up and going for the STI at this stage

I went through 2 gearboxes, and spent a total fortune, i cant even think about what i spent on it cos it would make me suicidal

And after everything i did, it was STILL only a WRX, so resell value was crap....
Trust me mate, ive been there, i sold mine bought a 2002 sti bug, and am over the moon with what i have got. Stronger engine, better handling / Brakes ,and all the Nice bits, interior, bigger rev counter than speedo
all the small bits that make you think - Yep, nice
The second you hit 340 / 350 on a wrx and you can kiss goodbye to your gearbox, yes you could put a 6 speed in, but do the maths, 2500 fitted, brembos 800 (ish) fitted, upgraded suspension ?? lots fitted, sti should be only a couple of grand more than your wrx, no brainer tbh
Ian, learn by my mistakes m8, Sell your car and buy a Sti, a bit drastic m8, but you will thank yourself in the end i promise!!
